The Limited thread
Re: The Limited thread
Query, has anyone ever seen Scholar of Atheros used for value? I've played against some decks using it but the ability has never fired. I mean, it's a solid blocker on its own, but I'm curious if there's actually value there.
When the upkeep takes longer than the main phase, I know I've done my job well.

Re: The Limited thread
Yeah, early in the set I drafted it in a very defensive, mostly black deck. Akroan Horse provided a lot of blockers, killed everything I couldn't block, and EoT, if I had mana, use the Scholar. 3-0 that draft.
But I don't know if it would still work, as there seems to be more R/W heroic decks, which are a bit too quick.

Yeah, speaking of I just got beaten by one of those in a MTGO swiss. Three games in a row of turn 1 Akroan Crusader and it just got more aggro from there. WELP.

Re: The Limited thread
I used it primarily for its body as a blocker, but I was able to drain a couple of life when I had no other plays that turn (which happens when a lot of your game plan is neutralizing their attacks for several turns in a row).

Duckay is right on, its a big butt that MIGHT have a upside, but mostly it just helps you delay a little.

GABALAHAHAREARARARA!
I was playing in a 2 for tuesday event. in round three my opponent was away for 9 minutes 48 seconds before starting play. I won game one, they won game two. Game three, I had them to one life, I had a megantic sliver, two shocks, a shives embrace and two chandras outrages left in my last 11 cards. I was at 8 life and we each had 5 ground creatures, I had two land in hand they had nothing in hand. I top decked 4 land, my opponent top decked two shocks and a land and a Volcanic Geyser. 4 seconds left on the clock... SON OF A WARRAHRNBGARRRGARGRBRBAR!

Re: The Limited thread
I figured I'd enter in the Fowl Play sealed event.
For those who missed it, it was a 24-hour opportunity to build a sealed deck with the most bird-heavy sets in the game, all for the Thanksgiving spirit.
And whaddaya know, I actually got a bird deck together. Have a look:
The deck was a blast to play, with lots of birds, wizards and even a few merfolk. Mostly I won the entire draft, my hardest match being a R/G deck in the second round who had a lot of big, big creatures and a reach guy that could actually pick off flying creatures. Nevertheless, my deck prevailed and I now have enough material to draft Tempest Block (in addition to receiving a few other fun prizes)

Re: The Limited thread
So Tempest Block has been running this week and I really wasn't running very well to start, luckily I had a few good opens (an Oath of Druids, some Rolling Thunders and Lotus Petals, and even got passed an Ancient Tomb). Then tonight I finally got a 3-0 deck together, this blue/red one built mostly on some pingers and looters, some good walls and a couple removal spells, and a few evasive guys to punch through. I mostly breezed through the first couple rounds but then needed a well-timed Shock off the top and then a nail-biter of a game 3 to win the last match.
Re: The Limited thread
I did one too, got a nice WU deck together, splashing black for Plaguebearer.
Got an easy win first match, second match however I was up to some guy called OlleR (anyone know if that could actually be pro player Olle Råde? Could be just a coincidence of course).
I really had a blast with this draft. I hope they come back if I have some more financial freedom.

Re: The Limited thread
Fun addendum:
I actually came within an inch of winning my second match.
I had a few creatures on the table and two Angelic Blessing in hand. I had exactly the right amount of power on the table.... except that one of the creatures I needed to target was Crystalline Sliver (which can't be targeted).
That led to me having to block to stall for another turn and getting short on damage the following turn.
One thing I really like about the format though is all the crazy interactions. There are so many crazy combos in the format. I saw one guy with a spike deck (he had at least six different ones), and I watched a draft online where someone did a Humility/Shifting Wall combo (the counters make the wall the biggest creature on the battlefield usually).

Re: The Limited thread
So the Flashback Draft for this week is... Modern Masters. As per when it first hit, the drafts are quite a bit more expensive than a normal draft (4 tix and product or 25 tix). I probably won't do more than a couple due to the cost, but it is a really fun format and if they go as well as this first did I might do more.
I was unsure where this deck was going early but settled into a blue-based affinity deck with some light red and white. Highlight was game 3 of match 2, on the play I went as follows... Turn 1 Island and pass, Turn 2 Island and Sculptor and Pass, and then Turn 3 Island and Sculptor and Esperzoa and Frogmite and Myr Retriever and Myr Retriever. I won on turn 5 with back to back topdecks of Mountain and Shrapnel Blast. And then Sword won both games of the finals because it's such a fair card Turns out it's kind of easy to win a draft with a broken mechanic and a broken card and a bunch of good luck.

Re: The Limited thread
So we're back to Rise of the Eldrazi for this week's Flashback Format, which is both good (it's quite a fun and interesting format) and bad (there's very little value in the cards). I did a few drafts just for the fun factor, but now I'm back to M14 (the best current value among the available draft formats) until Mercadian Masques shows up next week, now there's a set with some value in it. Anyway, this ended up being the best deck I drafted from Rise, not really a standard archetype but it did feature some good removal and a few bombs. It also led to one of the craziest games I've played in awhile, my opponent got up to 70 life while I was sitting on exactly 1 but I was able to somehow crawl back and win thanks to the incredibly powerful ability of Dawnglare Invoker.

Things my opponents learned today during a Cube draft: If you steal one of my creatures with control magic, do not equip it with the sword of body and mind.

Just tell him the trick to drawing good cards is to put good cards in your deck.Lord Hosk wrote:"God you got so lucky with your draws, you wouldnt be winning if you didnt luck into good cards."
Speaking of Sword of Body and Mind, if you only have 1 creature, and you have a sword and Lightning Greaves, don't do what I did and equip the greaves first...

It does. Shroud prevents all targeting (unlike hexproof, which only prevents opponent's targeting), and equip targets.

I thought Shroud only prevented targeting by spells, or abilities.
Equipment isn't a spell or ability.
