Liu says he was one of scores of prisoners forced to play online games to build up credits that prison guards would then trade for real money. The 54-year-old, a former prison guard who was jailed for three years in 2004 for "illegally petitioning" the central government about corruption in his hometown, reckons the operation was even more lucrative than the physical labour that prisoners were also forced to do.

This is also the country that imprisons tourists for taking photos, and unlike other idiot governments that do that, china has a tendancy to not let them go after a day.

Yeah, real crap down there. I don't know what kind of monster would kill their own daughters just so that they can have a son.


Also, surely the one child policy is totally not gonna help, as that will result in an aging population increasingly reliant on social security with a lack of a young and able workforce, plus to add to that the lack of younger women results in obviously FAR more single men, and then following that, less child, resulting in older populations. (If I were so desperate, I would introduce a two child policy, as first, population less likely to age, have an able workforce, and would result in less murders of baby girls (more likely to have boys at least once, and well, if you get two daughters, what you gonna tell the older one after the younger one dissappears. Still, wouldn't want any rule like that.)

Bloody hell China is a shitty place to live. Total lack of basic human rights. Its annoying as well, as we aren't gonna bust in and tell them to treat people like human beings, as there is just too many of them, they make too much and they have WMDs.

Sure, how about the fact that leading up to one of the last few olympic games (Don't remember which, when they come around i remove tv's from my house to avoid catching the dumb.) that was hosted in china "Relocated" thousands of peoples homes just to make a new street... and the people who's homes had been destroyed were reporting shit like being told at 8am they have 45minutes to get there shit and get out and anything left is gone.

We also don't do it because we don't have to. In the last decade alone their common people have swelled from incredibly unenviable economic positions to a degree of rather fair wealth. They're changing the country for themselves. It will take a while, but that's how it should be. When you force change, you end up with massive issues. For example, if North Korea was defeated through warfare, the two Koreas would never properly reunite. They would be even more drastically different worlds than east and west Germany.

However, that doesn't change that this is a pretty terrible practice. How did they even come up with an idea like this?

China isn't alone in its gender-focussed infanticide. India practices it too... Although it isn't so much a policy of the state in India, they still do little to try to prevent it...

The problem with the whole male/female balance thing is that it make sense for a society to have more females than males. But some Asian societies still see women as property in some respects, in that the family of a female will have to provide a dowry to the husband when they marry. So having female babies = poorer family, male babies = richer family and a continuation of the lineage.

People should care that getting rid of all the females from the next generation is a fundamentally bad idea but it's one of those things where everyone thinks that everyone else should do something about it.

Keeping on topic: I am always surprised when things like WoW have real world consequences. Maybe I'm naive... Say what you want about China; they're on the cutting edge of human rights violations.

I just realized; if a society is so goddamn stupid as to not be able to handle breeding properly, maybe we should leave them to it? It might seem cruel, but nature is indifferent. It's that strong and weak thing, where in this case weakness is not being able to look after your own society well enough that it can actually propagate.
