It's "running" but in a testing way, and not running on the normal public settings. If I have time after church tonight, I might be able to get it worked out to minimize lag.

I think mojang was indirectly affected by the heartblead bug or something...

Heartbleed is why they're dropping support of the old launcher, but I haven't heard of any effects to Minecraft beyond that (if their website was vulnerable though, then take the usual precautions).

Minecraft used OpenSSL for account verification. Anything using OpenSSL is vulnerable to Heartbleed. Heartbleed leaves no traces that information was stolen, so we have no idea what has been compromised. Change passwords to basically anything you have to log into that used it (like two-thirds of the internet uses OpenSSL).

Ok, still a rather large portion. I said two-thirds because the Minecraft launcher told me that.

Where do you get that number? Most servers run apache or nginx or something similar, would would mean that if they use SSL, they're probably using OpenSSL.

Not saying you're wrong, just like sources cause I love knowledge. I've been out of the web world for a while now. I think most articles are sourcing this on market share for Apache and nginx, and one could safely assume they're running OpenSSL as well.

This whole issue is kind of a good thing for me. I may actually be able to get some people to change their passwords now, and even switch to a proper password manager.

I think it is 17% of web servers that are (or were) running a vulnerable version of OpenSSL.

I dunno the reliability of the statistic, but wikimedia reported that "estimated percentage of web servers on the internet" using OpenSSL 1.0.1-1.0.1f (or 1.0.2beta).

Mind you, I imagine the absolute quantity of servers using vulnerable versions of OpenSSL is going to DECREASE BY THE MINUTE (that 17% number is twelve hours old) as people either upgrade their OpenSSL to a version with a 'patched Heartbeat'¹, or switch to other solutions. ;)

But let's be honest here EVEN SEVENTEEN PERCENT OF THE WORLD WIDE WEB IS STILL A LOT OF SERVERS

Yeah, there's people running around behind me double-checking any servers that might be vulnerable and getting them up to date. At least one high-priority box I know about was using a version of OpenSSL that pre-dates the Heartbleed exploit, and thus is (technically) safe. The real pain comes from the fact that we're in the middle of onboarding several large clients, so we're not completely sure of which boxes are running what yet.

On the other hand, Semantic Endpoint Protection uses a vulnerable version of OpenSSL, with no ETA on a patch as of yet. Good ol' Norton.

So, I'm building the Teleport building and I ran into a problem regarding the complex interactions between command blocks, comparators, and chunks loading and unloading. I want to see what everyone's thoughts are before I move forward on this.

We have two options moving forward: minimum amount to use or more wiring.

1. Minimum amount to use

This would be a minimum amount of money needed to use the teleporter. This would not be how much you're charged for the teleport though. The minimum amount of money would be the cost of the maximum teleport charge + the cost of your current teleport choice.
For example, say the most expensive teleport costs 500 Dongs, but you're using one that only costs 50 Dongs. That means you'd need to have 550 Dongs to use the teleporter, even if you're only being charged 50 Dongs to do it. (If you're using the most expensive one, it'd end up being double the cost.)

Pro:
Smaller wiring, which allows for about 14 teleporters.
Con:
At current projected prices, people with under about 2000 Dongs may not be able to teleport.

2. More wiring

I could wire it up so the price to pay is the price you need to use it, no more, no less. However it'll take more room and allow for less teleport options in the same space.

Pro:
Less money involved, and you only need what you have to pay.
Con:
More complex wiring would allow for only about 6 teleporters, if that.

So, what does everyone think? I'm personally leaning towards Option 1, but I'd like to know what your thoughts on the matter are. I'll give this until about Monday or so before deciding.

I, too, prefer the former option - 2000 dong or so isn't THAT hard to acquire; we've got mob grinders, and besides you gain xp from almost anything productive nowadays. :)

If it makes the teleport system easier to implement and more flexible in coverage, it's worth the 'overhead'.

Here's a meta-justification: think of it as needing a 'deposit' on hand above the teleport charge itself, but one that you are refunded as soon as the teleport is complete...so what if the teleport is instantaneous? ;)

can you make it to use levels/xp instead of money? if the teleporting works both ways a player might not have enough money but enough equivalent xp.

There is an xp converter less than 50 blocks away from the teleport building Costia.

I think the first option should be fine.

1-way teleports currently. If I make more elsewhere, I'll install a new converter.

Just a note... the first one also has the CON of head aches for you as you'll have to explain it over and over again to every noob.

For the second one... you could simplify the rail network into having regional hubs and have the teleport go to those. Then you wouldn't need as many teleports and people wouldn't constantly be confused about how much money they needed.

Which one do you think will cause you less grief, the one that means you'll have to deal with people more or the one that has you wiring a complicated thing?

Luckily, he DOES have mods for explaining that sort of thing.
