The Besiege Carnage-Creating Contraption Consortium

Given Alex's gratuitous attention towards Besiege lately, there's no doubt that some of us have also been taken by the amount of gameplay you can get out of it and the experiences you get just from different creative creations.

And you know what's just as great? it's only $7 USD. Haven't bought it yet? How have you not bought it yet? Trust me, you'll get that seven dollar's worth of entrainment within ten minutes. In fact, why not take a moment and go to the link above and buy it! (Mac/Linux users: As of 2/17, only the Humble Store carry Mac and Linux-compatible versions of Besiege.)

And now for that creations part... Got one you want to share? Need insight on how that one mechanism on your murder machine can work? Feel free to discuss and display your latest mechanical horrors of war here!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't really done anything too non-standard yet, maybe except for my latest creation - The Abomination:

It can get you through all the current maps without modification and handles well once you master the controls. A few drawbacks is that the bomb likes to roll around and ends up getting stuck between the plows when going backward (fixable by pressing R to push the bomb back in), which can be made much worse when you've got the flamethrowers going. Being a projectile firing machine, you also have to wait for the bomb to settle before launching, otherwise you'll have to rely on the flaming shrapnel to do the job. Using this against archers is somewhat of a challenge, as a single arrow is all it takes to blow you apart.

Oh, and no sawblades. Yeah, they're fun, but there's not really anywhere to put them that works effectively on this machine.

The biggest drawback though... - Click to Expand

Yeah, it barely doesn't fit in the box, so you'll have to go through the missions in free build mode. (There is a "siege-legal" version that removes the vertical blades however.) Here's hoping a rotation widget replaces the current method soon to rectify that.

Try it out if you want (Right-click and Save As, otherwise you'll get text):

Here's the "siege-legal" version if you want to try progressing through the maps without using Free Build:

They go into Steam/steamapps/common/Besiege/Besiege_Data/SavedMachines in order to use them.

Controls:

Movement
Q - Right Wheels forward
Z - Right Wheels backward
E - Left Wheels forward
C - Left Wheels backward

Weapons
F - Fire slingshot
(K - trigger return springs)
1 - Fire left cannons
2 - Fire right cannons
J - Deploy anti-personnel trap
Y - Toggle front flamethrowers
T - Toggle trap flamethrowers

Miscellaneous
Left - Lower grabber
Right - Raise grabber
G - Extend grabber
R - Raise plows/release grabber
H - Activate height adjustment pistons

A few tips:
  • If your target is up on a hill, don't forget you can use the height pistons to adjust the arc of the bomb or cannons. You can also use the same pistons to "jump" your front wheels onto a slightly higher elevation. (Or to show off in front of the tavern wenches and/or latrine cleaners.)
  • The grabber isn't just for grabbing mission-specific items, but can also be used to reload the slingshot, hence the two bombs on the side.
  • Choose what weapons you use in situations carefully. Remember that bombs are currently the only weapon that can take out stone walls, and that cannons have a far firing arc and roll on the ground.

OK, that is pretty damn impressive

For myself, I thought I'd challenge myself and see if I could get through the entire game without using powered wheels. Only propellors and trebuchets. Am being slowly successful so far and it's certainly an interesting challenge, although steering is rather tricky. As for insane contraptions, I can only offer this
"Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not Image it after all."

I've managed to make a half-decent, if horribly inefficient, trebuchet: http://gfycat.com/UnsungFrayedElkhound
I have plans for a far superior one, however.

There's a somewhat-functional MLRS I made: http://i.imgur.com/uxupv7V.jpg

I also have a decent boulder-throwing ballista, and a tank with traversing turret that I used for most of the campaign. I don't have any pictures of those handy though.

Will the superior one fire smaller trebuckets?

Don't be silly.

It will fire catapults.

Which will in turn fire ballistae.
