Installation Anxiety 2010

This week’s video is here! Go check it out!

Naturally, this is a remake of this video. (which you may, or may not, have seen before).

In the forum thread on this video, James has answered some questions you may have about this video, which I have re-posted below:

Why did we remake this?
As most of you know, we were invited to w00tstock this year to showcase some of our videos. We decided that Installation Anxiety was a great video and could play really well with that type of audience (It totally did by the way). But we quickly realized that while it was a solid video, its production values no longer reflect what we are capable of making. So we decided to re-shoot it. Once w00tstock was over, we discussed using it as one of our regular weekly updates. After several talks we decided to go for it for it. We know there will be a couple people that won’t agree, but we are proud of the remake and wanted to showcase it.

Are you going to remake more?
Who knows. It won’t become a regular thing, so for those who think we copped out this week, don’t worry. It won’t happen again anytime soon. Brand new, totally original content returns next week, and the week after that, and the week after that, and the week after that. After that I can’t make any promises as we haven’t planned that far ahead.

I’d like to amend to that that there are a few videos in our back catalog that we have definitely considered remaking in the past, and we may still do so in the future. But this is certainly not going to become a regular thing, with this video we simply wanted to give it a try and see how it worked.

  1. Nicely done! For some reason it felt like it had something missing. Or maybe its because of all the extra space you guys have now….iunno

  2. A well done remake all I can say is I think you would of been better off changing some lines so that people who have seen the original video had something new to watch but any one who complains about it really has no right.

  3. eh…
I understand the reason for why you guys did this and all but I really hope this is a last for remaking. It’d be nice for a remake that was a “bonus” movie or at least not part of the weekly show but eh.

Maybe I don’t like the idea because I’m not a fan of this particular remake. Mostly cause 1) You see the camera guy in the reflection for the majority of the final scene.
    and mostly because…
    2) What you guys did ages ago was good because it was just… amateur like, it was brilliant because it wasn’t top notch. Its like if George Lucas remade Star Wars VI…. would never be as good because of all the cg effects and all…

Of course I’m looking into this WAY to much and w.e you guys do I’ll love so if it makes you happy then do it 🙂

  4. I think the main negative reaction isn’t to the remake itself, but the fact that it was posted as a regular weekly update. I don’t think anyone is questioning the improvement in quality, they just want to see something on Monday that they haven’t seen before.

  5. “it was brilliant because it wasn’t top notch.”

what? it was brilliant because it was well written. its not like they CG’d a T-Rex into the background in the remake.

  6. I would like to point out that you had the perfect opportunity to include the lemon battery gag that Jer suggested.

  9. A classic – remade.

I feel somewhat sad. The old version has a much better delivery of …err.. words? The new version feels very staged, whereas I could totally believe the old version.

    Also : Epic Beard!

  11. I’m going to have to agree with Andy: The old one has better pacing and the lines are delivered in a more convincing way.
The new one does feel rather staged.

The new one isn’t bad, but it’s not as great as the original.

  12. As far as I am concerned, your production value has gone up considerably since you began. Why not remake all the really good stuff so you can show it in all your shiny glory?

  13. I liked it. Well done, great choice. I would like more, if that is what you would like to do.

  14. If anything I can appreciate this video solely for what it shows about how far you guys have come. Oh, and FYI, you totally did rock w00tstock (at least the one in Portland). [underpants ftw]

  17. I’m also uncomfortable with this re-make. It’s good, but lacks the charm of the original.

In early days, I loved LRR because it was just a bunch of kooky college guys making hilarious videos on a tight budget, and so had that wonderful amateur charm.

Nowadays, you’ve got way more resources – which is great because you can do bigger and better things – but when you re-make old videos, they completely lose that charm.

Also, the delivery really was off – I couldn’t hear what you were saying due to a few rushed lines :-/
