MTGO Custom Cube

Postby Omnicrat » 15 Apr 2015, 10:12

As those of you involved with the fan draft may or may not know, for the past few weeks I've been collecting cards to come up with a custom cube that we can play on MTGO, and I have my proof of concept cube ready. The ballance on it is probably off, but the point is to see how best to organize/play one of these. We can work on better cubes/custom formats later.

So, here is the plan. I'll orchestrate the first one (though I would like to play in them at some point :P), post below if you are interested in playing. Once we have 8 players we "fire." I use some random number generator or similar to randomly arrange 24 16 card packs from the pool.

Now, there are two ways we can do this part. Either we pass the packs around MTGO manually, taking picks until all the cards are gone, or I chat/text/email/PM each player their packs, they respond with the card they want to take, and I move the pack along minus cards picked so far to the next player until all cards are picked.

Once everyone has their deck (if we build them without using MTGO I will trade you the cards after the draft portion) the play bracket will be posted, and we go through one swiss of it. So, who's interested?

Note: I am still looking for any and all card donations, they just won't go in this specific version of the fan cube.

I do wish MtGO had an easier way of doing this, but I'd be quite interested in trying out a fan cube.

P.S. If you have any cards you need from M15 and up (I haven't been on MtGO long), I'd be willing to give them up. It's not like I'm getting into Constructed anytime soon. :P

I've got more cards for the Cube if you want them. Also, I'm totally up for this.

I think the messaging variant is better than passing the actual cards, as there's less opportunity for either deliberate cheating (not that I expect that of this crowd, but you never know), or just plain mistakes.

This sounds like great fun, and I'm eager to help test this cube whenever that opportunity comes.

If drafting methods are a concern, you might want to take a look at the method used by the LRcube (which seems to have stopped running of late, boo). They used http://drafts.in/ for the drafting itself, then had the cube operator trade the cards to the players for the games. The rules they used are explained at http://limitedresourcescube.tumblr.com/basics

If any cards are being received, I'll have to look through my MtGO collection and pick out some of the more entertaining ones.

Note, the first cube I wanted to make was going to be just the strait worst, but it turns out I don't have enough strait-terrible cards for that, so instead we have what will PROBABLY be a terrible cube. :P

I'm interested, and my ability to participate depends on the where, when, and how. If, like the league, this is going to take place over a protracted period of time, I'm in. If, on the other hand, this is going to be an evening/day long event, my ability to participate may be limited by my work schedule.

I'd be up for this, either way is fine, though the PM way is likely a lot less confusing overall. (Also allows for a timezone differences in players).

For example, I am GMT+1 so, usually I could only trade late evening on MtGO as most of the time people aren't on otherwise (or on weekends).

We are at six, since it would work like the league in its current format, yes.

Sure, this sounds fun. I too am kind of limited in when I can do this, because work. But I'll try and fit it in. =)

I think there's still a spot left, so I'll gladly jump in to fill out the 8th seat.

Alright, we have all 8! Now, how the hell do I randomly create these packs...

Anyone have an RNG that will order numbers 1-383 randomly?

https://www.random.org/integer-sets/ Seems like it could easily allow you generate the numbers you need. For that matter, clicking this link should generate a randomly ordered set from 1 to 383 with each number occurring only once.

No one has yet, I have work today. It also takes an annoying crapton of time to assign each card a number. You'll get your packs by tomorrow, monday at the latest. I'll post in here when I send them out.

You could try making an excel file for the future and the using the random function to resort them each time you make packs from it.
