London Olympics 2012 NOT opening ceromony

Postby Merrymaker_Mortalis » 31 Jul 2012, 03:03

Your wish is granted empath.

I'm not watching them. But I heard Waterpolo is described as "a huge fight in a swimming pool with a ball" which sounds entertaining.

Aw, thanks! :)

I was planning to start one myself, but it was gonna have to wait until I'd finished with existing threads. ;)

I always thought water polo would be cruel to the horses. ;)

Oh, and silly work  kept me from checking anything yesterday; how's Phelps' aspirations for gold-medal-holding record breaking?

North Korea has three gold medals. United Kingdom has zero.

I'm going to let that sink in for a while.

My mother used to play water polo when she was younger. I've seen a few matches. Officially it's a non-contact sport (Ie, no bodily contact allowed apart from maybe a bit of blocking and shoving) Lets just say unofficially the rules are more: What the referee can't see, goes! (Lots of kicking, scratching, tugging, pushing, shoving, etc going on.)

Main problem with mis-typing is that when someone quotes you, your mistake is immortalised. Is China still obliterating people? And America as always is doing well.

America and china are in the lead on the medal count but dont forget that the US has a dedicated and well funded training program for their "amateur" athletes, China has a sports training village where people live and train year round. In contrast Bolivia's team is made up of 3 lawyers a doctor and two student athletes.

I do enjoy the countries who submit under 15 athletes. You imagine that the team have some very tight relationships. If I was on a team of 13785423 billion I'd feel alone ironically.

I liked those three athlete that marched in under the Olympic flag (from the Netherland Antilles and South Sudan) and did the sweet dance.

Somewhat unrelated, but this warm-up dance by a hurdler is fun...

I'm watching a Canadian kicking an American's ass in Judo right now, let's hope for the best.

Nice one.

I saw the womens fencing final round and I was very disappointed.

Not in the competitors who were fascinating to watch.
Not the sport which can be amazing.

But that when they say "the score is tied they are going to sudden death" in a sword fighting competition they mean "a one minute round where the first touch wins" not "they are now removing their protective clothing and dipping their foils in the barrel of horrible poison."

I was hoping to watch some of the archery events over past days, but unfortunately no-one airs them and I couldn't get a reliable proxy to be able to watch it through BBC iPlayer :-(

I am now hooked on Men's Judo. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE

The rules are crap, though. Totally subjective. And apparently they change every olympics! They haven't even figured them out yet. But whatever.

I am going to be superficial now: buff dudes ripping each other's gis off. The best thing.

Phelps has done it. Though, personally it'd've been more of an achievement if he'd pulled it off while sporting a Mark Spitz moustache.

As for what I've been following the archery and shooting have been pretty good so far, as has what I've seen of the Judo. Speaking of, Judo and Tae Kwan Do are all well and good but there really ought to be more martial arts at the games. Maybe if this MMA scuttlebutt amounts to anything we'll see.

Unrelated tangent, I'm actually going to the games. Got a ticket for Triathlon in Hyde Park on Saturday. Was really angling for Modern Pentathlon (which you must all watch) too, but you can't have it all. Which brings me to a minor request. I'd appreciate it if any Londoners had a spare bit of floor board on Friday night which a guy could sleep on (or failing that know's someone who does).

Bit of a long shot asking like this on such short notice but Triathlon starts at 9.00a.m. and the place'll be open for at least an hour beforehand. Granted, I'm not traveling halfway across the country and I won't have to deal with TfL, so worst case I'm not overexerting myself to be there, but it'd be nice not having to get up too much earlier or having to deal with the hassle of entering London during rush hour.

I think countries only show coverage of events people from their countries are in. Or the more ego-countries.

Depends, I don't watch TV, because I don't like giving up the control of what I am seeing, so I watch online. I get between four and six streams all day of basically everything that happens. Yesterday I was watching equestrian cross country for about four hours, because it was interesting. But to be perfectly honest, most events I watch until my athletes dropped out and then switch to somewhere else.

Because I'm in the UK I can watch every event through www.bbc.com/sport/0/ I missed the first hour of the Gymnastics today and by pressing the reset I went back and watched it all. I can even go back a few days too.

I have been surprised by the coverage here, they have showed 4 events that not only did the Americans not medal in but didnt even have a chance at a good showing.
