AC is worth it easily. Pick if up if you can. Better then AA in pretty much every way.

I thought AA had a more compelling story. AC more like obstacles being thrown in your way for no reason whatsoever. Really Mr Freeze? Really?

Yea, but AC had more going on with Hugo and all the motivations, backstory, side-stories, and so forth that were going on around the town. I do agree that there was a LOT of BS obsticles put in your way for no better reason then padding things out though.

Also, check out Chime for those who might be interested. It's cheap right now ($1.75 in the US) and is a pretty good game.

AA had the greatest easter egg ever. It was so well hidden that the developers had to tell people it was there months after release. That alone makes it worth the price

I thought that it is a steam-powered game, like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, hence why I didn't mention it. But $4 is still a steal. I'd like to get Stacking while it's on sale since I already have CQ and Psychonauts, but I'm low on money at the moment. Oh well.

It is a common misconception in gaming circles that somehow having a publisher is mutually exclusive with "being indie." While this is probably true in the Music and Film industry, the fact is that the content platforms for games differ dramatically from those mediums. One of the largest platforms, the 360, is pretty much closed to any developer who doesn't sign with a publisher.

The problem is that if a developer wants to release a game on XBLA-proper they need to cut a deal with a major publisher. There is simply no other way on to XBLA. (XBLAIG doesn't count, as it is restricted to XNA games, and is pretty much a digital ghetto.)

Some developers choose to "self-publish" by "renting" a slot from a major publisher. However, in this case they're still giving a large chunk of change to MS and the publisher. Furthermore, the developer will have to foot the rather hefty bill for certification.

Most indie developers don't really have a lot of cash lying around by the time development is winding up, so they opt into a publishing agreement because well, if the publisher is going to be taking a cut anyways you might as well let the handle the fees and marketing. It is just easier.

This is why EA has "indie" titles, and why games such as Bastion (published by WB) are still "indie." If the developer independently funded the games development, and retains the rights to their IP then they are for the sake of argument, independent.

Just finished playing through Dear Esther and.. I don't even know how to describe it. There isn't really a word for it.

There are no puzzles. There are no enemies. There are no moral choices or strategies or anything. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it simply becomes hard to categorize. I don't think it fits in with most definitions of video games, or perhaps games in general.

You could argue it is interactive fiction. It is certainly an interactive piece, but unlike the mainstays of that medium the audience doesn't actually have any real involvement in the outcome of the fiction.

At its core it is an immersive narrative experience. It gives an experience that is more similar to reading a book than really anything else on Steam.

However, if you're the sort of person who legitimately enjoys long walks on the beach instead of just putting it in a personals advertisement for the sake of seeming romantic then Dear Esther is probably going to treat you well, even if you can't get into the story. It is the best use of the Source Engine I have ever seen. Hell, occasionally it will even make Unreal and Cry Engine look a bit dated.

For a "game" that has no enemies, no puzzles and no interaction in any way, it is extremely creepy.
