Desert Bus Craft-Along 2015

Postby Danielle Pepin » 22 Jul 2015, 12:05

I missed last year's Craft-Along but this year I had my proposal in before the deadline...still waiting... Anyone else on the still waiting boat with me? Anyone excited about their crafts enough to have started/finished their crafts?

I'm still waiting too, and I should probably get started soon if I want to get the stuff done in time, even if I don't get picked! I may have gotten a little ambitious with my submission. I've decided to put in real effort on the crafts AFTER ConBravo.

Worst case: Make it and then submit it for DB10. :)

I still haven't worked out what to submit.
Paintings seem over saturated.
My crafts I can do aren't really geeky.
I tried submitting a handmade plush, but hand sowing is rough, as it making it look acceptable and professional.

I think the deadline for requesting to make a craft have already passed, if you didnt get your request in already you need to hold your craft for next year and try to submit your idea earlier.

Also like AdmiralMemo said you can always finish the project and then submit your completed work when they put out the call for craft along items.

So this is what I've made so far. It's a QR code cross stitch that gives you the Konami code when you decode it. It was a really neat idea when I came up with it, but I think it needs something more in the execution. Any suggestions?

It looks perfect to me.
QR codes are minimalist abstract beauties.

Anything extra would take away from that.

That looks amazing! It's classy and nerdy at the same time.

I wasn't able to do the craft-along this year due to a poorly-timed surgery, but I'm excited to see everyone's projects.

RedHelveticaCake, clever stitching! I like how simple it is too. Anything more would probably detract from it's mystery.

I've only got a third of my Craft-Along done, since I'm moving tomorrow, but I should get the rest done in time. I already posted pictures in Share Your Art thread, but I figured I'd put one here.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody! I guess it's ready to ship then, and I can spend the rest of this month knitting the other project.

I'm starting on my needle felted mega Altaria today. I was busy with a summer course earlier. It is going to be bigger than the Kanto starter pokemon I did last year. I plan on putting in wire (in the form of Pipecleaners like Garfman did in his in progress pictures from last year).

Well I was experimenting with ways to do the wings on Mega Altaria, and got it to look nice felted onto the pipecleaner directly. Today I was playing with pipe cleaners to plan out the shape of the pokemon. I decided to see how good the size of the wings were, they were good. Then I decided to test how well the pipcleaner was held in, one side was good, but the other side pulled out a bit. So I tried to slide it back, it didn't work, and I pulled it all the way out in my fiddling. And now it can't slide back in.

Well it was a bit uneven, and didn't take me long to do. My lesson is to felt more around the pipecleaner like on the second wing. I guess I get to experiment more and keep one for myself :) (well a prototype that may be slightly misshapen :P )

Well, it's finally done! I've got everything together now, and Cards Against Desert Bus is complete and ready to go. I tried to make it a little more...significant, so I had a wooden box made for it as well, which I think definitely added something to it.

Also, I am literally entranced by the QR Code design. I think I know what I'm bidding on come DB9 ;)

Here are some WIP photos of my current project - the Nyan Cat scarf. I'm not as close to completion as I originally planned and I might have to pay extra for shipping to get it there on time. Mainly because the dark blue section took longer than I thought, and then I had to unpick and reknit chunks of it I wasn't happy with.

Update: Replacement cards ordered, being rushed to me. So crisis hopefully averted :P

That's good that you got it fixed. The pipe cleaner turned out to be too weak to support the giant fluffy tail things, so I used my armature wire to make an armature/frame, covered it in glue and wrapped it in wool (so that I can needle felt into it so that the wire is attached to everything). I put loops in the wire so that it would slide less and I could felt through them and secure stuff better. It isn't too much of a setback as I wanted to make one for me as well, so the pipe cleaner one is now the prototype for me.

It is going well and I feel like it will go quickly on the final one. I plan to do the 2 day shipping as it was only $2 extra last year. Although I do need to get it done before two days before because of the confirmation emails and pictures. Luckily I have been practicing with progress photos which I will post once I get a site that I can put the photos into the post and the photos off my camera.

Of course. Can't have a collection of Star Trek creatures without the iconic Tribble.
