Shouldn't that be "I HAVE officially..."?

Unless you've changed your name...

"I am officially finished..." is an acceptable and grammatically correct alternative.

"...changed you're name..." on the other hand, is not.

your - personal possessive
you're - "you are"

:p

"I am officially finished university" ? Really? Show me. If you added a "with", I'd agree, but otherwise, I have trouble.

Fine, I'll grant that "I am finished with university" would be tighter grammatically, but I still contend that "I am finished university" is acceptable.

"I am" - to exist (present tense)
"finished" - the state of having completed a task
"university" - an institution for post secondary education - in this case being used as a short-hand for the education itself.

"I am finished university" - I currently exist in the state of having completed my university education.

also, this thread has taken internet-based grammar-fascism to a whole new level, thanks for that, tensen. :\

"I am finished university" is not acceptable English.

"I am finished, university!" would be, though.

a) "I am finished university" is a perfectly acceptable sentence.

b) Congratulations, Matt! (are you sure you passed all your exams? ;))

As someone going through the rigors of a 6+3+2 year program, I am very happy for you, Matt. Congratulations!
If you don't mind my asking, what degree did you finish with? (it might have been mentioned before but my memory is fawlty)

P.S. Also, plus points for the Col. Klink reference.

Only if you're using 'university' as a verb.

No... because 'am' is the verb. The emphasis in the sentence is on am, which is the verb being used. By saying "I am finished university" Matt is saying his status, which is 'finished university.' He is not saying what he has done.

And it makes complete sense.
