At the beginning of Part 12, Graham and Paul discuss how odd it is that there are a lot of people in hell. So, I'll now start a bit of a theological discussion.

Basically, it's still up for debate if good non-Christians must go to hell. Also, the whole concept of hell as we and Dante understood it didn't really exist in the standard Jewish tradition; the whole idea of hell was borrowed from Hades and all that other Greek tradition (like how Christmas and Easter are really taken from Pagan traditions).

As for my opinion, I don't really know, but I'd prefer the more lenient approach. My opinion is that if God really does want to punish decent people then I may as well become a humanist athiest.

That's something I've thought about as well. If non-Christians go to hell (you know, cuz they're likely breaking at least one commandment), place must be packed. Also, the lot of people that have been dead for centuries, even for Dante's time.

I may not be as well versed in medieval history as Brad, but I would guess that the word "hell" originated from "Hel."

yeah, but the Jewish tradition is how Brad described. The word hell comes from a different tradition, but the Judeo-christian concept of hell is derived from the burning rubbish dump in Jerusalem.

Sooo, the word is from Nordic Mythology, the modern concept generally draws from Hades, and the Judeo-Christian/Biblical mentions (most of the places where the bible says "Hell") are usually referencing the burning rubbish dump in Jerusalem.

I'm just glad that the traditions in which I was raised, and a lot of modern approaches generally try to cut through the theological mistakes that mainstream Christian traditions have made.

I've heard vague comments at some point (in a lrrcast or mtg stream or something) along the lines of "hard drive" and "recovery"... so it sounds like something a bit more serious than just forgetting. I dunno the details, or whether everything still exists, but I'm hoping it is...

I haven't had a chance to try recovering it, because if it does work, I don't have space to back up the files off the drive...

I'm guessing you meant to say the drive is toast, not that you've discovered the Curie temperature while making breakfast.

I assume from your post you already know the cardinal rule for data recovery: never write to the drive you are recovering from.

If you can provide any more specifics I/someone might be able to provide some help/tips.
For a possible hardware issue, a few bad sectors in a bad place seems the most likely problem. If it's just been a sector or two you'd expect most of it would be fixable, it's just a matter of finding software that can read h264 and get past without barfing.

I don't know any tools that can read SMART values for hard drives on a mac, but if you can find something they might give a hint as to what happened (assuming it is hardware related).

In any case it's nice to know the status finally, even if it is a potentially grim one.


Oh, and don't forget to make sure the drive cables are nice and snug at both ends, sometimes sata cables seem to like loosening themselves.
