Magnum Rewatch 23 - Tropical Madness

Postby Kathleen » 11 Aug 2015, 10:36

Higgins comes down with a case of romance induced tropical madness, and it's up to Magnum to save the day. Meanwhile Kathleen and Graham come down with a case of tangent madness.

The site still lists it as Magnum Rewatch 22.
Well, do you want an ethical solution or an effective one?

With the bet, I assumed that TC had given $50 to Rick, and then rick was paying back the $50 and his additional $50.

Dirks are a traditional Scottish hunting knife. Worn as part of regalia in formal occasions, such as weddings or a knighting. And at Scottish Highland Games in the US by Scotland Enthusiasts.

Loving the tangents in this episode. I kind of want to see a cinnamon-bun farm/ranch Crapshot miniseries.

Roy Dotrice is probably best known right now for being the narrator of the Game of Thrones Song of Ice and Fire series audio books, in which he does different voices for the series' numerous characters. They're very well done, and make for some great listening.

Just a note... yes, Roy Dotrice played a Mozart in Amadeus, but he did not play THE Mozart. He played his dad.
Tom Hulce played THE Mozart. He is also known as Quasimodo from Disney's Hutchback of Notre Dame, or Frankenstein's friend Henry in Frankenstein.

I'm always curious when Kathleen says that the characters are behaving "out of character". Given that they are entirely fictional, how do you try to judge that? Just based on their previous actions in the series or based on how you think someone in that position should act or some mix of the two?

IANAK (I am not a Kathleen (but I play one on TV)) but well-written fictional characters have established motivations, character traits and flaws, biases, strengths and limitations. Bad writers will break these in service of plot. Good writing will craft the plot around the limits of characterisation.

I can't see why Jenny would fall in love with Higgins, unless it was some kind of setup or practical joke, but I can totally understand why Higgins would act unusual if a young attractive lady showed him attention. People do strange things in love, I've seen it plenty of times before with my friends when they start courting - it's like some kind of alien body swap happened at times. Most bizarre...

For English people of the older persuasion, he's also the father of the actress who played Betty in "Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em", Michelle Dotrice.

Yeah, I was going to say, Roy Dotrice hasn't played a character on Game of Thrones, he's played them all.

Loved the "tangent!" exclamations.
