I know what you mean, they even took down the original "Never gonna give you up" video for the day so that people would have to think up something more original. To be honest, I read this on reddit a few weeks ago

Case in point:

Toshiba toner-recycling Multi-Function Printer

At first glance I figured it was an April Fool's joke...but it actually sounds useful - remove the toner and then allow the paper for those 'disposable' memos, email hard-copies and the like to be reused...

My favourite website pranks are the ones like Not Always Right, where all the top customer stories are anecdotes about working retail during the zombie invasion. Slightly more obnoxious is FML, where all the posts have become badly misspelled or had chat speak inserted, because now the comments are full of people complaining.

Hmm, so the RD30 Paper Reusing Device is STILL on Toshiba's website, with an unchanged description this far from the 1st - seems legit.

(it doesn't so much remove the toner from the paper to allow you to reuse/recycle your 'used up' memos & hard-copies, it "de-colorizes" the special toner you've printed with with high heat...I presume in a similar (but reverse) way as thermal paper 'burns' in color from application of high heat - you know those glossy cash register receipts you get? try putting one somewhere hot and watch it go all dark :)

Their choice of words made me feel it was a little too 'sci-fi made-up'...but apparently that's just sloppy marketeers instead of a deliberate April Fool's jest. Oh well, it sounds a great tool that would ACTUALLY help reduce paper waste (less docs needing to be shredded and then sent to a recycling facility - just erase them and print over them again something like four more times!

So... I'm not sure where else to put this, since I don't see a "Thread for Prayer" or "Thread for Worry" or anything, and I'm not sure if those should even be threads to start...

But anyway, my mom is having her knee replaced today. While we don't expect any issues, I ask for prayer that the surgeons to have the skill to replace her knee, and that she makes a speedy and full recovery. She's 58 years old, and she had zero cartilage in her knee, partially due to her job as a nurse requiring her to walk 5 miles a night, 3 to 5 nights a week. Bone was scraping against bone, causing her pain.

On the plus side, I'll have to be her driver for a while, which will help me get the 60 hours of driving in that I need to take my road test for my driver's license. This is the 5th time I've had my learner's permit, due to the fact that my parents were paranoid that I'd crash their cars. This knee issue is kind of forcing their hand, though, and I think it's for the better. I don't like driving, but in a city with very poor public transportation, I know I need to.

Prayer wouldn't be needed, the operation will go fine. If the surgeons didn't have the skill they wouldn't be in the position to do the operation. Trust me, I know.
Hopefully her recovery time will be quick and easy.

I dunno. Brian Moore (ex-England international rugby player) graduated in law from Nottingham University, alongside a friend of his who is now the head of a major UK law firm. This man is the same one who fell asleep in one of his final exams and once made up a precedent for a piece of coursework that had his professors feverishly hunting the library of case notes for a week.

So, a gaming clan I'd been a 'hanger on' with for ages is pretty much mothballed - there was a fair while where I was the only person actively posting in the forums celebrating birthdays and starting 'related news' threads...and then after a heartening resurgence on their 10th anniversary (they're only a little older than LRR) things died down even more as the next big thing we were hoping for in our sub-niche of gaming didn't pan out...

...I got an email from the server admin about mothballing the site and parking the domains based on donations.

*sigh*

Oh, well; sleep well my friends, and may me again meet when a GOOD game in our genre gets made...

I learned an interesting idea today, that sounds ridiculous at first glance, but is very deep and somewhat mind-blowing when you really think about it. The preacher started off the sermon with a quote from a book. I forget the book and the author, but the quote was this: "When you become a student of history, the first lesson you must learn is that no one lived in the past and nothing happened in the past."

Now, at first glance, that's preposterous. Of course people lived in the past and stuff was done in the past. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here today.

But here's the key: when those people were alive and doing things, it was not "the past." It was "now." Everyone who lives and does things does them "now." At some point, the things we do and the lives we live will be "the past" to someone. But we're here, alive, and we're doing things "now."

It kind of hammers into your mind the sense of immediacy of things, not only in history, but actually happening today. Genghis Khan, Gandi, Cleopatra, Abraham Lincoln, and anyone else you would care to name. When did they live? They lived "now." They took action and did things "now."

That kind of blew my mind a bit when I thought about that.

Easiest way is to use this web client: https://kiwiirc.com/client
Click on the small "Server and network" link near the bottom, and put in "irc.desertbus.org" as the server. In the channel field, enter "#desertbus". Put in the nick you want, leave the other fields as the defaults, and click on Start.

Hey, have you guys seen Louis Theroux's new series on the BBC? He's always managed to be compassionate and compelling, even in material that would stray into sensationalism in most other people's hands, his latest series is no exception.

I wonder: has the amount of money generated from WW2 media surpassed that of the money spent of the war, reparation and rebuilding?

I doubt it. In 1945 dollars, the Second World War cost trillions which would be tens or a hundred trillion in todays dollars.

As with the question of the combined length of movies about WWII, it's difficult to imagine the absolute scale of the war - modern society simply has no basis of comparison.

On the other hand, it can be cheaper to send a spacecraft to Mars than to make a film set there.

So as of next wednesday I'll have wifi at my new place! Also, curtains and other essentials.
I feel so pressured because I'm studying like crazy, and next week it'll be more studying.
But I'll also have to move stuff out from my parent's house to my new place.
