Re: Youtube Buys Twitch
The problem is that for none arse holey streamers they are put in a dilemma.
Be normal but lose archiving on the Twitch servers. They have to archive themselves.
Strip all music from their streams and be allowed to archieve. Or find a source of royalty free music and be prepared for hypersensitive copyright claims.
I guess at least my dream of streaming as I do something gaming related & mundane as I play my own music (as I'd do anyway), isn't affected unless I somehow want to archive me building stuff in RCT3.

0/1.Even if it turns out to be true, I wouldn't go jumping to any conclusions just yet on how this will affect Twitch.
Jumping? I'm just cobbling together a syllogism here:
1. YouTube & Google Videos are competing platforms for a subform of media conveyance.
2. Google buys YouTube.
3. YouTube becomes a playground for trolls to cry wolf about Copyright infringement which, corporate giant Google has to take seriously, thanks to the state of affairs created by corporate-manipulated legislatures.
A. Google's YouTube & Twitch Interactive's Twitch.tv are competing platforms for a different subform of media conveyance.
B. Google buys Twitch Interactive.
C. ???
So is it COMPLETELY fallacious to extrapolate "C"?
I'm bumping this thread so I can be a smug asshole and correct this score.

Re: Youtube Buys Twitch
You know, where I work, during the summers, I sometimes enter the men's room on one side of the building and the tile would always be slick with water. I told my boss at one point a while back, "The morning cleaners are mopping too late in the day. If it's humid or you don't put on the AC early enough, it'll still be wet when I come in, and a customer could fall."
She said, "No, they're not mopping that late. It must be the humidity or something."
A few weeks later, I saw one of the morning cleaners pushing a wheeled bucket and mop away from a different room. The floor was wet (though the tile in this place doesn't get AS slick, but there's no way it would dry before we opened if you mopped it when I got there.)
I went to her and said, "We talked about the wet floors in the bathroom and you said they weren't mopping that late in the morning? Well, I just saw one of them doing it."
She cut me off to say she didn't have time to deal with it right then, but I persisted and said something to the order of. "I'm just letting you know so you know the truth. This is not about me being right. It's about making sure you know what's true so you can make the proper decisions based on those facts."
It was one of a few moments that helped illustrate my good relationship with my boss.

So Amazon now owns Twitch. Didn't see that coming.

I have this dream where Amazon and Google get into a massive tech-giant conflict that ultimately escalates to full-scale digital corporate warfare. This acquisition brings us one step closer to that possibility, and therefore I love it.

In the immortal words of Robert Frost:
"Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But holy shit Shadowrun would be pretty kickass too."

Shadowrun or the Armored Core series...

Shadowrun may be a bit further off but, if we really try, we might get Syndicate.

What remake?
Btw, I feel a little bit smug about the whole not-youtube-thing

Unless you're joking by blanking the terrible game from two years ago, the original came out in the 90s.

Sooo,
am I the only one who wishes for another way to contribute to LRR other than Twitch Subs?
I really don't like to give money to amazon...

I don't really understand that position. Don't get me wrong, you're more than entitled to your opinion, and I think voting with your dollars is a good way of taking a stand when it comes to corporations. But in this case, subbing to LRR via Twitch is only vaguely related to Amazon. Sure, they own Twitch now, but they're leaving them alone business-wise. Or I guess to look at things from another perspective, Netflix's entire backend runs on Amazon's servers. Does that mean you don't use Netflix either?
(Full disclosure, I don't use Netflix despite not having any problem with Amazon.)

I don't know what has the best margins for LRR, but they do have a variety of merchandise available.

PA knocked this one clear out of the park. Though personally I see very few ways this could go badly and far more things that might be awesome. We'll see.
Re: Youtube Buys Twitch
Why exactly will Amazon "fuck up" twitch?
Re: Youtube Buys Twitch
It's mostly a joke.
Unless they fundamentally change some policies or go overboard with targeted advertising based on your Amazon history (though that might arguably be better than the current Twitch ads) there just isn't too much room for this to go badly.
There is also the potential issue of switching CDNs. To the best of my knowledge, Twitch currently uses its own tech for distribution. I think it's safe to assume that with the buyout, Amazon will want to migrate the whole thing to CloudFront. This may be a good thing (CloudFront is quite a bit bigger than Twitch) or it may turn out to suck, there's honestly no way of knowing for now.
BTW, Amazon owns some other things that are generally pretty well regarded: IMDB.com, Alexa (the website stat tracking service), DPReview.com and Audible.com.
