The New Timezones
Re: The New Timezones
I work with musicians a lot, and... well... you could do 2 or 3 more episodes of this just covering the various Musician Time Zones.
Re: The New Timezones
The biggest problem with PTT is that everyone is going to be calling it PTT-time... (yes, that is Party Time Time Time)
And as for daylight savings time: it might not actually be too useful in our current economy. Since everyone is staying up 'till about 2 AM on average... it might actually be costing us more energy in total.
Has there ever been any serious research done into that? It might be a thing of the past really.

I was thinking about Nate and his LoadingReadyLabs theme a few days ago. Good to hear it again.

As far as I know, it's essentially just a relic now.

What's the conversion from PTT to Hammer Time (or "HT")?

I think we should be on daylight savings time year round. It does make things needlessly complicated for little reason.

Australia only does daylight-savings time for half the states. I live in one that does. I work in one that does not.
Fuck daylight-savings time.

That tangent, on the legs... Have ye learned nothing from the trials of Abby?
Also, I'd be more than willing to give a new system of timezones a try... I curse this round earth every time I'm getting ready to leave for work on Friday, and get a notification that LRRMtG has started streaming...
Also: Daylight Savings can eat all the dicks. One of the main points of the idea was that it would save on lighting by having people awake for more of the time the sun is up... but electricity usage these days is dominated by things like computers that use the same amount of power DST or no, so the benefits are either negligible, 0, or even negative, depending on how much air conditioners are used in the area in question. Add the negative effects of fucking with everyone sleep schedule twice a year, and the resulting biannual loss of productivity and spike in the road toll, and the whole thing seems like a bad plan.

I was really hoping there would be a Pirate Time, which would nicely tie together the last time I remember that music.

I must be the only one that has been so beaten down by being told that it isn't Daylight Savings Time and that it's just Daylight Saving Time. Either way, it's worthless.

Locally, some friends of mine also deal with SRT- Standard Ruben Time, which adds at least 45-90 minutes to any time to meet. When one of us will be late, we will joke that we are 'Running on Ruben Time".
Don't also forget: OMT Time- this is Civilization "One More Turn" time. There is also TVTT- TV Tropes Time- essentially endless- say goodbye- you will NEVER see this person again. If you do, you are mandated to check the temperature in Hell before greeting said person. And VT- Valve Time, which is when the numbers drop off the clock and it reads, "Whenever".

Re: The New Timezones
Interestingly, the British government actually tried getting rid of BST (our equivalent to Daylight Savings) as an experiment, but the northern Scots complained vehemently for reasons I don't quite remember off the top of ma head and the idea got shut down. I know this because there is a news item about it every f***ing year when the clocks change because bankers in the city want to synchronise watches with the European markets.

...just out of interest, is that an Irish history reference or are we just railing against the nation of Scotland for the hell of it?

Re: The New Timezones
One quite confusing thing is that Queensland does not follow daylight savings time but New South Wales, the state directly south of Queensland, does. If you live in the northern most part of New South Wales like one of my closest friends, the closest city (and airport with regular service) is Gold Coast in Queensland which is an hour off half the year. This leads to wonderful things such as arriving before you left on a 45 minute drive.

Re: The New Timezones
Hey, at least the daylight saving time changeovers are at the same time in all the Australian states that have DST... that used to not be the case. So normally NSW is 30 minutes ahead of SA, then NSW would get DST and become 90 minutes ahead of SA, then a couple weeks later SA would get DST and it'd be back to a 30 minute difference.
