For those of you who can’t make it to the LoadingReadyRun 5th Anniversary live screening, there’s good news! Keep your Saturday afternoon open (or whatever time of day corresponds to roughly 5 PM PST wherever you live), because… You can still watch some of the awesome things that are going to be happening!

As Graham recently posted in the discussion thread for the screening:

Did we mention we’re webcasting the Q&A panel with an interactive chat room, Desert Bus style?

Cause we are.

I don’t think we told you all yet.

But now we have told you all, so you have no excuse for not tuning in to the live feed as it happens! Stay tuned to the site for more details about where to watch. We look forward to having you watch, even if you can’t be there in person.

5 Years? Why the hell didn’t anyone tell me???

After much playing around with my Laptop and not being able to record voice (I honestly hate this thing) I have decided that I will in fact just write what I wanted to say.

Five years is a long time to do anything. And somehow we have managed to make it to that mark. And it wouldn’t have been remotely possible if it hadn’t been for the tremendous amount of time and energy put in by my fellow LRR crew members. First and formost I want to thank these guys. Morgan, Bill, Graham, Paul, Matt, Jer and Kathleen, you guys have been a great group of people to work with. But more importantly you guys are some of my closet friends and the majortiy of you have been for the past decade or more. I met Morgan and Jeremy 12 years ago, Bill 11 years ago, Graham about 9 years ago, Paul about 6 years ago and Kathleen 4 years ago. Those numbers show people we were friends first and LRR second. And I think that is what makes LRR such an amazing thing. I also need to thank the countless number of people that have been around for the past 5 years; other friends, roomates, girlfriends. You guy have been an amazing support group and we couldn’t do this without you guys.

Too our fans, THANK YOU!! Words cannot do justice to those of you who come back on a week to week (or even day to day) basis. For me this site has never been about making money or becoming HUGE on the internet. It has always been about our ability to make people laugh on a weekly basis. Wether that be the 114 Paul mentioned in his post, the almost 8000 of you who watch our videos on a weekly basis or the millions that see our stuff when it hits big. To know that I am involved in something that can make a person laugh for 5 minutes a week is a fantastic feeling.

Five years ago Graham and Paul came to some of us with an idea that they had. They were going to write, shoot, edit and post a brand new short every week. Now back then the site didn’t have the “organization” it has now. Basically the site was Graham and Paul’s and the rest of us would do what we could when we felt like it really. I won’t lie, when I heard the idea I gave LoadingReadyRun a shelf life of 2 months tops. I figured we would screw around for a couple months, make a couple videos, then Christmas would hit and we would be derailed and that would be that. A dozen or so videos that we could pull out every couple of years and have a laugh. Now it seems everytime I start up the interwebs I am reminded of how incredibly off I was. If you were to do the simple math and take 5 years worth of videos with 1 video every week, “Rapstar 64k” was our 260th video update. That blows my mind, then you take into consideration the Phailhaus, Iron Stomach Challenge, The Whatever Thing, and the various other bonus videos, you have one floored James Turner. At least 350 videos that we have produced over the last 5 years. That day I scoffed at the idea of LoadingReadyRun is a distant memory, and in it’s place is a countless number of new ones [memories]. Lets take a second to look back at a couple of those shall we.

LOADINGREADYLIVE: Easily one of the most important events to ever take place in the history of LRR. Simply put, if not for LoadingReadyLive, we would not be where we are today. That show cemented the crew you have come to know and love over the past 2 years and will continute to love for the next X amount of years. It was a big confidence booster as well. Its one thing to get infront of a camera week after week with your friends, but to be put up on stage when more than half of us had no formal acting/stage experience was both terrifying and awesome at the same time. I am forever grateful that I was able to participate in that show and it has made LoadingReadyRun what it is today.

DESERT BUS FOR HOPE: Are you serious? We raised 22,800.00 playing a video game made ten plus years ago on a dead system? For the rest of our life’s this will be one of the greatest things I think any of us have been a part of. And its also something that I don’t think would have happened if not for LoadingReadyRun.

SAN DIEGO ROADTRIP 2007: This is a hard thing to put into words. The Roadtrip was not entirely a LRR thing. Sure we were heading down to The Comic Con to see our video (Talk like a Pirate) in the festival, but more often that not that road trip was for us. But quite like Desert Bus it was something that I don’t think would have happened if it weren’t for this website. And it produced some of the funniest and most memorable moments I have ever shared with these guys.

And those are just some of the big things that we have been able to do over the past couple years thanks to this site. I haven’t even touched on the hundreds of video shoots that have happened. Notables being, 14 ways to eat Fries, 2004 Holiday Special, Sleep Dep Experiment, Pimp My Chair, The Nanaimo Road Trips, The LoadingReadyRumble, Slacking For Gold, Toast, CSI: CSI, Ways to Keep Cool. And those are just off the top of my head.

LRR has come a long way from that initial idea over 5 years ago. Its something that none of us could have ever expected, but almost what we had always wished for. You guys have made what we do worth doing. Season 6 starts in less than a weeks time and I really think you guys are going to like whats coming. Season 6 promises to be our best season yet and it will be made all the better with fans like you guys.

Thanks for a fantastic first 5 years. Lets see how the next 5 go.

A Journey of Five Years Starts with a Single Month

So, here we are: I have now been making silly videos every week for over 1/5th of my life. A lot has changed since 2003, in my own life, in the world, and especially on the Internet. There was way less video around then, for one. Yoube didn’t exist in 2003, neither did Twitter, or Facebook (it was still restricted to only certain universities).

When Graham and I started this site, we really had no idea what we were doing (some may argue that we still don’t), but I think LoadingReadyRun is really a testament to the power of just doing something regularly over a long period of time. Not only do you get better, but without even really thinking about it, you end up with this huge archive of work that you can look back on with pride. Anyone out there who is interested in any kind of artistic endeavor (especially video), DO IT. I can’t stress this enough. Even if it is shitty, it is far better to produce a finished product then to sit around thinking about what you could do if you had the time/money/ability.

I will probably wax nostalgic a little more on this week’s podcast, but for the moment, I thought I would leave you with a couple of news entries from LRR’s very first month of operation.

This is it. The big fanfare. It is important to remember that I don’t think even our parents were watching the site at this point.

Notice the date. LRR has a  long tradition of lateness, but we still have never missed an update.

114! whooo! Notice how none of these posts have any comments. This was before the forum, too, so we were not getting any kind of feedback.

To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes, I think by Robert Rodriguez, “Everyone has 3 terrible movies in them, so it is important to get them out as quickly as possible. That way you can get on to the good stuff.”

I don’t know about you, but I think LRR is finally on to the good stuff.

Five years

Five years.

Today’s video not only marks the end of LoadingReadyRun’s fifth season, but it also happens to have been posted five years to the day after this site went live back in 2003 (or it would have been, if not for some unfortunate delays). If, on that day, you had asked any of the crew what they thought they would be doing five years down the road, I don’t expect that any of us would have described where we are today, or what a major part of our lives this site has become. I know I wouldn’t have, but I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out. I’d like to describe some of my experiences over the last five years, and I’m hoping that maybe some of the other guys will follow suit, and post their own.

I really don’t remember a whole lot about the early days of the website. At the time this site went up, I had only lived in Victoria for a couple years, and I didn’t really know Graham especially well, and I had met Paul probably only a couple of times. Between university and work, I kept myself pretty busy, but I still found time to hang out with the guys occasionally. Bill, Morgan, James, Jer, and Allen, mostly. I think, in those days, I was drifting away from the group a little, in the typical post-high school, moving on with your life kind of way. I happened to be hanging out with them on Halloween 2003, and thus was included in the very first Halloween special, but I wasn’t really involved in the site in any major way for a couple of years. I remember feeling pretty jealous, though. I followed the site pretty much from the get-go, and every week, I’d see my friends involved in this really cool thing. Having fun, being creative, and publishing it themselves. I constantly thought “Why can’t I do that?” and I remember wishing that maybe sometime Graham would need me for a bit, and I could be a real part of this thing all my friends were doing. The debut of 64K really floored me. I’ve been envious of Graham, Jer, and Morgan for their roles in those videos ever since the LoadingReadyRap hit the internet. I’ll admit it, hazMatt is a pretty direct result of my love for those characters, and my desire to “be that cool”. Looking back on things, I don’t know why I didn’t ask to be involved sooner. For the most Part, my contribution to the first few seasons was limited to situations that called for a large video game collection (see: Uwe Boll: PSA, Uwe Boll: An Apology) or a car (see: Jangles & Jones, Nanaimo Road Trip).

Then came Live!. I had been helping with gear and transportation for a while, when the idea of Live! was proposed. I really liked the idea, and I knew they were going to need people, and cars, so I told Graham one day that I really wanted to be involved. He agreed, seemingly surprised that I was expressing interest, and over the following several weeks, I was aggressive about playing roles in videos (see: Rejected Mac Ads, RapidFire series 1, Now in HD, Small Time, CCYD. [actually, don’t see CCYD.]). I needed some practice if I was going to be involved in Live!, and it was convenient, because we were all meeting up anyhow. Live! was one of the best experiences of my life, and it’s an accomplishment I think all of us are very proud of. We came together, worked hard, and put on a great show. In the end, we broke even, and not only did we not hate each other afterwards, but we were as close as we had ever been. Putting on that show cemented us as lifelong friends, and proved that we could do anything we put our minds to. It was also the crucial moment for the website, as it locked down our core crew, and helped us to realize that what we were doing was no longer just a hobby, it was something more. It’s also one of the most prized accomplishments of my life – I proved to myself that I could be a part of this cool thing all my friends were doing – that, in fact, I already was. I remember Graham telling me after the show closed, “Y’now Matt, I have to admit that when we had the idea for the show I didn’t think of you as someone who would be in it, but I’m glad you were. The show was stronger for it.” That statement meant a lot to me.

Ever since Live! I’ve been a regular member of the cast, attending meetings, giving input on scripts, manning the camera or boom mic when necessary. As of today though, I also have some writing experience to my name. The RapStar 64k video has been a baby of mine for the last couple of months, and has undergone several re-writes and revisions since I first planned out the basic plot. There’s no way I could have written this on my own, Graham and Paul were crucial to the completion of the script we performed for today’s update, and everyone provided a lot of great suggestions and input along the way. It’s one of the things I like about producing content for this site, when I brought out the very first version of the script, unpolished and unfinished, no one said it sucked, or dismissed it as a write-off. We put our heads together, proposed ideas, and pieced together a finale I’m really proud of. I think it’s a fantastic video, and it’s a step in my own creative development.

I have really high hopes for season six. There are going to be some changes to how we do things, with the intent of building our audience, and establishing a more notable place on the internet. Regardless of the reasons though, I think you’ll really like what we have in store. The crew spent a lot of time planning, and we’re taking everything we’ve learned over the last five seasons, and using it to put together some of the highest quality, strongest material yet. We’re all immensely proud of what’s come out of everything we’ve done so far, but this year we’re raising the bar. I’m calling it now; season six is going to be an epic year.

Before I sign off, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you to Graham, Paul, Jer, James, Morgan, Bill, and Kathleen. Twenty-five years from now, I hope we really do find ourselves gathered around a couch trying to remember all the things we’ve done. This site has been a monumental accomplishment, and has enriched my life immeasurably. I don’t know where I’d be without you guys or this website, but I wouldn’t give it up for the world. You guys are my best friends. I love you all. Secondly, I want to thank our viewers. You guys amaze me. I realize that I sometimes come off a bit rough, but seriously, guys, you’re all awesome. I don’t know what drew you to the site originally, but I’m glad you’re here. Your support keeps us going, and your feedback is has been invaluable in improving the content we produce. You are as much a part of making this site what it is as any member of the cast. Again, thank you all, and we’ll see you in season six!

Hey guys. Haven’t done a preview pic for a while. So here is picture that will give you almost no real insight to the video we are shooting today. And I will be getting some pictures up soon that I took during the spore video. Picture forth coming.
