Gotta go with the original. 1C for "find anything and put it in your hand" is hard to beat. You can find a win condition, you can find a land, you can find a card you've been bluffing for six turns. It's just sad that it's not instant speed.

The answer is clearly Booster Tutor.

I think Demonic "1B get your best card" is just a windmill slam.

I think it's between Demonic, Stoneforge and Tinker. Stoneforge provides a body and has a relevant second ability. Tinker not only searches for an artifact, it puts it into play. Blightsteel Colossus for CMC 3 and 2 cards? If the Artifact you sac is a Mox, you can put that thing into play turn 2...

Tinker takes it I think. There's a reason that thing is banned, where bannable and restricted everywhere else.

Tinker is by far the best card there, but Tinker isn't a simple tutor. Tinker puts the card into play.

As far as a straight Tutor, Demonic, easily.

I would love to choose Tinker - sac a piddly Myr token, drop a Colossus of Akros - but I gotta go with the original. There's a reason why it hasn't been printed past Revised.

@Wicked, You Know, Sacrificing an Artifact Land (Seat of the Synod) for Blightsteel Colossus
Works better.

No Wargate? :)

Best tutor is kind of format-dependent.
In Commander, if it searches more than one card, it's generally a much more powerful tutor. Win Condition get.
Examples:
  • Diabolic Revelation
  • Plea for Guidance
  • Tooth and Nail
  • Defense of the Heart
  • Infernal Tutor

There's a reason why it hasn't been printed past Revised.

It's been reprinted in Divine vs. Demonic, the duel deck that is itself being reprinted this year as part of Duel Decks Anthology.

If they're willing to reprint that again it might even be in the monoblack Commander 2014 deck.
I sure enjoy watching LRR!

I wouldn't want to meet them though. I'm very allergic to cats and fun.

I'm also for Conflux. Granted, it's 3WUBRG, but grabbing 5 potential cards for CMC is pretty nice. It's really cornercase, and probably insta-countered if anyone's smart, but if you can get it to resolve, and have the ability to get all 5 cards, nothing feels better.

Y'know, after a truly silly commander game today, I'm quite partial to Planar Portal. It got out of hand pretty fast.

I used to use Ring of Three Wishes, since I could abuse Contagion Engine to get counters on it, but it's too hard to get that combo going, plus I think eventually, it's more mana-intensive than just Planar Portal, so I switched.

I'm conflicted. I want to say Gamble really badly, but the possibility of discarding what you searched for is just too much. I think I have to go for Johnny, Combo Player.

There is Beseech the Queen. Not as cheap as Demonic, but you get the colorless hybrid and the land requirement isn't horrible. If you are hunting a bomb, you probably have the lands for it ready to go anyway.

Never heard of that card before. Seems interesting, and rarely are you going to hunt for something that's out of your cost range, anyway.

My brain says Demonic Tutor, kind of hard to top that.

However my heart says Mystical Teachings, I mean it's 2 tutors in 1! Plus, there's few things as sweet as the old Teachings for Teachings.

What about Maralen of the Mornsong? YOU get a tutor and YOU get a tutor! EVERYONE GETS A TUTOR!

Seriously, though. It's Demonic Tutor.

I'm a little bit surprised that Enlightened Tutor didn't show up in this thread yet. But apart from that, I think it is impossible to choose which tutor is the best. It all depends on the deck, format and metagame. Every tutor mentioned so far has it's upsides and drawbacks. While many people say that Demonic Tutor is clearly the best one, I'm not that sure. A strong argument can be made for the instant speed, one mana tutors even though they put the searched card on the top of your library, since with any kind of instant draw source they can provide you with any card you want at instant speed.

My Personal Favorite is Tinker, but the different situations apply to different Archetypes and Formats. I mean, One does NOT run Demonic tutor in a Mono-Blue, Nor do they Run Mystical Tutor or Tinker in a Mono-Black.

Which is why you play Gamble in an Arrogant/Reckless Wurm madness deck, alongside Fauna Shaman.
