Re: Doctor Who
I enjoyed it.
I excused the deus thingy, because the method of restoring the Doctor was great. It's a half deus thingy.
Clara lies mucho, is kinda sad. It certainly feels like she's going to pay for it.
I liked the monster a lot. Sad that there is no way it could potentially return. Unless it's an episode with:
Angels
Silence
Vaashtenada
So, don't blink, don't look away, avoid shadows and stay away from all flat surfaces

Re: Doctor Who
Great episode indeed. Flatland Attacks!
I wouldn't say it was dues ex at all seeing as they made clear pretty early he just needed the dimensional power.
Love the effect work. Not just the perspective tricks, but using deliberately badly rigged human models was a stroke of genius.

I loved it. IMO, it's up there with Listen.

Re: Doctor Who
The bad human models were enhanced by being bad. If they were perfect, they'd be less impactful.
I really liked the scene with the hand. You saw something move in the background, and it felt like it took a while before anything happened. And then it happened. Well executed
It made me murmur outloud: "muh mmuh muuh beh.. muh"

I think I actually prefer this episode to listen.

Yeah, quite good; also 'good' is
That of course leads me to
And the 'Tardis Data Core' (fan-wiki) categorizes this as a 'doctor-lite' episode (for scheduling reasons), which still turned out quite well...but I rather glaringly noticed that Capaldi had a haircut during production.
...and as much as I hate to finish with a complaint (which might be more about myself than the show), but the Doctor's Epic Climax Speech - as he concluded it, the music rose, and then the sound effects...all of it conspired to drown out his dialogue; I needed to replay it several times just to get a hint of what he decided to dub these creatures, and needed that aforementioned wiki to confirm it. That said, I'm not sure if it was actually bad sound mixing, or just my Auditory Processing Disorder - did anyone else find the Doctor's dialogue kinda drowned out there?
ADDENDUM: Ooh! Ooh! I get to finish with a GOOD note: "2Dis"!

the 'moral' of this episode:
"Why can't you say it? I was the Doctor, and I was good."
"You were an exceptional Doctor, Clara!"
"Thank you."
"...goodness had NOTHING to do with it."
Ohhhhhhh, the depths of meaning we can plumb with THAT!
What does it say about how the Doctor feels about 'his role' ? (you know "The Man That Stops The Monsters")

Re: Doctor Who
I did find that scene a tad loud. I generally only half pay attention to the Doctor's speeches anyways.

Re: Doctor Who
Yeah, zyxst volunteered to watch the scene and listen to it herself (with no foreknowledge or coaching), and she came up with "Bonemash"
But seriously, what is going on with the laxness of sound mix people nowadays? You never used to get this sort of thing in decades gone by in movies or TV shows (and I'm not suffering from 'nostalgia filters' or falling prey to my acknowledged APD - I just spent the last few hours watching an assortment of old TV show episodes - classic Dr.Who, Minder, Starsky & Hutch, etc. - and not once in five different episodes did I miss ANY dialogue)
ANYWAYS, a good episode, and despite some imaginative hope on my part for a more peaceful co-existence with The Boneless in the future (maybe this lot were just one faction of race that consist of myriad different groups with differing agendas and ethics? You know, like us ;^) ), it was a nice introduction of a new villain.

Re: Doctor Who
So at some point in the future, I can imagine an episode where the Weeping Angels make a reappearance, and there's a moment when all seems lost - and then, nothing. The Angels are stone, not moving even when unobserved. Their intended victim slowly moves closer, eventually clearly blinking, yet nothing changes. Confused, they go to leave.
Then a painting that had been in the background all along peels itself off the wall.

Re: Doctor Who
I was not a big fan of this episode. :L
It was pretty interesting until those last ten minutes. Kind of the opposite of Kill The Moon.

Re: Doctor Who
It was ok.
Daft.
But not awful. Suspect physics.
Anything would have been overshadowed by the finale next-time trailer.
Think of it as the sacrificial lamb.

Re: Doctor Who
A forgettable but not bad episode. Interesting bits of character development at least. Confused as hell by the trailer for the finale opener.

Re: Doctor Who
This is the first part of the finale.
Therefore, if you haven't seen it yet, expect huge spoilers.
Ok. I don't get why Missy thinks the Doctor is her boyfriend. I was kinda unaware of any pre-existing sexual tension the character had with the Doctor. I like how I warned of huge spoilers, and yet kept this vague. I need to see part 2 to know how good this episode is. The first part went by so fast.

Er... spoilers for the most recent episode.
It didn't read as genuine sexual tension to me. It read as sociopathic manipulation. Which fits.

Not talking about the kissing. Talking about when Missy refers to the Doctor as her boyfriend.

Re: Doctor Who
Fantastic episode, looking forward to part 2.
Massive spoilers: Sociopathic manipulation sounds about right.
Anyway, The Master was always one of my favourite villains, and I'm so happy that he(Or she now) is back. One thing I'm curious about, though, is how? Is the Time War no longer(Or perhaps never was) locked? Did she come back from Gallifrey in the future? Hope we find out soon!
The Cybermen thing was clever(Loved the Invasion callback), and the Danny thing is interesting.

Re: Doctor Who
So far, this episode is just adding to my theory that this entire series was written as one big '**** you' to various complaints that had been levelled at the series, and specifically Capaldi, before it started.
"Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not it after all."
