I listened to episode one last night when I couldn't sleep. Wow, is this good.

It is, though I don't imagine it would help with being unable to sleep.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
See, half of me loves the idea of a tattooed Cecil...
And the other half of me's convinced he doesn't have any skin to tattoo. Just the ghost of voices over the radio wires personified. And...yes, made flesh, so perhaps he does have tattoos. But when somebody looks into his eyes, all they can see is...radio static...

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
I bet Steve Carlsberg is either head to toe tattoo or not tattooed at all, depending on whether you think they mark you out as a good Night Vale citizen or a bad one.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
I'm really enjoying it. I just find that the background music drowns Cecil out a lot. I know there are instances where it is supposed to, but for me the levels just seem off when it's just incidental background music. Bedding I think is the correct radio term for it.
Does that improve at all in more recent episodes?
Also, given that that is my only complaint, you know it's probably good.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
I honestly didn't notice bgm being a problem until my second time through, at which point it became glaringly obvious in the first episode. So I suspect it does in fact get balanced better over time. But so does much of the show, really, as they get into a groove and Cecil really finds his voice.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
I'm only a few episodes in. But why does all the fan art of Cecil have him with a 3rd eye tatooed on his forehead? Or is that meant to be Carlos? To be honest I'm mostly only seeing slash fanart on tumblr and don't know which is meant yo be which...

Tumblr fandom has started to portray Cecil as having tattoos, and often a third eye on his forhead. He's often blond, sort of lanky, and wears purple sweater-vests.
Fandom Carlos is usually latino or otherwise dark skinned, with gorgeous, gorgous hair, and teeth like a military cemetary. He's usually wearing a labcoat.
There's no good reason for most of the Cecil choices. The fandom hivemind has just converged on that representation. There's no actual description in the series of what Cecil looks like.
Obviously there's a lot of slash fanart. You're a few episodes in, so it should be abundantly clear that Cecil has a crush on Carlos.
Re: Welcome to Night Vale
Indeed, that much is obvious. I loved the episode where he was describing Carlos' haircut.
I'm fascinated how the fandom hivemind works to have converged on that. Given that the tattoo was such a common thing in all of the artwork I'd assumed that maybe there was a throwaway line somewhere that mentioned it.
Has anybody done any research into how the hivemind works? If not I think I know just the guy...

So, I was at the AyaCon pub quiz, last event of the con before we all trudge home to our normal lives, and I turned around and saw that our little anime convention was being covered by local community radio...

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
I've seen some good other types of Cecil as well, to be fair. I think tumblr just likes making him dapper, and since he's voiced by a white guy, it's not too improbable to connect the voice with a white character. I've seen some awesome non-white Cecils, though, so it's not all-pervasive.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
Just out of curiosity, is anyone here going to any of the upcoming live shows? The idea of a live solo-narrated podcast seems a bit strange to comprehend.
(I obtained tickets to the LA show anyway. Haven't been out in a couple years and it was a good excuse.)

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
I wish I was, but sadly no.
I have decided that Carlos has a big 80s hair rock hairdo, and is in fact in a glam rock tribute band with all the other scientists.
Nothing can convince me otherwise.

Ahh, I LOVE Night Vale. Started listening to it a few weeks ago, just got to 'A Story About You', which is my favourite so far.
It's turtles all the way down.

That's the only episode of Night Vale I disliked... I'm not entirely sure why.

Re: Welcome to Night Vale
Night Vale is pretty great, I agree. I like how it is a well balanced story (given the genre) of two gay men and their community, without it being -about- them being gay, you know? I'd like to have more story behind old woman Josie (?) because her and her angels are pretty great.

Probably because it's a break from the usual format. We don't learn anything about Night Vale as a whole, and the story isn't really resolved. I just loved the writing.

You know, that Rapidfire episode where all the bell-ringing is mucked up by "Steve!" just got a whole lot more interesting in my head...
