Re: Gif or Jif?
What I mainly don't get is why people keep talking like the creator making his wild and inaccurate claims about pronunciation is something news-worthy. Just because someone reiterates a position they've publicly held for 25 years doesn't an "announcement" make.
On the other hand, it's not like the creator did much, anyway... just stuck an image in an already-existing compression algorithm and slapped a name on it. A compression algorithm that was patented, at that, which caused a lot of fun (did the Webby's just forget about Unisys?). So I guess it makes sense that the only part of the whole award thing that anyone cares about is the pronunciation comment. But I'm confused as to why even that became a thing.
Really, though, I wish we could just stop talking about that limited, obsolete, once-patent-encumbered format entirely, and convince browser-makers to start supporting APNG. Because really, if we had a good replacement for animated GIFs, there'd be no reason for GIF to exist at all any more, and the world would be a better place.
Also, hard G, because analogy with the word "gift", being the only English word that starts with G-I-F.

Re: Gif or Jif?
I used to pronounced it jif but since then I heard so many people use a hard G that I changed the way I say it, and the old way sounds wrong now.
Incidentally, since it was used as an example, I pronounce gibberish with a hard G, too.

Hard G for me.
We are all made of star dust. However we are also made of nuclear waste.
Remember to think before you post.
Re: Gif or Jif?
This thread gets way more interesting if you interpret "Hard G" to mean "penis."

I think the fact that to get the pronunciation across everybody is having to write it as Jif says it all really.

This right here. gif reads as hard-g unless someone has told you it's pronounced "jif."

This is like that Cash or Kayche argument over the word cache.
Its Gif... GGGiiiffff. the creator be dammed.
also at work everyone calls it Kayche to dig that old argument back up.

My stepfather and stepsister call it Kayshe. I'd never heard pronounced that way before. It's just wrong.

Who did you eat the neck of and kill Graham?
Is that the real reason that Bill and Morgan haven't been around for videos? did you kill them?
