I picked up the "A House Divided" expansion for Victoria 2 last week.
This is from one of my current games; the eight countries at the top of the Diplomacy window are the 'Great Powers'. I'm the eighth. :D

Been balancing my playtime between Dragon's Dogma and Asura's Wrath.
It's funny how two games about punching things larger than yourself can be so completely and utterly different in every other way (and still both be Capcom games).

Didn't want to rez the Alpha Protocol thread, so I'll rez this one instead.

I'm confused about how alarms work in this game. Do they go away eventually, or do I HAVE to disable them? Also, is EVERY guard on alert or just the ones nearby? Also, also, how easy is it to set off an alarm? I've set off a couple accidentally by getting spotted, but does a gun automatically make them go off?

They don't go away on their own (or in some levels, when you leave the building they're in, I believe), and they alert every guard in the area, if I recall correctly.

I played the game with a controller, and alarm hacking was by far the most problematic mini-game. I'd recommend stocking up on a couple of radio mimics, which only cost about $200 and are one use "turn off alarm" items. Alternatively, put a point into Sabotage if you haven't already, then you can use an EMP grenade to bypass any of the three mini-games.

Thanks for the info. I'm a tech specialist so I've got a few points in Sabotage. Given that, are there any skills I should focus on? I've got the silent step skill, awareness, and whatever overclock does.

As for the mini game hacking, I really dislike the text one (Don't remember what it's for) cuz my mind has a hard time focusing on the text that isn't continuously changing. I constantly have to back out of that one and try again.

Most of the different skills are worth taking (except submachine guns, which are pretty awful). That said, you'd definitely be wise to stick with stealth, because the invisibility is hugely overpowered, especially once you get the final ability (30 second invisibility that doesn't end unless you run or shoot, which means you can you can melee kill/knock out a whole room of enemies if you're quick.)

Pistols are worth putting some points into usually, since the Chain Shot ability makes the pesky bosses a lot more manageable. The Technical Aptitude tree is only really good if you use a lot of gadgets, although the Brilliance ability you get at level eight is amazingly powerful if you combine it with Chain Shot. Toughness is obviously not bad to have, but if you're playing very stealthily you probably won't need it.

All that said, there's no wrong choice (again, aside from SMGs). I think the most important thing is to not spread your points around too much. You'll want to have one of the weapon skills or Martial Arts pretty high, so that the enemies don't end up too far above your power level.

Any quick (non-spoiler) tips on Deus Ex HR and not screwing myself over before I start?

If you're going to be building yourself around stealth and light weapons, make sure you get the typhoon so that you don't have to tear your hair out at the boss fights.

I found that the first half of the game is generally a lot easier if you take a stealthy approach, but towards the end you'll want to focus a lot more on combat (or at least be prepared for a massive difficulty ramp-up).

Alternatively, just kill everyone.

I managed to get through with 100% non lethality (though I didn't get the achieve due to some random cops shooting a guy I was fighting)

In a lot of ways I found working with non-lethal weapons to be easier. The Tazer is just astounding. Perfectly silent, one hit KO anywhere on the body. It's just great.

That said the bosses were stupidly annoying for the most part given this kind of sneaky non-lethal character build. Defending the helijet was a pain too though I did eventually manage to get that done.

I have no idea how one would defend the helijet without killing anybody, but good on you for managing it.

It was basically this kind of tazer blitzkrieg around the map with a reckless disregard for my own safety. Having the double melee KO was especially useful too.

I think I had to end up commedeering a sniper rifle to take out the spider tank at the end.

I generally favor a mixed approach of "sneaking around until I can't/can't be arsed" in all my games, so lets see if that works...

Okay, the thing to remember is you earn 'XP' which can be put towards upgrades, and you get MORE XP for making a non-lethal takedown than for blowing someone away; and even more if you can get close and use either type of 'melee finishing move'. Which means I spent as much of my time as possible sneaking up as close as I could to enemies and pulling non-lethal specials on as many of them as I could (and upping my 'bioenergy battery' and getting to that 'double takedown' ability as soon as I could), so again, the game itself subtly encourages you to be less lethal in your efforts.

I DID manage to save Malik without killing anyone...once, in maybe a day's worth of attempts.

And not long after, Steam decided it wanted to patch my game and I got stuck with that damn "Suspended Download" issue again. :( Since my landlord upgraded the internet cxn, the game patched properly but I ended up losing my saves...your interest is rekindling my interest...maybe I should try to actually FINISH the game this time? :)

Get is working smoothly on a contemporary PC and yeah, it's a pretty cool ride (think I ran one playthrough how people recommend DHXR; non-lethal for all except the bosses).

And Warren & Co™ set the standard for throroughness in programming & game development - I don't ever remember managing to reach anywhere that was the equivalent of 'blue hell' (there were stories of people using explosives for 'rocketjumping' and the like, but I could never pull off what one walkthrough suggested); heck, if you can conceive of the course of action, Ion Storm Austin probably prepared some NPC barks to comment on it. :D

SOME people can run the game straight from the old disc with no trouble at all and others have to fiddle with drivers, settings and whatnot for ages; I hope you're one of the former!

I think *I* even played a bit of the original, seeing as it was AVAILABLE ON MAC

Good to know, good to know... my first encounter with four guys, I definitely got shot a few times before I figured the ol' "chum the waters"... drop one guy with a tranq dart, another comes to investigate, drop him... etc. I'm guessing that strategy won't work later on, though.

That is pretty much the standard strategy I used for most of the game.

It gets easier once you get a few mods. Only thing I didn't like was that you would only recharge one energy cell. To get more you had to eat energy bars.

That always struck me as odd. "I need a charge! Let's eat ALL THE CANDY." Sounds like me. But it really made choosing energy-requiring upgrades pointless, especially if you needed more than one.

I don't think I killed anyone in my runthrough. I went stealth non-lethal but got neither. Can't remember why off hand... I think it was one level where I killed someone by mistake. And I think the stealth was buggered by saving Malik. I remember for her I took a couple tries and saved her by doing a speed run where I knocked people out using the takedown, tased a few, used the darts to knock out some more, and EMP'd the tank.

Going on another semi-related tangent, I've never played the original Deus Ex. I played the second game a long while back and thought it was alright. My main problem is that I can't really play PC games that don't use a controller. This is in part due to the fact I'm not good with a mouse and keyboard. But it's more due to the fact that my current setup makes it incredibly difficult to do so.

Well, [i]Invisible War[i] wasn't quite as BAD as everyone made it out to be - it was a competent game in its own right - but when you compare it to the FIRST game, it can't help but come off as 'dumbed down'.

And if you want to grab the "Pacifist" achievement, the key thing to remember that you have to go non-lethal FROM THE START (right back in the 'prologue') - I remember reading about GeoffB figuring out he'd been denied the accolade because he actually used his automatic rifle at the pre-augmented start of the game, and deciding to start over after about 1/3 the way through...dunno if I'd bother trying for it this time, remembering how much pain it was trying to keep Malik AND all the Belltower guards alive...

It was so long ago that I played through it that I'm honestly not sure what the cause was. I don't think I killed anyone even in the pre-augemented segement, but I'm not sure.
