While I'm fairly sure everyone who would want to be aware of it is aware of it, there's a Kickstarter for Tomorrow Girl, a book form of the first five years of Dresden Codak, a beautifully illustrated webcomic. It's one of those comics famous for rarely updating, but being so gorgeous that it's worth it. Anyone here watch Job Hunters? Well, they just started their campaign for Season Two!

For the uninitiated, here's the breakdown:

In a not-so-distant dystopian future, the Mandatory Arena Education Worldwide Initiative, also known as MAEWIN, has been established to solve the rampant unemployment problem by streamlining the job interview process. Upon your eighteenth birthday, you are summoned to one of MAEWIN's state of the art housing facilities, where you will spend your nights relaxing and bonding with your fellow job hunters. During the days, you are put into the arena where cameras will follow your every move to assess your hiring potential. If a company likes your spunk, you can be hired and leave the arena with a new job. However, this is not the only way you can leave. You see, the arena is where you are pitted against the other job hunters in a true battle to the death. It gives new meaning to the term "cutthroat".

Was about to post this when i saw that it was already posted.
One of the most interesting things besides the movie itself is what this means for other shows that didn't get a proper send off.
Shawn Ryan who was behind the Terriers tv series has already taken notice as he tweetet "Very interested to see how this Veronica Mars kickstarter goes. Could be a model for a Terriers wrap up film."
All this depends on the movie getting funded but it is at 1,5 million in under a day

Haha holy fucking shit it just passed 2 million dollars in less than a day.

I am very excited that there is going to be a Veronica Mars movie, but

I am more excited about the fact that this proves that a big "real life" project can really happen via direct fan-sourced crowd-funding. Like, this is not an internet thing, or a video game thing, or an arts project in someone's garage. This is a film based on a media property owned by Warner Brothers.

This is really bad news for studios and middlemen, and really great news for basically everybody else.

Welcome to the waste-bin of the future, traditional movie studios.

I was not into Veronica Mars when I was younger. It just never interested me. However, of all the properties I'd love to see more of as a movie, it would be Gilmore Girls. YES THAT'S RIGHT I SAID IT!

But then I see a tweet today from Lauren Graham:

There's a Roller Coaster Simulator needing Kickstarter aid.

It seems to be a cross between Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise with NoLimits (a sophisticated roller coaster simulator).

It seems to support casual Coaster enthusiasts and hardcore CAD enthusiasts alike. You can build like you can in Theme Park (or Sim Theme Park) or Roller Coaster Tycoon. Or build with numerical values like you do in physics simulators. Or in between.

Basically the Roller Coaster Tycoon franchise won't expand on the PC. Atari sees no money for that. So if you're like me who has to make do with modding Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (which is a decade old), this game will be awesome.

On top of building your own coasters, you can build your own flatrides (basically those fairground-type rides). You can build parks. Highly customisable scenery. Sharing content is encouraged.

I'm super psyched.

It does seem rather gimmicky, and useless. Replacing lights with plant does not seem feasible. Sure, they may not use "electricity", but they still use energy that has to come from somewhere, namely photosynthesis. Florescent bulbs hooked up to solar panels, or other natural energy source, is probably going to be more scalable and efficient.

That said, as far as gimmicks go, there are certainly worse ones.

That said, as far as gimmicks go, there are certainly worse ones.

I agree, it is really a been-there-done-that thing and as to feasibility as light source:

- How are they going to get tissue specificity? (becomes a problem when you move to bigger plants especially as this won't emit light through bark and has no use in roots) Without tissue specificity it would be quite a wasteful process in bigger plants that are more long-lived e.g. trees. The same would be the case for winter (i.e. every cell still producing bioluminescence even when there is no photosynthesis during the day, at least for most plants in moderate climates)
- The ATP supply. It has to come from somewhere, during the night that means from carbohydrate stores most likely. This will lead to partial depletion of these stores and massive losses of fixed carbon AND loss of CO2 at excessive rates (relative to normal respiration during the night) for the entire night (unless a CAM photosynthesis-like mechanism is included which would require MASSIVE changes to the metabolism and physiology of the plant that we definitely cannot do yet) i.e. odds are for more long-lived plants this would mean severe reduction in growth rate.
