Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
So, I wanted to start playing final fantasy and I heard that there are a few games that were really just a gigantic waste of time. (Final fantasy 13) so I figured I'd avoid the bad ones, only problem is I don't know what the bad ones are. So I decided to ask the Internets opinion on where I should start.

Personally, 7 is iconic, but not THE BEST. If you're looking for decent stuff, start with 4, maybe 6. 9 wasn't bad for the PSX.

Generally speaking, the only really bad one is 13. You can't just go by Spoony's opinions, because plenty of people like 8 and 10.
The BEST one is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the Gameboy Advance. Go get it. NOW!

That is, if you like tactics games.
Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
They're all pretty decent. Except 13. And X-2.

My personal favorite was 3/6. Might not be your cup of tea if you don't like SNES graphics, but the good news is that you can check it out on an emulator for free!
PS - This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

having played this one, all of FF1 and part of FF2, i agree that TA is the best. But then this is like asking a penguin for expert advice on flight.

I loved FF6 and i also loved FFX-2 - after the depression of FFX it was a nice change of pace. plus it had the happy ending FFX should have had

Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
I liked X-2 as well. It's one of my favourite games, let alone one of my favourite Final Fantasy games. VI and IX are good too. The good thing about the FF games is that they're all stand alone stories, with no connection to each other. My problem with XII was it was set in the same world as Vagrant Story and I felt I should have played that to fully understand it.
Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
Personally I think VI is my absolute favourite and, controversial or no, VIII comes a close second. IX is good, but I haven't played it enough times to hold it in the high regard others do. V is an enjoyable experience, and the first two are worth playing to see where it all came from, once you've played a few of the later games.
Dissidia is also a really enjoyable game, playing through it myself at the moment, but I definitely think you need to have played most of the main series to get the most out of it, and be a reasonable hand at action/fighting games.

I've played 7 through 10 and would rank them thusly:
10
7
8
9
It's all very subjective and each game feels quite different. I'd say you can't go wrong with 7, 8 or 10 as long as you like JRPGs, but other people will inevitably disagree.

Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
FF games are actually all kind of so-so.
Of the one's I've played, 7, 8, 10, X-2, and 13 were the most enjoyable. With X-2 having the best gameplay of any FF ever... Even if the story is just laughably terrible. But it doesn't really take itself all that seriously. 10 is probably a requirement for playing it though.
13's big problem is the first 5 hours of it. It feels like a rushed game. The story is all over the place. It's unfortunate because there is an amazing game in there, some where.
8 has an absolutely absurd plot twist and very easily broken (in the player's favor) battle system. Still it has some of the best music (Blue Fields) and is still a very playable game.
7 would be the best if the story wasn't ruined by the sequels and retcons.
The first 3 aren't really worth your time.
4 is probably the best of the snes generation.
9's only saving grace is Vivi.
FF Tactics is garbage. Go play Vandal Hearts 2 for a good tactical game.
There are much better jRPG series you could get into. However, FF does have a certain style and feel that is unique to the series. Honestly, your best starting place is probably 10 or the remake of 4 for the DS.

Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
Just avoid 12 like the plague. i think i can see what they were trying to do with it - make it work more like MMO combat with enemies on the field and more real time battle systems but no i didn't like it at all. turn based is for me the whole point of final fantasy no matter how it gets dressed up and rebranded (active time battles/conditional turn-based etc).

Anyone who tells you 9 isn't on or near the top of their list is just afraid of how aroused they were by Kuja.
But seriously, it's a great game.

Matt would undoubtedly say Final Fantasy VIII as the best FF game ever. I think VII.

the number of people who hate 8 is larger than the people who like it.
but pretty much its 6(in the u.s. is was called 3 when it first came out) is the best of the 2d ones.
7 is the most well known iconic milked for every thing its worth and then some
a lot of 9's charm is all the tiny references to the older generations(nes/snes) of JRPGS
10 with the big complaint being the voice acting for the leads.
11 is a mmo so yeah
12 is very very hit or miss with a mmo style combat system iots one of thoes love it or hate it games
13 is well runnning down corridors with fights every so often
14 is another mmo

Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
you forgot x- 2
i enjoyed all of them (at least the ones i've played) with the exceptions of 10 and 12 - 10 for the rather defeatist storyline and 12 for reasons i've already mentioned. haven't played 13 or the online ones so i can't say anything about them.

I prefer 10 over 9, personally. 9 was, to me, more of what the original Final Fantasy should have been like.
I really need to get my playthrough of 7 done so I can re-download 9.

Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
Recently downloaded 6 from PSN and, about 15 hours in, can safely say its my favourite (not the "best" as that term is too subjective for games in general). The graphics take a little bit of getting used to but the characters are awesome (a couple are a bit meaningless but then again there are 14 in total!!).
You know what LoadingReadyRun forums? I liked Final Fantasy XIII and here's why:
- 4 out of the 6 main characters are really good (Fang, Vanille, Lightning and Sazh) which is more than 8 or 12 can say (although to 12s credit Balthier, Fran and Basch were AMAZING). I did like the way they developed Hope but they made him a little too whiny when he should have been more emo and don't get me started on Snow.
- The graphics and music are properly incredible, although no ones attests to that.
- The battle system was easily my favourite in the entire series. Playing around with different paradigms everytime you switched characters was one of the most engaging parts of it. Anyone who complains by saying it did all the work for you don't really have an argument as you can select your own commands which makes for a more difficult but ultimately more enjoyable playthrough.
- The linearity suited the story, just a little FYI, this is in no way defending the overall lacklustre storyline. They are being hunted down by pretty much everyone ever, they seriously would not have the time/means/opportunity to go shopping in a nearby town or chat to NPCs. Like i said, not defending the story, just saying it made sense with the story they chose to run with.
It is not my favourite (although I do rank it above 4 and 12) and it certainly had its negative points:
- The crystarium (character progression system) was far too linear resulting in character's having very similar abilities.
- The writing was bad, although its never been "good" in Final Fantasy.
- Vanille's voice did start to grate on me although she is a very interesting character so i completely forgave her for it.
- The story was not very good, although the mythology they created was interesting and would have been much more engaging if they hadn't just written it all down in a menu somewhere.
- The weapon upgrade... thing that they had was just terrible. Too complex and ultimately tedious, frustrating and unsatisfying.
- Snow is an absolute tool.
So before the torrential vitriol starts, I'd like to say that anyone who hasn't played it and won't due to criticism should give it and go and make their own opinions (which in itself is a good philosophy on all games and life in general).

Re: Best Final fantasy game? (advise)
This is a dangerous question because 'bad' is a relative term, doubly so with the pensioners' heroin that is nostalgia. For example, you get people like me telling you that II, V, VIII and X-2 are a great introduction to the series despite that sentiment going against the grain somewhat.
What if, to play the devil's advocate, you were to play VI and VII because the consensus was that they're the best, and hated them? What about if, down the line, opinions soften on XIII and people start recommending it?
