Re: The Sex Thread
Huh. Just came across this: http://techcitement.com/culture/the-bes ... s-for-men/ -- basically, a reversible, easy, and cheap birth control method for men that involves a simple surgical procedure and lasts for up to 10 years. It sounds pretty awesome, though it seems like it's only in clinical trials currently at least as of last year; wonder if it'll just get buried because there doesn't seem to be much way for anyone to make money off it?

Re: The Sex Thread
Interesting. A linked article claims it's in Phase III trials in India; whether this gets translated to the US, Canada, or the EU. is another matter.

Re: The Sex Thread
If you're interested in male birth control, suspensories are a cheap DIY way you can stop any time and get all your fertility back. Main problem, maintenance, and it takes 3 months before it starts being reliable (so that your existing supply is depleted). That last point is true of most male methods though, including the male pill for instance, and even vasectomies I think.
http://malecontraceptives.org/ has a list of methods, both DIY and medical ones that are on trial. Sadly none of this is new, it's all been known for years if not decades, but I constantly run into people who have never heard of male birth control other than condoms. That's pretty sad, especially when you go to female forums and see the huge proportion of females exchanging tips to get a baby behind their guy's back (usually because their husband doesn't want a kid and they do, and they figure this way the man can either stay and raise the kid or will be forced to pay for child support anyways. Sometimes for even stupider reasons such as wanting to keep a guy because the relationship is about to end.)
I've been saying it for years, you guys need to take charge of your own birth control, because once pregnancy happens, you have basically no say and no control, unlike women, and I think everyone should be able to make their own decisions on whether and when they want children.

Elomin Sha's Unwanted Birth Control Tips:
1) keep it in your pants
2) both parties keep legs together
3) don't do it
4) fire
5) if in mid-cloitus think of John Prescott
6) cast Rebuke for two and a white on dominant party member

Re: The Sex Thread
Reminder for everyone: if you don't want kids, here are the options, in order:
- don't have sex
- have sex, but not reproductive sex (same sex sex, anal/oral/manual sex, phone/cyber sex, etc)
- have reproductive sex (penis in vagina) but use contraception (physical, chemical, both)
- after unprotected sex, use emergency birth control (prevents a pregnancy, but only if you're not pregnant yet, meaning the earlier you take it, the better)
- if pregnant, have an abortion
- if abortion isn't an option, give up the kid for adoption.
The last three are never up to the father. Ever. The first one is often considered not an option provided you're not asexual, and the first two are not up to you if you get raped.
That's why it was normal when I grew up for females to get on birth control when they had their first period. Some of my friends didn't have sex for 4 or 5 years after that. But if they got raped, they wouldn't have had to deal with a pregnancy on top of that.
Anyway, if you're a male who is sexually attracted to females and you don't want children, your options are not having sex, not having reproductive sex, and using male birth control (suspensories and vasectomy are really your main options. Condoms too, I guess, but I never see them as birth control since they aren't that effective. Use them for safer sex more than for birth control).
Of course, if your goal is safer sex, use condoms (or gloves, dental dams, etc) for non-reproductive sex as well. I know, preaching to the choir, everybody here is probably educated on that already, but it just seems so stupid when kids have anal sex to avoid pregnancy and don't use condoms.

Condoms aren't really that effective...?
You might want to reconsider that statement before you go teaching sex education on the forum.

Re: The Sex Thread
Not rape protection, rape-borne pregnancy protection. It's one thing for the mother to have to carry to term the child of her rapist, and still another to inform the child that they were the result of a heinous act upon their mother. It's just sort of best for everyone usually if pregnancy is avoided in that scenario, and since it's a spontaneous event (at least from the victim's viewpoint, normally) it pays to be prepared.

I think what she's referring to is the fact that people who use condoms in the typical way (i.e. often incorrectly or inconsistantly) still have a 10-15% chance of an unintended pregnancy. Even with perfect use, that rate only drops to 2%.
So if you're having a fair amount of intercourse, there is still a not-insignificant risk of getting pregnant.

Re: The Sex Thread
If you're having a fair amount of intercourse, probably best to use more than one form of contraception either way. No method alone, save abstinence, is 100% safe
