Empath was involved in a motor vehicle accident some years ago, where he was driving while sleepy. His girlfriend at the time was killed in the crash.

Yeah, at the time, I wanted to be thrown in prison. It took the court to make me realize that, although my inattentiveness contributed to things, it was ultimately a freak accident (car dealer had replaced my chipped windshield with a defective one lacking that 'security glass' plastic laminate and allowed debris from the crash to plunge right through and strike her...and it took a doctor to get me to realize that that little one-pound plastic struck her chest in exactly the wrong spot - see Xyphoid process - hers got broken off by the debris and cut open her aorta...nothing short of having a full cardiac surgery theatre set up right there on the median would've saved her. ) In the end, my license was suspended for a year, although it took me longer than that to get the courage up to get behind the wheel again.

Inasmuch as it's a little weird to have it arise from such a horrible event, it reminds us that there ARE some good people left in this world (and some aren't even 'traditional couples' )
