I have an inexplicable yearning...
for a typewriter.
I have a feeling that once I get it, I'll know with absolute clarity that I'm not going to need it. And yet, I know I can't get that out of my system until I actually GET one. I don't even like typing on a desk that's too high. It drives me nuts to have a laptop on a desk instead of my lap.
The cheapest ones I can find (that's operative) is $25 on Craigslist (shipping typewriters from eBay is hugely expensive).
Someone talk me out of it, or give me a free typewriter. Either or.
Bad Ideas Bear, you stay out of this topic. You're salmon-encrusted words of anti-wisdom will lead me down a dark path towards a typewriter.

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
You know, just recently they stopped manufacturing typewriters for good at the last place that still made them. It was sad. Typewriters are cool. You should get one. I want one. You could give it to meeee!

Well, I was going to likely get an electric one. Manual ones are neat, but too expensive.

I have an old manual one of indeterminate quality sitting in my garage right now, Kool. Perhaps something can be arranged.

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
I bought an old typewriter at a garagesale for 8 bucks. I was on foot so I told the person I'd be back to pick it up later. I totally forgot to pick it up until a month later and to this day I am forver sad about it. Typewriters are the shit, this was an old one too. The reason I don't invest in one is because the parts and ribbons are too expensive.

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
How would Van get the typewriter either to Rhode Island OR California?
Also, I kinda like K2... gotta see if that is used by someone else.

Shipping of some sort, I imagine. That being my second choice, of course. When I can I prefer to deliver all of my packages via a fellowship of a wizard, an elf, a dwarf, two men and a handful of hobbits.

I think perhaps you may have uncovered the reason that Canada post is so slow.

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
I wouldn't have you do it for what I'm sure if a flight of fancy. In fact, for all I know, my aunt still has one that I used to mess with (unless she chucked it when she moved).
Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
Because I also think typewriters are kind of neat, this was the only April Fool's day joke I feel for this year.
I am not proficient enough at typing to use a real typewriter for serious work, though.

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
To satisfy anyone's curiosity:
It's an old manual typewriter complete with it's own briefcase-like carrying case. It's in great condition, minus the case being a bit dusty. Out of curiosity I tried typing something with it and, predictably, the current ribbon is pretty much dried out. Still, it works.
I was hanging onto this baby to maybe use it as a prop in a photoshoot if the opportunity ever presented itself, but if someone else thinks they can get more use out of it...

Now I want it, just to bring to a CS class to take notes on.

We have a typewriter with sticky keys and no ink (we used it all up, what little there was) sitting in the school props cupboard. If you'd fly to England, I'm sure I could get it for you, we hire props in these days anyhow.

Completely off topic, but when I read the thread title, I extend it to;
"I have an inexplicable yearning, an inexplicable yearning to travel at great velocity!"

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
I fairly sure arranging that would be quicker, but possibly more expensive. Then again, it could be rather cheap.

This might be one of the best ideas ever. It'd also turn out pretty inconvenient, but it would be hilarious.

Re: I have an inexplicable yearning...
Oh man, I've always wanted a typewriter. I want a manual one; they're wonderful and make the best noises, and plus, you can use them even if the power is out.
I'd kill for one of those snazzy little electric blue deals they made in the 60's, when the mechanical ones got really small and portable and they started making them in awesome colors. Like one of these, or one of these, or one of these, or one of these....
I think it's possible to re-ink some of the ribbons, so it's totally not a crazy insane idea!
