Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Ding 6!
I'm starting to get bored of doing the same thing every day, so I'm going to look for something new to try.

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
You could try some different plyometrics, pull-ups, dips, etc. Or some weights. Maybe some cardio?

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
The challenge is equipment. Right now I am doing all of my exercising at home. I do have gym passes though, so I might have to break down and use them. I'm also seriously considering signing up for a swing dancing class.

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Look around online. There's a lot of stuff you can do without equipment, just make sure you do it safely.

metcarfre wrote:So to say 5 minutes 3 times a week of exercise is sufficient is... laughable.
It's not about being enough to improve your fitness, it's about what lots of studies (the 15mins elevated heart rate a day thing has been UK gov advice for years and years now) have shown to be enough to dramatically cut the risk of heart disease in later life.
He's only saying that this 5 minutes of spin as the same effect as the 15mins gentle exercise would.

Ran 10k again this morning. Surprisingly harder the 2nd time. Those last 5 minutes are tough!

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
I need to find new ways to work my triceps with free weights. Any suggestions?

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
There are plenty of suggestions on Fitocracy but my favorties are Skullcrushers and Seated Triceps Press. Also remember that most bench press exercises and low rowing motions are compound exercsies that work the triceps too. Personally I hate Kick-backs which are probably the most common exercise I see for them using free-weights.

I joined. Good thing this doesn't record your workouts. Embarrassing.

I didn't realise that the Michael Mosley article I'd skimmed was actually related to an upcoming Horizon programme (BBCs scientific documentary series), here's some snippets:

the second link is specifically about the 3 mins of spin a week thing

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
I haven't had time to even sign in to fitocracy in the last month, but I have good news... well, good in the health and wellness perspective anyway. I'm being laid off as of March 1st and will have much more time to cook healthy and exercise! As long as it's free of charge... Also - the chest cold has subsided enough to allow me to do this, as well!
Unfortunately I have a month left to hit my #30 by 30 goal... so I don't think that's gonna happen.

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Any mental motivation tips?
The last 5k that I ran, I almost gave up halfway through.. adjusted speed down a bit (to 7mph) and finished it off fine. But while I usually try to avoid looking at the treadmill timers, I kept glancing and thinking "oh god, it's only been a minute?"... for the last 5 minutes or so of the run, I ended up forcing myself to just stare at the seconds ticking upwards and tried to zone out. It worked, but I'm not sure I can count on that working every time

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Do you listen to music? Try it. Say to yourself, "OK, to the end of the next song" and so on.
One reason running outside can be nice; you can say things like, "OK, to that next telephone pole/end of the block/ top of the hill/ etc."

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Lying to yourself is the best way I've found when doing endurance stuff. "Okay. 5 more minutes and I'll reduce the speed." Over and over even though I never do it.
Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Back on the horse. Did a HARDCORE 11.5 K hill workout last night. Legs are tight today. Will log this when I get home from work.
Bought an new bathroom scale today. Dreading what it says (because I'm pretty sure I've slid backwards on weightloss).

Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
How about a new challenge of who runs the most? Treadmill or on the ground. Not walking but jogging, running, sprinting, etc. Also, matts not allowed to participate (I joke I joke).
The LRRun Runners Running Challenge... <_< Shut up.

One thing I learnt when I was getting in shape for the police; there comes a point when you find you're putting on weight. This is simply because muscle weighs more than fat, so when you build the muscle, it's mass is less, but the weight is more. It's nothing to worry about if you gain a little, because you'll burn the fat off eventually.
Re: Fitocracy: LoadingReadyRunners
Appreciate the input, but no, in this case It's because I've plateaued in fat loss and slid back a bit. I'm up 5 pounds from my lowest point, so I have some ground to re-cover.
