Granted, I'll still need to wait for Mac support, but that should only be another couple of years right?
Re: Black Mesa Mod finally coming out!
I still don't quite believe it.

Well, it's still not quite finished; Xen remains to be done. But it's being released with a 'to be concluded' once you jump through the portal. Does that make it seem more real?
Re: Black Mesa Mod finally coming out!
Yeah, trying to make Xen good is a challenge and a half.

You think they'll upgrade Nihilanth's audio? I couldn't understand a thing he was saying.
All problems can be solved by trebuchets and/or fire.

Somehow now I know it's coming out those 9 days feel longer than the years we've been waiting.

Y'know, for all the times I've played Half Life 1, I've never actually beaten it. Perhaps i finally will...

What? It's not that hard, especially if you look up a guide when you're stuck.

Re: Black Mesa Mod finally coming out!
I thought ZP's retrospective review on it was pretty good, including highlighting some weak points that in hindsight seem pretty inexplicable. On the other hand, it really was an astonishing leap forward for the FPS genre.

Difficulty never had anything to do with it. I just never got into it for long enough to play through as a kid, then I lost my disks, and was never interested enough in more recent years to find it again.

It was the first game I actually finished. I Ran out of ammo because I didn't understand nihilanth's weak spot. Ended up jumping onto his head and crowbarring him.
BM:source needs to permit that or I'll be miffed.

Due to some legal issues they are not allowed to use any of the original Valve assets, so Nihilanth's audio will have been rerecorded.
and now; back to me.
Re: Black Mesa Mod finally coming out!
So, Black Mesa is out and it is.. alright. They made a couple pretty bad choices in terms of controls and movement though.
They clearly wanted jumping changed, so that there was only one real jump height, but their solution is completely ass-backwards. Rather than remove the jump-height benefit of crouch jumping (thus making it useful simply for getting into vents) they made the normal jump completely worthless. As it stands I've yet to find an obstacle that I could simply jump over. I either run over them, or I crouch jump over them. Jumping was such a simple pleasure in HL, and now it is frustrating and broken.
Also, they changed the run speed. It is a fair bit slower (still faster than most shooters) but you get a sprint, or well.. a faster run. Sprinting is unlimited, and there is even an option to just always sprint, but the problem is that sprinting is a bit too fast. Dodging attacks is too easy while perma-sprinting, and a bit too difficult while using the normal run. Much like with jumping they took something that wasn't broken and tried to fix it in all the wrong ways.
The worst part is that the game as a whole is pretty good, I really like some of the changes they've made; it is fairly pretty, the voice acting is some of the best I've seen from a fangame, and the tongue-in-cheek jokes at HL1 are wonderful. However the moment to moment action is so awkward and broken than it brings down everything.
