Ni No Kuni
Has anyone else picked this game up?
I've played about an hour of it and so far am enjoying the charm and characters in it. Drippy (Lord High Lord of the Fairies) is possibly one of the best side kicks of games (at least so far.) The combat seems interesting, but I don't know yet as I've only had about 2 battles.

big ghibli and rpg fan so i have been waiting a long time for this. played the demo to death. all the reviews say the battle system is slow to open up in early stages so dont worry.
the boss battles from demo really show the staggering depth to the combat.
im so pissed its been delayed a week in UK. oh well

I played the preview so many times at cons. I cannot wait for it to be released over here.

I've pre-ordered it and I should get a pre-order bonus book about the game. That is if GAME doesn't mess up a pre-order bonus...again.

I really want to, I love Studio Ghibli's films, but I don't own a PS3 or DS

Saw this previewed at MCM in October. It looked good.

A couple more hours into it and the combat is a bit wonky. It's not terrible but it's not really all that interesting as of yet. You get new familiars (the SMT style monster friends) but they start at level one and take a lot of battles to get to the point of usefulness. Which is unfortunate because each one has it's own unique mechanic, but if you bring them into battle with them being underleveled then you're pretty much dead.
I'm going to keep at it though.

Thinking of picking this up - are we talking standard generic JRPG that is pretty or are we talking innovative gameplay too?
How much monster collection is required? That was my least favourite part of FFXIII-2 and is something I endure in SMT/Persona because once you have them set up the combat is fun.

I don't know yet honestly. The monster collection is something that seems to come once you get your second character (the blonde girl you've probably seen in the trailers.) I haven't gotten that far yet. Otherwise all the familiars you get (or at least the first couple) are bound to the story.

I'd love to pick this one up, but I've decided to limit my spending on video games at the moment, so I can focus more on actually finishing my degree with a decent result.
Will probably insist someone gets it for my birthday though, thoroughly enjoyed the demo, big fan of Ghibli and games of the genre, and the fact they use regional British voice actors is a major plus for me.

the gameplay is a perfect mix of the old style jrpgs and the newer ones. the combat is really good but it does take a lot of time to really open up and show its real depth.
the monster collection is by no means required according to all the reviews i read. you can get through the game with the familiars you get via the story. it is encouraged though as you eventually get a party of 3 with 3 familiars each in battle so putting together a balanced team of 9 is part of the games appeal.

Re: Ni No Kuni
I'm now sort of regretting not getting the Wizard's Edition. Want that Drippy plushie. So bad.
Although with the reported problems with overselling, I might have been disappointed either way.
I've put about 50 hours into Ni no Kuni since its release. So far it's a fantastic game; definitely worth the price tag. The sidequests (a big deal for me in JRPGs) are varied and worth doing for the rewards. The story isn't too complex but there are enough mysteries to keep me wondering. Battle system isn't my favourite but many of the familiars are unique/adorable. (I'm really glad they tried to steer away from generic monster types in favour of some healthy variety.)
By far my favourite part of the game is the world. It starts off slow, but when the whole world gradually opens up to you, it's a joy to explore. Once I got the dragon mount I proceeded to explore everywhere I could. The musical score is also delightful.
My main gripe is that despite how well reported the "Studio Ghibli animation" was, there are not nearly enough 2D animated movies in the game; most of the cutscenes are in 3D with the game's engine. Not a dealbreaker, but potentially disappointing to any Ghibli fans.

Re: Ni No Kuni
I still haven't started this game yet. : (
Do people recommend that I wait until the weekend so that I can play an almost day long session, or a smaller evening session?
Essentially, how long does it take to get interesting. Since I'm assuming this has, like all JRPGs, the mandatory (kind of dull) introductory section(s).

A full day to start would be a good idea. It takes a few hours to pick up, in my opinion.

Re: Ni No Kuni
Just started playing it, this game is pretty funny and good. Although I hope the plot gets a bit more complex, since I think I've already called a few things it tried to unsubtly allude to.
Like: When King Tom goes missing, I immediately called that the mice had taken him to the sewers, but I had to spend 20-30 minuets of going back and forth before Oli finally worked out where he was. I hate it when games force you to take the baby steps to the solution instead of allowing you to go straight to the answer. Yeah, I know that it allowed for some more exposition and introduce a couple of characters, but it's still quiet annoying.

Re: Ni No Kuni
I'm at the third village and from what I hear the plot doesn't get much more complex, but apparently there are some "dark turns" with regards to Drippy later on. I don't know what that means however.
Also I've noticed I've been saying "Flippin' heck" and the like a lot recently.

Re: Ni No Kuni
The one thing I hate about Drippy is when they put "Mun" and "Youer" in the subtitles. He's not saying some weird word, he's just saying "man" and "you're/your" in a Welsh accent. Subtitles are meant to be for helping hear what they're saying, not making it confusing. In the non spoken text, yes, I can understand that, in the subtitles, no.

If only we'd get the DS edition outside of Japan... I'm hungry for a solid portable JRPG.

What if Alan Turing came up with the test because he was actually a robot and wanted people to find out?

for me the plot has gotten interesting after the Hamelin section which i just finished.
i have played a shit load of this game already. 35 hours and i would guess only the half way point in the story. the pokemon fan in me just has to catch all the familiars in every dungeon before i move on. and some of them are a pain to catch but i still love battling to get them. and now i have unlocked the sage trials and the friggin casino. at this rate ill get around to tomb raider and bioshock sometime next winter, lol.
i gotta say though the skeleton casino is awesome. while clearly a ghibli game from the art style i felt this was the first area that really had that special ghibli charm we love from the movies. just going around and talking to the npcs really made me feel i was playing a ghibli movie.
