Unofficial Desert Bus Challenges Conversation Thread OF DOOM

Postby Lancer » 26 Oct 2012, 00:10

SO. This thread is a twofold discussion:
FIRST: More casual conversation, what sorts of challenges are hot for this year's desert bus? Anything we can force Matt to watch this year?

SECONDLYYY. There's a new method of submitting challenges in DB6, as announced via YouTube. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQvzV4v0dZ4&lc ) Seems like a general improvement... but, there could obviously be problems. Since there didn't seem to be a desert bus board, I figured this place was the best to start a thread where the community could discuss it.

For those of you who haven't seen the video yet, challenges are effectively free now (mostly... larger challenges will remain crowdfunded). In addition, you can submit challenges at any time! No more scrambling when they open up the challenge submissions! Surely this spells panic and chaos? Well not so, because when they decide it's time to do challenges, the system will spawn up a couple of randomly selected challenges for the DB crew to see, rather than giving them the whole gigantic list.

(warning, small rant begins here)
It sounds great to me, but I think that this could end up leading to a lot of the more requested challenges drowning out the less requested ones. Sounds like randomized democracy now, so that's all well and good, but when you're getting your fiftieth straight page of Caramelldansen an hour into the marathon, maybe not so much. I think it'd be a good idea to be able to search through the requests on given keywords or categories. For instance, when someone submits caramelldansen, they'll put it under the "dance" category. If someone submits a challenge to sing This is Halloween, it'll go under the "song" category, and so on. When the system generates the random list to show to the Bussers, then the system could either choose one sort of challenge you really want to do or you could get a couple from each category ensuring more even distribution. By having a search feature you could even search for more specific sorts of challenges, because just doing Caramelldansen isn't enough, you've gotta know who they want to do it and in what hats! So you could search "Caramelldansen" and get random requests that include that word. Just a thought, and it's doubtful you'd be able to implement something like that in time for this year's DB, but it might be nice for next year.

I'm assuming the system will have a "we have done this already" button to select a new random challenge for the crew. So the crew can still choose NOT to do Caramelldansen for the 50th time.

Perhaps an idea may be to use a filter based on what crew are available at the time - so if say Matt is not available but Dale or Alex are you could filter out challenges for those specific people, rather than randomly select a challenge for someone who isn't there?

I'm saying this because I have a challenge in mind that really only Matt can do.

Yeah, we don't have to do a challenge, and we'll mark it as "nope" so that it won't show up when we query for another 5.

We HAVE thought about this.

If they're there, they'll do it. If not, it won't happen then.

We got way to bogged down last year in "okay, but later" and then not doing it. The idea here is to make this fast, and simple.

If that means it could be more difficult to get X to do Y challenge, that might just be the case.
BUT, you can always prod us in the chat too. Since it's busking challenges ad hoc, we just DO that.

So, here's the something I thought of regarding duplicate challenges from multiple people.

If you get 100 people requesting Caramelldansen, you're probably going to see it come up every single time you refresh for dance challenges, even if it's random. And then after you've done it once in a given period, you'll have to mark it "Done" every single time you refresh. Maybe you can have a search system by word, so you can search for "Caramelldansen" to find all of them and mass-flag all of them as done. Then, when you refresh, you can end up seeing different things instead.

This would cut down on a bunch of refresh time, even if several people word the same challenge differently, as you'll at least get most of them, if not all.

Regarding the original post, as to what's hot... I know there's going to be a bunch of challenges for Gangnam Style.

It's either Pony or Gangnam related challenges, what do you prefer?

Well if I have to get ninja'd, it may as well be by Fugiman =P
Yea, I'll include that in the OP now so that people will see that.

Also: I doubt they'll make it one day without doing Gangnam Style challenge. Prepare your mute button if you're so inclined. I'll probably be dancing along with them =P

Thank you. I checked that channel, but missed the video somehow.

Also, note on the video: Very clear and professional looking. Good job LRR! You guys are getting better at this whole "insane video game marathon collecting money for the children" thing! :-P

Somehow watching that video I really felt I needed to make that comment.

Why would it be EST? They're in the Pacific time zone. They've started at 6 in the past, but I trust them to use their own zone.

It's not an error. The start time this year has changed. Previously, it's been 6pm PST. This year however, it will be 9pm PST. Trust us, there are carefully thought-out reasons for this.

There will also be more news to come related to the start of Desert bus. Stay tuned for updates.

What if we want to have a specific person do a specific task and are willing to pay a large sum of money to make them do it?

I have something in mind for one specific person and a pile of money to make them do it.

It would be nice if there was a separate queue with a minimum donation requirement ($50 or something, pushed upward if necessary to keep it manageable), so if there's something we REALLY want done and are willing to pay for it, it's easier to get it noticed. Is there already some way to indicate that you wish for a challenge to be crowdfunded?

I know I would donate for Tally and Jer to do a duet of "Little Talks" by Of Monsters and Men. I think the song is beautiful and it would be awesome if the two of them really wanted to do it. :)
