Twitch Interactivity Survey (research)

Postby Phailhammer » 22 Apr 2017, 21:57

(Edit 30/4) Thanks for all your help. I have now closed the survey so I can go through the data. I received 32 responses in all (about 3/5 of which were from here. :D ).

I'm currently studying for my Master's at UTS (University of Technology, Sydney), and have a research paper to do for one of my subjects. We have to look at an interactive television (iTV) platform and/or audience. Twitch was in the list of examples, so I decided to go with that. Specifically, I'm looking at how people interact with the streams they watch. For part of the research component, we had to construct a survey and have people complete it. I would appreciate it if you could take a bit of your time to complete it, and am open to any feedback you may have. It has 11 questions, all of which are multiple choice or check boxes, and many of them do have an "other" option if none of the options fit.

Also, if any mods and/or crew see this, would I be able to drop it in the chat towards/after the end of Rhythm Cafe tomorrow, for those who don't see it here?

The survey is here.

I apologies if this thread is inappropriate, or in the wrong place. Please let me know if there's a problem.

Thanks Bebop. :D

I'm getting a good stream of responses on this, so it should give me something I can use. Also, I've added a few responses based on feedback.

Wish I could've taken this. I'll do it if you need any more data in the future.

I may or may not need to gather more data for the next section, but I'll be sure to post it here if I do. :D

I ended up with 32 responses overall, which is enough for the purposes of this assignment. Oddly enough, all 32 respondents selected "The streamer/host" in response to the question "Why do you watch the stream(s) you do?". It seems personality means more to people than I thought; I was expecting a few to care more about the content than the person.

If most of them were from the LRR community, that might affect it too. I'm sure there are a lot of people in the same boat as me, who don't really watch streams except for LRR's, and watch them specifically because they like LRR.

Yeah, same. I watch LRR like 95% of the time and LRR-adjacent the other 5% of the time, with rare forays into my real-world associates.

You could have great content but if the personality isn't there people to make people care, some or many won't watch. It's the same with film, tv show, books, music.

I wonder if that's the problem I have with getting people to watch my streams...

The thing with streaming is you need a lot of things to go right. Choice of game, information, et al. I stream for XBOX, and I've seen how the choice of game will draw or not draw people in. I tried to sell out, and play GTA for a month to get new people to watch. Did not really work. I've had streams where I've been the only one there, or I've had 75 people, it fluctuates a lot.

Speaking of GTA, I've been trying to get a crew of 4 together to go through the online heists for a bit. Interested?

Sure, I've only done two heists, I think. I finishing up my PhD proposal over the next couple days. Give me a message and I'll jump in when I can.
