;-; I'm sad now.

Basically I said that I totally agree with you, and I didn't mean to make it sound like marriage was no big decision at all, but that just when I think of it compared to having a baby, it's like choosing if I want to buy gum at the store. Not relatively, it's a huge decision. One I probably wont make for many years to come, and I'll be as financially responsible about it as I can be.

I don't know if they're legal in your country, but pre-nups, they're awesome.

My boyfriend is Canadian, I am American. O:

[So in this case marriage would actually be a huge deal, because of that.]

I don't think Pika should have a kid, she'll either turn it into a serial killer, or she'll form Team Adorable and hold the internet hostage to ransom for money or chicken.

It appears that the bag is spreading to other threads...

Also, doesn't marriage also carry lots of benefits as well? Like legal right to make decisions for the other in an emergency, special bank accounts etc. If for those alone I would consider marriage important.
(Of course my opinion on marriage is based on how much you can fleece it for XD)

There's certainly benefits to marriage that make it enticing even for couples that dislike the tradition and superstition of it. Granted, it does mean a lot more paperwork in the event of a breakup, but unless you go down like a flaming comet into rural Russia...

Aye, that it has. I met her last year but she left Ireland for a year. She invited me to a house warming party on Friday and I've seen her practically every day since.

Here in America, the actual benefits are small. As for "special checking accounts", a couple of two straight male friends who were roommates got a joint checking account. No marriage license needed there. You do get to act for that person in case of emergency, but that power can be signed over by contract (but it isn't always enforced if there isn't a marriage). You also get to inherit your spouse's property when that person dies, but again, this can be done with a will or a trust. The only real benefit (and also downfall) is your incomes and debts are basically joined during the marriage, but this can be avoided through a prenuptial agreement. Also, you don't have to get married to have rights over any children, you simply have to do a paternity action (which can be hard depending on when the parties did it). So, marriage, it's a social contract.
