Hay, they're having that free cards celebration thing on Sat. Is that an all day thing or does it start at a certain time? Can't find anything saying anything besides Sat.

I'm in love with Ashiok

Image

I don't think she's super powerful or anything but i love the flavor, I love that she's cheap, and I love that I doubt she'll be very expensive so I can actually put her in the Dimir deck I'm planning

It's not a set time, it's up to your LGS when they want to run it. You should check with them.

all these "screw your own colours" cards seem pretty funny until you realize that Dark Betrayal is the perfect Sideboard counterpart to Doomblade

ashiok is really good and its extremely big that her first ability is +2 instead of +1 . at 5 loyalty she is out range of warleaders helix and for a cheap T3 planeswalker thats huge.

I like it too. Starting at 3 with +2 rather than 4 and +1 means that without a concerted effort, she'll stay out of range too.

To be honest, I don't like her much, but that's a judgement call I suppose. I just don't see the synergy the same way I do other Planeswalkers in standard right now.

have you seen this guy, its bonkers. every bant hexproof player out there just had a joygasm.
a watchwolf that becomes ridiculous once you hit 5 mana.
Geist was good but he could be bonfired/mortar'd. you will need an answer to either exile him or reduce his toughness that does not target.

the one drawback with him is ppl will hold their removal spell until you pay the mana for monstrosity and then play the removal spell in response. timing is key with the monstrosity mechanic

Indeed... Got to wait for them to be tapped out for that.

Or, if you have enough mana, you can try to draw it out... See if enchanting him will draw out their removal, and then, if it does, make him Monstrous in response to their removal.

If you have the mana open at that point. He asks for a decent amount, since it's 5 mana to give him that. I'm not sure if he's actually going to be hugely better than Call of the Conclave honestly.

For the planeswalker, she seems... really good for mill decks. But that's really about it. She herself won't mill an opponent out most of the time. But she gets enough loyalty that it'll be hard to keep her gone.

Also, we're getting back Searing Spear in a new form.

Still seems strong. 2 mana 3/3 is a great option. Keeping up the 5 mana to Monstrous him seems like a lot, but if you're playing Selesnya there's a good chance you're keeping Advent of the Wurm up at around the 5 mana mark anyways. If they go for the removal, you pump. If they do nothing, you go for the Wurm.

*edit*

Kinda sad to see the Searing Spear alternate reprint but I suppose they decided it was too integral a part of the RWU control decks and red aggro/midrange decks. Seems weird that they didn't just reprint Searing Spear though. I mean, they JUST made Searing Spear a new card in M13, and now they're doing the exact same effect, sure, but why make ANOTHER entirely new spell from whole cloth?

Advent is 4 mana, not 5. And if you're in selesnya and are running tokens anyways, you're likely going to be running populate as well. That makes Call a better option for your deck in my opinion.

And if I had to guess, the reason is flavor.

Yes I know it's 4 mana but that doesn't mean it's not something you can keep open when you have 5 available. My point is if you have 5 untapped Selesnya mana you've got options.

On the subject of populate: very few of the GW creature decks I see at my FNM use populate. They mostly play off the back of Centaur Healer, Smiter, Advent, Courage, and Charm. I Don't know that I've seen populate in any of them

But most of the time, you'd rather just play Advent out turn 4. And even if they don't remove it and you do Advent, that doesn't mean they don't have removal in hand as well.

For populate, I've seen a few decks that use it during my FNMs. And even then, what's currently used and what will be used post-rotation are two totally different things. Populate might be better, or worse, after rotation. That's not something we can really call right now since we don't know everything about the new set.

So, since they won't be using any of the Greek Mythos tropes of the stuff Zeus gets up to, I'm now left wondering, would the demigods in Theros have a bit of the Nyx star thing going on for them as well?

All the gods should, yes. The star thing is part of the Creature Enchantment thing, and can be found even on lesser creatures, such as the Nymphs and Archons. So the Demigods definitely should have the Nyx star thing going for them.

The new duals are Scry lands, which let you scry 1 when you play them and enter tapped. I feel this is... eh. I'm not sure how good or bad they'll be. Better than gates for sure. But what really bothers me is that they're rare. It feels like they should be uncommon to me.

The star thing on the card borders is related to the Creature/Artifact/Etc Enchantment thing specifically, but I think headband might have been referring to the art?

In the art, where there would be a shadow, there is a starfield instead, which is Nyx. This in on all the Gods, their weapons, and the creatures/spells related to them (which also happen to be Enchantments).

Interesting. I can get behind that. If you, for instance, had two lands in your opening hand and one was a Scry land, you'd be able to feel more confident keeping it cuz you'd have a little more control over when you hit your third land.

Huh, all the lands are enemy colours and don't have basic land types. Well they are clearly overshadowed by the Ravnica lands, but once they rotate out, things could get more interesting (I'm a fan of making fixing hard).
