Embarrassing Board Game Collection
I knew I had a big board game collection but I didn't exactly know how big until this week when I moved to a new apartment and had them all in one place for the first time.
And so... here is the embarrassing board game collection:

My board game collection is embarassing because I don't own any. And now I want to play Betrayal on Haunted Hill.

It can't be that embarrassing when you clearly have Small World.

You should build a fort out of them.

All you need is Monopoly. It combines all elements a board game needs:
1) Luck
2) Abusing people
3) Verbally abusing people
4) Manipulating people
5) And general combat.

Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
MY boardgame collection is actually my roommates.
Now, it's not as bad as that, but when you realize that my other roommate is the games director at the Math Society, and therefore can walk out with one of, like, 400 board games at any time, it becomes a little silly.

There is no Monopoly in my collection. There will never be Monopoly in my collection. I despise Monopoly.

I don't have that many, but I have a few. I really like the Flying Frog games. They've got a new pulp-era game out that I saw at Dragonmeet, but didn't have the £70 to lay down on it.

Fortune and Glory. Fun game though it's 'competitive' version is a bit busted. It's meant to be played co-op.
I own Last Night on Earth but never played it.

Monopoly is a flawed game at best. That said, there are some interesting gameplay elements in there. What hurts it most is the feedback effect that makes it harder and harder to come from behind.

Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
I've played approximately a million games of Monopoly since starting my job. I wish there was a bit more variety, but that's how we roll, I guess.
Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
I own the terribleness that is Civilization: The Boardgame. I'm not sure there's anything more embarrassing than that.

Which one? There's the Eagle Games one from 2002 and the Fantasy Flight version from 2010. I've been curious about the FF version especially since apparently the latest expansion fixes a lot of things.
If you're looking for a good Civ game try "Through The Ages: A Story of Civilization". It was originally supposed to be a licenced Civ card game but the licence droped before the product was shipped. It's by my favorite desginer Vlada Chvatil and is well worth the look.

Why not? I always enjoy playing Monopoly. It reminds people what huge C***s the human race are. =)

You need a Board game to do that? Man all I have to do is watch the News or if I'm really desperate, go outside for five minutes.

I actually play HoN or DOTA2 for that. Monopoly was pre-broadband.
Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
I unfortunately own the Eagle Games version. It's really not well thought out. Anyone that participates in a war necessarily loses the game, because they haven't been building their tech tree. That was the first game we played.aeric90 wrote:Which one? There's the Eagle Games one from 2002 and the Fantasy Flight version from 2010. A few months later when we go it out again, no one started a war and then it basically became a poor resource-management game.
We gave it one last try where we all went to war and the game basically became a poor combat game.
Ultimately, they tried to mash together a resource management and combat game and ended up failing on both accounts. It's a poor boardgame. The only game I've played that was worse was the Dr. Who CCG. Now that was a clustf*ck.

Monopoly may well be a rubbish board game, but Monopoly Deal the card game is the awesomesacue. Seriously, games can last anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on number and skill of players and prerequisite luck. Good fun pretty fast-paced and very variable game.

Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
FWIW, I still think Monopoly's trading angle is a really interesting one. It uses trading and auctions to good effect.
The problem is that it relies way too heavily on random elements, takes too damn long to play, and has this nasty feedback loop that is hard to break. (That is, if you begin winning, you gain an advantage.)
It has a little of the same appeal as Munchkin in that you play the people at the table more than the board.
I don't hate/ Monopoly, but it's a flawed game and sure doesn't deserve the stratospheric success it's had.

I actually played a good game of Monopoly last night. We put in some house rules to make it go faster and it was over before we got to bored. So that was fun.

Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
I don't hate Monopoly, but I definitely don't understand the intense love. Last night, I played Monopoly with someone who would (and did) hunt through the wizbin to find a stray piece that had been thrown out. That is a level of dedication to a mediocre game that I just don't get.
Re: Embarrassing Board Game Collection
I would do that for my Monopoly but that is cause mine is a special version.
