Classics are meant to be messed with. That's why they're classics.
I'm also reminded of the Kids in the Hall sketch with the Worst Straight Man Ever. "Oh, I see what your problem is! Look, you're confused by their names, because they all sound like questions."

To adapt something, that i read on a "Munchkin" card:
This is the oldest [joke] in the book. But it works! That is why it is in the book.
"The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth."

Oddly, i don't find the original funny at all. Your version, however, is hillarious.

Not an excuse, it's been translated into well over a dozen different languages, and is one of the best-known comedic dialogues in the world.

Many moons ago, when I was very, very young, I heard the original Abbot & Costello Who's on First and just didn't get it ... because I was in the same mindset as Costello.
It wasn't until a few years later when I was older that I finally got it, which made it just that much funnier to me.
I must say, LRR's post is very well done IMHO. It certainly "clears things up" even with the visual, and that is what makes yours so brilliant. LOL.
BRAVO! \o/
EDIT - this is my favorite version of it:
