AlexanderDitto wrote:Yeah, as someone who lived there for a long time, Florida is not northern at ALL, outside the major population centers (Orlando and Miami). It's backwards-looking rednecks and racist, hateful old people that make up most of the state. Miami's huge urban/Hispanic population WOULD make it a liberal hotbed, but most of the people there are Cuban, and Cubans HATE the Democratic party because of President Kennedy. They're also all Catholic, which makes them socially conservative.
Gay rights are not going to be protected in the south for a long time. At least not until staunch, socially conservative wingjob christianity dies there. Which is going to take a while. A lot of people are going to have to grow old and die.
Luckily, seeing as Florida is where most old people go, it has a head start.

Well the line has been drawn in the sand then it seems. American partisan politics is anything but boring.

I don't think anyone actually wrote that headline. Fox just has a random libel generator they activate during election years.
See, I can do it too.
OBAMA FLIP FLOPS, DECLARES WAR ON MARRIAGE
CLINTON CUTS AND RUNS, ATTACKS FREEDOM
PELOSI INSULTS TROOPS, ABORTS JESUS
OLBERMAN ATHEIST GAY TERRORISM EVOLUTION WARMING

Re: This thread is so gay
That was cool, although he said he still supports states making the decision so it's a mostly symbolic thing. Still, good symbol.
In similar news, the incumbent president of France, who was running on an anti same-sex marriage/adoption platform, was defeated by the new president, who was running on a pro same same marriage/adoption platform.
So hopefully same sex marriage and adoption will be a thing in France in the next little while (civil unions are legal right now but that's it).

I hope he keeps his statements only vaguely supportive of gay marriage until the election is over.

I'm almost thinking he should double down, and make gay rights a key campaign issue going into the next election, actually.
What got Obama elected? He energized the political left under a banner of change. So often of late, the democrats have spent their time courting the moderates and swing voters as the republican continues their march into far-right insantiy. The hard was a sure thing, certain to vote for them out of strict lack of choice.
But over the last four years, the hard left has been just as critical of Obama as the right wing has, just for different reasons.
He's seen as too willing to capitulate, putting too much emphasis on "bipartisanship" while comprimising away all the progress that the left wants him to make. He looks soft, and he looks nothing like the man the left thought they were electing.
He hasn't lost the hard left, but he's spent all the capital he had invested in them.
With the fucking three ring circus the republicans have going on right now, Obama is probably going to get much of the moderate vote in this election by default (at least, of those that bother to show up to the polls). The wingbats are all going to go hard republican. This leaves Obama with pretty much one option. He has to get his party base to the polls.
How might he do that? Making a big, polarizing social issue his keystone policy, and taking a hard stance on it would probably go a very long way, particularly since the position he's taking is nominally supported by a majority of American voters anyway.
On the flip side, it might kick the religious hysteria machine into overdrive and totally backfire.
Hell, this alone might backfire, given that voters of visible racial minorities tended to go with obama last election, but have also tended to vote against gay rights in referendoms.
It's a gamble.
That said, I want to see him take this stance, and get re-elected on it, if only so that the next generation of politicians can take office with an openly pro-marriage equality stance, and not be seen as comitting political suicide.

I was talking about this with a friend over dinner. We agreed this seems like a play to cause a rift between traditional Republicans who don't want to get into this much of a social ruckus and Fundamentalist Christian Republicans, possibly either creating a desire for a third party or swinging the vote to the Democrats.

Re: This thread is so gay
I would just rather see him get elected without supporting gay marriage than not get reelected at all. But your option would be ideal, Matt.

I went and read the comments on the ABC article. Why the hell did I do that? Why the hell do I EVER do that?! I need to learn that it'll just make me depressed and angry. >.<

This speech delivered against a LGBT protection ordinance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMANMIe0ZZI is so batshit insane that it's both sad and amusing at the same time. I'm pretty sad that she actually seems to believe ... whatever she's saying. But the stuff that she's saying is just bizzaro.
Re: This thread is so gay
The best part is the guy's reactions behind her. Otherwise it's just sad.

Urgh, she sounds like she's talking with a cock in her mouth, frickin' mumbling and shit.
I managed to watch a bit more than 1/4 of that video, I couldn't muster the will to watch any further than that. Maybe later, but God that woman managed to aggravate me quickly.

I hear only words. I must have really good defences against ignorance.
Its funny how I have European friends who can speak English MUCH better than she can.
If you ever wanted to know what a female homophobic Yoda sounded like, she's a Stella example.

In fairness, it's probable that this woman has a psychological disorder. It's unfortunate, and uncomfortable to watch, but the woman in this video isn't, I expect, in full control of her faculties.
I don't think it's an issue of ignorance.

I can't say I watched the whole video since it was too difficult to but there has to be some ignorance. Buttsecks does not kill people for example.

Buttsecks can kill people in the same way as secks in other hole. If sharp objects are involved for example.

Or that homosexuals molest boys because boys don't have 'the AIDS' yet.
I'm still getting over the shock of listening to her. I keep being amazed by the sheer amount of stupid that people can display.
Edit: Ninja'd

Well, obviously, but I mean that this sort of incoherent stream of consciousness speech is rather more reminiscent of, say, untreated schizophrenia than say, ignorant bigotry.
