The Bodypaint Problem
The Bodypaint Problem
Among all the options you could choose for a Halloween costume, some are far worse than others.

Oh gosh, that was hilarious. I really liked the title cards with the old-timey music. I can't wait to hear the story about writing this one...

Al Jolson... that was great. I love Beej's role as the "well-intentioned idiot." I feel like he's done that in other videos, but can't remember specific ones offhand.

I did indeed have to look up Al Jolson, not being American or American adjacent. Beej was great though.

An idea I have had for a possibly politically incorrect Halloween costume is to go as an Afghan.
Brilliant video.

That was great. Tight writing, short and to the point, and absolutely hilarious.
When the upkeep takes longer than the main phase, I know I've done my job well.
Re: The Bodypaint Problem
I really liked the video, but can you explain the decision to use a slight shaky-cam? Not sure I understand what that was supposed to add.

Re: The Bodypaint Problem
Sadly, I have gone to a fancy dress party as a black-and-white ministrel before. The theme was essentially "Offensive stereotypes", and my mum really likes playing dress-up, so... she essentially went all-out with her ideas, and I kind of just went along with it.
It wasn't exactly my finest moment. In fact, it was pretty close to my least fine moment.
That aside, this was a great video! I loved the "One explanation of cultural sensitivity later" cuts, they actually felt like very old-school LRR. In a good way. And Beej's "You made that up" was just perfect.
P.S. In the context of the joke, Al Jolson is exactly who you expect him to be.

I was actually half afraid there was going to be a 'Black Peter' reference in there (currently a very big discussion in The Netherlands)

I understood the stinger, but I dont exactly get it.
It doesnt seem like you could differentiate in costume form between "black face" we hate black people, and Al Jolson, even though there is a distinct historical difference.

This sketch plays out like a vaudeville routine.

I don't get what you're not getting.
Is it like how people couldn't differentiate between Beej's Claus von Stauffenberg costume and just dressing like a Nazi?

Been a while since I heard or read about Al Jolson, weird to see him brought up.

En pointe. I love the timing and speed in this sketch. It moves fast enough to get away with the absurd premise and thus becomes funny. I loved the old-timey music in particular, and the cultural references.
There isn't really a historical difference. Blackface wasn't just worn around the house as a way of letting people show show they hated black people. It's theatrical costuming. The problem with blackface is that anybody performing in blackface was both appropriating and exploiting Black culture without actually being black (which robs actual black artists of their work) and because it allows white people to perpetuate dehumanizing and racist stereotypes about black people (performers in blackface often acted stupid, inhuman, or clumsy). (Frederick Douglass wrote about it here: http://utc.iath.virginia.edu/minstrel/miar03at.html)

Re: The Bodypaint Problem
Hosk, the stinger was just made up on set as taking the misunderstanding the other way.
Like, Alex's character wanted to dress up as Jolson (generally the only blackface performer people know by name), but for whatever reason he didn't ACTUALLY use blackface.
Thereby making his costume (the one that should've been offensive) largely inoffensive.

Meh. Didn't think this one was ye best imo. Not that it was bad, just didn't really make me laugh.

Is it bad that I didn't have to look up Al Jolson?
Anyway, I thought this was a great sketch, although the slight shakey-cam was a little distracting. Was that due to not tripod-ing, or greenscreen problems? (I'm assuming the shop was a background plate since we never saw Graham and Beej in shot together)

It's too bad you had to green screen this one. It kind of took me out of the video a bit. On the other hand, it was well written and the delivery was great. I laughed pretty hard.

Re: The Bodypaint Problem
Yeah, sucks that no cool shop owners in Victoria came through for them. The green screen wasn't bad, though, I didn't notice it until my third watch-through.
I imagine the slight movement was to distract the viewer from the entirely static image.

I noticed the green screen halfway through but I didn't mind it at all, I was already invested in the sketch.
Re: The Bodypaint Problem
The movement is interesting... we shot it handheld with tracking marks, which should've looked totally fine. But for some reason some shots ended up more shaky that you'd expect.

Re: The Bodypaint Problem
Hmmm, I'm curious, Beej says he's worn the gloves before, and only encountered one problem. What might that have been?

Thanks for the costume ideas, Beej
Loved this one. I guess I wasn't paying attention as closely as others as I didn't notice the green screen nor the shaky movement.
I hope you guys continue to do these sketches every once in a while even after you're done here.
