I'm just waiting for someone to ask him "who died and made you king of the universe" and for him to go all serious and say "everyone"

Re: Who should play the Twelfth Doctor?
I'd like the twelfth Doctor to be a woman. That would be a very interesting twist to the character, as well as to the show itself. Though I don't feel like there's any stagnation in either, that would certainly open up new possibilities.
A silly thought occurred to me when I was musing on the subject: if the age of the Doctor's regeneration is pretty much random, could we end up with a child Doctor at some point? I doubt a child actor would be able to pull it off, but I've seen genius child actors before. At the very least, some kind of Children in Need / Rednose shortie with such a plot twist would be very fun. ^^
My "casting fantasies that will never be" include Dame Judi Dench, Catherine Tate, Timothy Dalton and Simon Pegg. Among the suggestions I've seen here, Hugh Laurie and Rowan Atkinson get a wholehearted "HELL yes!". Though I adore Cumberbatch - and I do believe he has the makings of a great Doctor - I agree with the fact that his Sherlock background would get in the way.
But to be perfectly honest, I just wish Matt Smith wasn't leaving so soon. Of course I knew it was coming - eventually. And I'm confident that I will love whoever steps in - eventually. But Eleven is the only Doctor I've followed 'live' since his first aired appearance, since the very announcement of Ten's regeneration. To quote Elizabeth Bennet, "I didn't always love him, but I love him now so very dearly".
To the future Twelve: the shoes you have to fill are infinitely bigger on the inside.
TLDR: Love the idea of a female Doctor. Some great suggestions here (Laurie and Atkinson FTW). *dissolves into tears at the thought of Eleven's upcoming regeneration*

Blanket statements against a female Doctor (on the internet) are annoying me. Saying you're not sexist won't stop the statement from coming across as sexist. Explaining why you don't want a female Doctor will stop you coming across as sexist, it will make you look like you have an opinion to respect.

Re: Who should play the Twelfth Doctor?
I am not upset in the least to see Matt Smith go, I dont think he had enough experience to pull off the roll, when "most" of the other doctors transitioned from happy to serious or silly to mad they changed, when Matt smith was being happy he said happy words, when Matt smith was being mad he would crinkle his forehead and say mad words.

One of the lesser-known Muppets. Maybe one from Fraggle Rock.

Re: Who should play the Twelfth Doctor?
According to the Mirror, Rupert Grint or Russell Tovey are the front runners. However, those same bookmakers give Billie Piper... yes, the one who already had a prominent role on the show, 16/1 odds.
Ah-huh.
Sue Perkins!
(FWIW, Rupert Grint's a poor call; I like the guy, but I think he's a touch goofy for the role. No opinion on Tovey.)

Re: Who should play the Twelfth Doctor?
I have nothing against Rupert Grint, I just don't think he's right for that role. After this Matt Smith bit, I think we need to go back to someone a little older.

Yeah, that's also a good point. I like Tovey as an actor in what little I've seen of him. I could live with Tovey.
What about someone like Vas Blackwood? Guy's a vet of British TV and film, shown an aptitude for both comedy and drama, and casting a black man would be likewise pretty brave for Who. I'm pretty sure I'm only shortening saying Doctor Who now to mess with MattAn.

I could have sworn I'd already responded to this thread, but apparently not.
My vote goes to Idris Elba.

If the next doctor is a woman, this video ends a little differently.

Rupert Grint couldn't do gravitas if his life depended on it.
And I like Russel Tovey but he's goofy and super young, and we just had a goofy, super young Doctor. Variety is the spice of life.
Someone older, please.

I wish he hadn't been in it already because Anthony Head would be fantastic. He can do both deadpan/serious stuff as well as the utterly ridiculous (give Bleak Expectations a listen).
