LHC Reports Discovery of its First New Particle

Postby Elomin Sha » 22 Dec 2011, 06:37

Chi_b (3P) is a more excited state of Chi particles already seen in previous collision experiments. It is made of something called beauty quarks and anti-quarks.

At this rate, maybe LHC will find Higgs-Boson in a year or two.

The paper is 17 pages long; 13 of these is the author list. It is not surprising that I know a few of the 'authors'.

If the LHC did not find more excited states I would be really worried.

It's about time they find something except the fact that it won't create black holes. I can't believe all that hype a few years ago how it was going to destroy the world.

That was just because people are stupid. And 2 years from beginning operations to confirmation of a new particle is not long at all. With the scale of the thing, it took a while just to confirm everything was working and calibrated properly, before they could increase power to high enough levels to begin to detect new particles. Plus, it can only run for part of the year anyways, due to power requirements.

Wow... even science is that shallow. I'm sure the original name of the latter was "nice personality quirks"

Far cheaper than looking for WMDS in Iraq. The LHC also had a net gain of 100% in comparison.

Europeans call the two heaviest quarks truth and beauty. Americans call them top and bottom which is confusing because the two lightest quarks (the ones protons and neutrons are made of) are called up and down. The two intermediate mass quarks are called strange and charm. I think strange is the most appropriate name for a sub atomic particle.

O~h. Silly eurofags. Now that you mention it, I guess I remember learning that some years ago, but clearly didn't think it was important enough to remember.

It's kind of like that other one I can't remember, that has different names on different coasts of the US.

Anyway, the best particle is clearly still the positron.

Am I the only one that read that something called Chi_b was made of something called beauty quarks and immediately imagined some kind of weird LHC anime?

Hidamari Sketch is fabulous, and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Also, question for Chrusher - why is it the scientific community can find the time to build complex machines for studying the utmost cutting edge of scientific research, but they can't find the time to give quarks reasonable names?

beauty quarks are also called "bottom" quarks so that's funny too.

You seem to forget that scientists are nerds.

And nerds like to give things weird names.

Computer scientists are fond of giving things funny names that have funny initialisms. Biologists give new species names with funny in-jokes. Astronomers give astronomical objects mythical or historical names (though I think this is convention). Physicists needed pairs of names for quarks that signified opposites, and I guess "truth" and "beauty" were good for a laugh. Plus, then you can call your quark-emitting apparatuses "beauty factories," and give them strange names like "Belle." "Oh, we're powering up Belle to emit more beauty."

The closest most Computer Scientists will get to sex is using C++.

It gives them an STD.

But their are so many languages that are more sexy than C++ and do not make you feel dirty afterwards.

You have to admit, for the usual numbing jargon that often accompanies technical terms insiders use among themselves, truth and beauty are surprisingly poetic.

Drawing purely from human history, how about the old science stand-bys?

1) Name That Describes Appearance - such as when the name of a species of fish translates from the Latin as "pointy at both ends", or when the bright lights seen in the far northern skies in winter time end up being called Aurora Borealis, which means "Northern Dawn".

2) Name That Describes Behavior or Nature - such as alternating current, pulsar, event horizon, and Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

3) Name In Honor of Historical Figure - typically the discoverer, conceptualizer, or inspiration for the investigation of the entity or phenomenon in question, such as Einstienium, Thorium, the Higgs Boson, and the Streisand Effect.

4) Name Derived From Nonce or Nonsense - often coined because no adequate term of description can be conceived of, such as quark.

5) Abritrary Name for Sake of Ordering - such as Gliese 581 c, X-Rays, Type B Diabetes, Vitamin C, Red Dye No. 5, or the ninth thoracic vertebra.

It just seems to me like "beauty" quarks is just a little too far off the abstract end of the scale of available options. It doesn't describe the quarks or their nature in any meaningful way - in fact it does the opposite, it muddles one's superficial understanding of the phenomenon. If the name is meant to simply be an arbitrary designator, something like "Type X Quarks" would have done the job a lot more cleanly, or even random nonsense like "Boxalic" quarks would be better. And if the intention was to serve as a form of honorific, I think the choice of a vague concept such as beauty for honoring is a tad absurd.

Yeah, but particle physicists clearly spend too much time standing in the sychrotron x-rays.

They named the Strong force carrier the 'gluon'. Because it keeps quarks together so tightly. As if they were glued together. Glued. By gluons.

Honestly?

Let's look at the subatomic particles, shall we?

Electron: Tiny negatively charged particle that spins around an atom. Called such because it gives us electricity.

Positron: The opposite of an electron, tiny POSITIVELY charged particle.

Obvious link there.

Proton: Large particle. Conventionally taught as the opposite to Electron. Positively charged. Fucking heavy.

Assuming I knew what an electron was, but not the other two, the name sure doesn't help when explaining.

Neutron: Large particle. Like a proton, but neutral.

FINALLY SOME LINK!

At least with "truth and beauty" being a phrase that is popular in Jungian thing, calling these two random, but linked things "truth" and "beauty" respectively allows us to know they are linked.
I can put my hands in my head, and I can laugh it in the face.
