The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
After watching today's draft and seeing the Mormir game, I tried it out. In the second game, I managed to pull what has to be the funniest way to lose at magic.

It took a good minute or two to click through each individual action on the stack since I had 50 lands left in the deck.

tanatoes wrote:So as I mentioned in the "who blames LRR" thread my wife and I decided to start playing Magic again after a fifteen year period of not playing primarily because of Friday Nights. We bought many boosters at PAX, built a couple of rudimentary decks and then started watching Graham and James drafting on MTGO. This Friday we went to our local FNM and entered the draft (we both went zero for four with the crappy decks we drafted, but it was a good learning experience.) Now I'm pondering joining MTGO so I can practice drafting and build some virtual decks to test out in a low-stress online environment before going back to get my ass handed to me by people at the store. What do you all think? Worth it to sign up online or should I just learn by getting repeatedly beaten in live competition? Would any Runners want to play online with me?
I am probably going to do the same thing, after going to FNM and seeing how packed it was and how fast they play with alt language cards. I am reasonably familiar with M12, Innistrad, and DA, because of the drafts but they play something else. Rumor has it there is a small but strong LRR MTGO clan/guild/organization.

I foresee this being a big commander soon. To quote the WOTC guy on the dais, "there are going to be a lot of angels, and not just white..."
It sounds like its going to be a angel heavy deck with a good number of humans.

With the new mtg block Avacyn Restored slated to be released how giddy is Matt what with being the resident Angel junkie?

Watch the Twitch TV, Loading Ready Run First video for April 15th James talks about this very thing.
I really enjoy these drafts.

I like watching drafts too, it allows me to live vicariously through LRR, even though our drafting tendencies are completely opposite...

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
I'm having so much fun building decks! So far I have built two complete standard decks which I will test out at FNM this week: a black/blue deck I call "Zomgies" and a black/red deck I call "Sorin's Spawn."
I've also built a 99 card singleton blue/white deck I call "Last Stand of Avacyn's Faithful" that needs a good commander to be a commander deck. I'm thinking Geist of Saint Traft, but can't really see myself spending $25 just to complete a deck of dubious quality. Besides, my local store only seems to hold Commander games on Thursdays, and that doesn't fit too well with my schedule.

If I open another geist I will send it to you. I have popped two of them in like 8 packs.

I could get behind having a couple of Black Lotuses, if you could pull those from a DKA pack somehow...

Isn't it theoretically possible to pull them from a time spiral pack? Cause my store has a box of TS.

Quick question regarding funding of MTG habit. Is it more economical/better value to buy a fat pack or just to buy 9 boosters? Is there any difference in the way the fat pack is organised?

Ha! If it were available in TS there would be no TS boosters left. A single Black Lotus is worth $1300-1600
Geoff: I don't know what the Fat Pack pricing is like near you, but over here it ends up being you get 9 boosters for the price of eight, plus some gravy. I think for AVR its a poster, a set booklet, a life counter and 2 deck boxes. Personally I like it, I'm always short of deck boxes and the big box it comes in is super handy. Oh, and you get 70 basic land cards.

Time Spiral had a dedicated set of cards that were re-printed on the "Time Shifted" card sheets. It wasn't a random distribution.
Wizards are not allowed to reprint Black Lotus, or a whole bunch of other cards on the "Reserved List". They promised they wouldn't. Black Lotus of course is far too powerful to ever see a new print run anyway.
The first print run of Zendikar did contain some "hidden treasures", things like dual lands and a few other very rare things, but these were actual old cards slipped in to the boosters, not re-prints. But I don't know if a Black Lotus was in any of them.
Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
Has anybody listened to the ep 1 of Constructed Resources yet? I'm like 20 mins in and it seems promising.
Hackett out.
Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
Is it possible to set up some sort of trading thing, or giving away thing. I have way to many cards I don't want and lack a place to dumb them.

...That seems like a good idea in theory. If we were just keeping it local, if we wanna go worldwide I have a feeling it would instantly get cheaper for people to buy them than pay postage unless it's something like "I'll trade your 4 elesh's for my 4 charmbreakers!.. Of course I'll pay postage!"

Unfortunately I don't have 1 of either of those, but I do have 2 snapcasters and 2 angelic destinies. If anyone wants to trade for 3 Mikaeus, the Lunarch.

Re: Magic: The Gathering: Whatcha mean, there's no thread ye
I just took a look at the Canada Post website. If cards were just sent in a standard envelope weighing under 30 grams (according to some searching, a card is about 1.81 grams) it would only cost $2.02 Canadian to go to Australia. So small international trades would probably be quite doable, although obviously if you're like Guidance and want to just get rid of a bunch of cards longer range shipping probably isn't viable.

Dual Launch looks interesting for me, cheap and reusable Reverberate.
