The pre-release I went to was fun times. Opened a Sun Titan, Quicksilver Amulet, Rune-Scarred Demon and and Flameblast Dragon.

Actually managed to quicksilver out the Demon on turn 5 and tutor for the Sun Titan to put out turn 6. That was a good game.

Also got a Primordial Hydra but no other worthwhile green cards to play it with.

Interesting, I seem to have pulled a card that's worth some money - Gideon Jura from Rise of the Eldrazi. looks like he's worth average of $20-30. doesn't seem that bad.

It's cause he, like sorin, has been re-printed in m12.
Though as far as planeswalkers go, i think everyone has learnt their lesson at wizzards after the jace incident and made them about as common as other mythics (between my group we opened a total of 14 boxes of WW to-date and have seen 2 mind sculptors.)

I recently got my hands (briefly) on a Jace Beleren promo card from the Agents of Artifice book release, presently worth around $130. It took about three weeks for me to get it after buying it. It arrived from overseas in a big envelope with about three different layers of protection wrapped in bubble wrap.

Then I stuffed it into an envelope and mailed it to a friend half the country away.

So I'm toying with an RG artifact destruction deck...

Basically, turn their crap into artifacts with Liquimetal Coating and destroy it with Manic Vandals, Oxidda Scrapmelters, Glissa's Scorns, etc., and drawing cards with Viridian Revel while you do it. When it works, it works well, but it doesn't seem to do well against any kind of aggro unless you get a really lucky draw. I've got Ancient Stirrings in their to find the Liquimetal, but the problem with that card is that if you already have a Liquimetal or do out, and aren't lacking for lands, then it's a dead draw.

I thought about splashing blue for Ponder and the like, but doesn't seem worth it when I don't own any Scalding Tarns or Misty Rainforests.

The deck as it stands:

9x Mountain
9x Forest
4x Terramorphic Expanse
1x Rootbound Crag (the only dual land in RG that I have)

4x Liquimetal Coating
4x Viridian Revel
4x Ancient Stirrings
2x Naturalize
2x Slice in Twain
4x Glissa's Scorn
2x Crush
1x Magnetic Mine
1x Noxious Revival

4x Manic Vandal
4x Oxidda Scrapmelter
4x Viridian Corruptor
1x Steel Hellkite

Steel Hellkite is in there doing the job that Hoardsmelter Dragon could probably do better if I had any.

Any thoughts?

Liquimetal Coating is useful, but for a more persistent solution to forcing artifacts on your opponent, there are few better cards than Mycosynth Lattice. Judging by your card selection though you're going for Standard-legal, where it's much less simple.

To combat that problem, I think you're better off looking for ways to make lots of Liquimetal Coating clones, such as with Mirrorworks and especially with Prototype Portal.

You could also toss in Tuktuk Scrapper and if you can find a way to give your Coatings protection from green, Creeping Corrosion.

I think the problem is really more getting Viridian Revels out quickly. When this deck works perfectly, then you get LC and a Viridian Revel or two out right away, and then all the artifact hate in the rest of the deck keeps you drawing at a good pace. But if you empty your hand before getting a Revel out, you're kind of stuck.

Tuktuk scrapper looks like a good replacement for the Corruptors though.

I went 3-1 at my prerelease, losing only to a deck running Flameblast Dragon (damn that thing)... The deck I ran:

Creatures (14):
Vampire Outcasts
Gravedigger
Royal Assassin
Bloodrage Vampire
Child of Night
Arbalest Elite
Griffin Sentinel
Assault Griffin
Peregrine Griffin
Benalish Veteran
Gideon's Lawkeeper
Gideon's Avenger
Serra Angel
Rusted Sentinel

Spells (8):
Pacifism
Spirit Mantle
Sorin's Thirst
Wring Flesh
Doom Blade
Fireball
Manalith
Swiftfoot Boots

Planeswalkers (1):
Sorin Markov

Land (17):
1 Mountain
1 Dragonskull Summit
8 Plains
7 Swamp

Notable On-Color Sideboard:
Celestial Purge (frequently brought in)
Stave Off (brought it in against a guy with Angelic Destiny and never drew it)
Mind Rot
Deathmark (another card frequently brought in)
Dark Favor
Distress
Incinerate

Spirit Mantle won me a game against a G/U/r deck, as it let me free a not-bloodthirsty Bloodrage Vampire from an Arachnus Web and made it unblockable. Arbalest Elite was surprisingly potent. Never was able to cast Sorin... every game I drew him, I either didn't draw enough lands or I didn't draw the right lands (which is odd, given the even split between black and white producers). And Wring Flesh may look like removal, but I could only ever get it to work as a combat trick.
Didn't walk away with any packs (prizes were only for the top 3, though he said he had a "surprise" for everyone in the top 4... I assume it was the old foil Nissa leftover from the first DotP promo?). But i had a good time and got some good cards, at least.

Went to a small release event, and me and my friends won all the prizes only losing to each other. The three of us claimed victory from the backs of a titan each. Also Phantasmal Dragon is really good with Lord of the Unreal, one of the biggest beatings I've dished out in limited ever.

I'm getting back into magic and looking to play either RDW or WU control. RDW seems pretty straight forward (Fast Goblins + Direct Damage spells), WU control is a little more shaky. Let me know what you think.

4x Mana Leak
4x Stoic Rebuttal
4x Arrest
4x Oblivion Ring
4x Day of Judgement
4x Stonehorn Dignitary
4x Blade Splicer
4x Venser the Sojourner
The last group is either 4x Preordain, Divination, or Cancel

lands
4x Celestial Colonnade
4x Glacial Fortress
7x Island
9x Plains

Lots of lockdown, lots of denial, some slowdown with the Stonehorn. Mostly trying to get Venser online with Blade Splicer or Stonehorn Dignitary until he can ultimate. Venser and Colonnades let me maintain a presence during days of judgement.

Once my Green deck gets blown up in October I think I'm going to be going with a Big Red deck (tentatively titled "Kiss A Little Longer" lolol). Here's What I've got so far:

4x Phyrexia's Core
20x Mountain

4x Inferno Titan
4x Furyborn Hellkite
4x Chandra, the Firebrand

4x Shock
4x Incinerate
4x Arc Train
4x Chandra's Outrage
4x Red Sun's Zenith
4x Mycosynth Wellspring

I think I'm probably gonna drop 2 land and 2 RSZ in favor of something, but I have no idea what yet lol.
PS - This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.

RDW stands for Red Deck Wins, an example (from Shards/Zendikar era):

Don't use phyrexias core. You want everflowing chalices and/or sphere of the suns. Koth is better than chandra. Doubly so in this deck. Beware of manabarbs.

I also pulled a Jace. Mine is real though, not like that trolly mockup Matt has.

Plus, I pulled enough decent rares and mythics to convince myself that buying a whole box wasn't horribly fiscally irresponsible.

Right, so watching so much LRR recently has made me want to get into magic *fistshake*

So I bought 4 boosters just to see what I got, pulled some nice stuff, batterskull for instance, which made me want to put together something a little better. Especially considering that one card was worth more than the price I paid for the boosters...

So should I buy a commander/EDH deck, or buy a deckbuilders toolkit, like 125 commons and 4 boosters, plus a fair bit of basic land?

I'm thinking deckbuilders would be better, but I really want me a mimeoplasm (sp?) so I'm torn.

Commander is fun... Like, really fun, and the devour for power deck is by far the best of them.
But only get it if you have friends who play it all the time.
I got mine on the release here and the store was sold out of all but 1 pollitical puppets deck. HAvn't seen anyone play a game of commander since that day.

Deckbuilders toolkit is great. Personally i'm waiting for them to update it for m12 and then get one myself, after my ragequit of magic at the start of the year i am rather limited on my commons/uncommons.

if you are thinking about a deckbulder kit a m12 updated one should release in a couple of weeks

it really depends one what you want to play and who you want to play with really, if you just want to play casualy with a bunch of mates its up to you see what they play more of really. if you are interested in playing events at your local card store you are better of with a tool box, the commander decks arnt legal in type 2 which is what most stores play.
