That is part of the joke, its a good solid card with lots of advantages but people always compare it to the other hydra which is better.

Well, it looks like someone just spoiled the whole set. Time to go digging for things that make my Gyre Sage deck suck less.

Aqueous Form seems NUTS to me. A one-drop aura that makes the equipped creature unblockable? AND lets your scry every time you attack? For one mana?

Seems good.

Also. Triton Tactics. Finally a one mana instant spell that untaps two creatures. my Elite Arcanist is GO. It's even in his colour.

It's time. To go. DEEP.

Also, I'm super happy because I finished off my playsets of shocklands, including my second playset of Temple Gardens. So much relief!

Midnight Pre-release, if I pull that colossus I will discard all building plans and force it. THE COLOSSAL CHALLENGE SHALL BE DONE.

Warrior's Lesson seems potentially insane (in limited at least) with Heroic. Trigger 2 Heroics, draw 2 cards, all for 1 green at instant speed? Of course that's definitely best-case thinking, but green has a few creatures that people just aren't going to block often like Centaur Battlemaster (which also has Heroic) or just the little 1/1 deathtouch guy. I think if you just get 2 of those 4 benefits, the card is very good (so just draw 2, or just get 2 heroic triggers, or draw 1 and get 1 heroic trigger), and 3 or 4 of them just becomes insane.

It's going to depend on how good Heroic actually ends up being, but any cheap ways to target your creatures and get some added benefit seem like they could be quite good.

While bears with downside is BAD, I really really like this card. I think it's funny.

I just won the most unfulfilling event in magic I have ever played.

9 games
G1 (W) opponent Mulled to 4 stuck on 2 land
G2 (L) Stuck on three forests.
G3 (W) Opponent mull to 4
__
G4 (L) Mul to 5 Stuck on two land
G5 (W) Opponent played 1 spell
G6 (W) Opponent Mul to 5 stuck on 2 land
__
G7 (W) Mutivault did 18 damage by turn 10 because I shocked the one creature opponent played and he doom bladed two of mine then pacified my other creature.
G8 (L) mull to 5 one lander, turn 5 draw second land

I say "ok this last game will be good it has to be"
Opponent says "yeah those were crap, I have been off land all night"

G9 (W) We both keep 7 cards Opponent plays 4 plains over 4 turns off second color only plays a pacifism.

WOO HOO! I get 16 phantom points and a QP

Still going ahead with my Simic Surprise Elite Arcanist combo deck but I've realized that I think I'm going to win plenty of games with that deck just using its backup plan:

PLAY HUGE FREAKING CREATURES

seriously.

Deadbridge Goliath: 5/5 for 4 (Scavenge)
Arbor Colossus: 6/6 for 5 (reach, Monstrous)
Mistcutter Hydra: X for GX (Pro blue, no counter, haste)
Nylea: 6/6 for 4 (God!)
Polukranos, World Eater 5/5 for 4 (Monstrous)

Just wanna get up to 4 and 5 mana and then keep slamming down threats. And then randomly generate infinite mana. MUWHAHAAA

*edit*

Also looking forward to slamming down a Prime Speaker for like a 6/6 and 6 cards too

I think my deck will be morphing into something similar with rotation. It was trying to combo Gyre Sage and Burst of Strength for lots of mana, and lots of counters with Increasing Savagery, but that's rotating out, and the parts are pretty fragile on their own.

Bought some cards off a friend. In the process of sorting them. Encountered Kentaro, the Smiling Cat.

Thought process: 2/1 for 2 with Bushido... Not bad. Legendary? Cool. I'll set him aside for possible Commander deck. What's this other ability? "You may pay X rather than pay the mana cost for Samurai spells you cast, where X is that spell's converted mana cost." Oh, sweet! Man, this is some of the best fixing ever! I'll make him my commander and then fill my deck with all Samurai of every color and then... Oh wait... Commander decks can only have their commander's color in them... So all the Samurai will be white and all I'll have is plains... That makes the ability worthless if he's the commander, since I won't need fixing... DANGIT!

You could always put him into your multi colored samurai deck with some tutors to go get him.

Not the same but commander is more about flavor and fun rather than about winning every game right?

wow i already liked Reaper of the wilds but from testing i can easily say this is one of the theros all stars. the tricky bit is like aetherling you never want to play it with just 4 mana open. you need the 6 to activate hexproof. great blocker. great attacker and the 5 toughness means not even overloaded mizzium mortars can kill it.

So what color is everyone going to be in the Theros pre-release? I'm personally torn. I'm a green player at heart. But... I like the white promo the best, and it seems to be the strongest. The blue one doesn't seem bad, and has pretty solid backup in the common and uncommon slots. So... I just don't know.

Not sure. Green is tempting. Black seems like it could be good if you were able to get a mono deck going with their promo.

Gonna wait for the LR set review to decide for sure tho (assuming it's out in time)

Given the spoilers, I don't think that mono-black is going to be much of an option unless you get a great pool. I don't like the green one at all though. I'm not a fan of animating land as a general rule of thumb. The red one doesn't seem great unless you can get a very good aggro pool, and even then... I'm not sure it's a great choice.

The white one is a solid body by itself. Serra Angel is pretty good in limited, and I think this is better, with an ability that just seems very good with it. The krakan can be pretty solid 'removal' when it turns into a 10/10. And I don't think there's more than 2 pieces of removal that isn't rare.
