Moonbase 2.0 Part 1: The De-Crapening
May 30th, 2009

So, as you may know if you’ve been reading our various Twitter feeds, we’re in the process of expanding our office space by moving the moonbase across the hall. It’s a little more than twice the size of our current space–and still very much on the moon–and it’ll be great once we get in. But first, it’s going to require some serious 80s cleaning-up montages. Which is a luxury we don’t have, so we’ve been putting in the work.

The space was previous occupied by an artist collective/flop house/conpiracy bunker/possible opium den. Actually, of the myriad tenants that frequented the space, the one guy we ever talked to was cool, but that didn’t stop this progression:

  • Friday: Giant, unauthorized party with upwards of 300 people. Landlord shuts it down.
  • Saturday: Tenants pull truck up and start loading out things they care about.
  • Sunday: Tenants trash the place; pulling down molding, tearing out lights, breaking bulbs.
  • Monday: Rent cheque bounces, tenants are gone. We are offered the space.

So hey! Boon for us! Cause our current space is really small, which we discovered during Desert Bus.

But good lord did the previous tenants ever leave a ton of crap lying around, which I made a point to take a bunch of pictures of, as I just gotten a new lens and wanted to play around. It won’t really give you a good idea of what the space looks like yet, but that’s for later. Enjoy!

  1. Image number 12 looks like some sort of script – maybe this could spawn an adapted version of Spam Theatre?

I really like Image 16, stylistically. It really looks like the crane is just floating there in the air, and it really goes nicely with the industrial scene outside the window and the more barren focus indoors.

  2. Thanks for the sneak preview, tho’ some of the shots were too a bit too blurry.

You should paint the whole place green so you won’t be limited to just one wall for effects shooting.

  5. What’s a conpiracy bunker?

Just read some of the scrawls, the were nutters.

  6. So, if 300 people fit in a space twice the size of the Moonbase, does that mean you coulda fit 150 in the first Moonbase?

  14. Be careful, the last thing we want is the LRR crew under demonic possession on the moon.

  15. New office spac- I mean moon space you say? Interesting, you guys could probably use that. The original base seemed to be small…

My goodness children who were the previous owners? They deserve to be sent to jail for just living like that! …What would their mothers think…?

Make sure you guys put up some pics of the finished project. Good luck with the renovations.

  16. Hey so, if I’m still unemployed by this Saturday, do you folks want some help wrangling that junk? My commute to the moon is quite minimal, and I seriously need something to do. Unpaid LRRterns = yes?

  17. Yep, the previous tenants are definitely druggies, well that or pedos.

  19. Interruptor & Tapir12, I wish we’d put up this info a week ago.
We’re basically done most of the work now (photos to follow) but if you want to help us sort props and organize our costume rack (the thrill!!), it’d be cool to see you folks again.

  20. Amusingly enough, the Heidelberg logo there is on my barracks door. You have now cleaned up after soldiers, or prior service soldiers. Thanks for inadvertently supporting the troops.

Love the jokes and videos, and Desert Bus is a beautiful thing. Keep it up guys.

  21. The toys etc. really aren’t that weird – artsy people (or drug-using bohemian pseudo-artists) love to have toys and things around simply because they can. I suppose it stems from the same wilful childishness and love of ‘innocent wonder’ that inspires XKCD et al; remember the ball pit? Everyone likes letting go of adulthood a little bit when they get the chance, and if your the sort who abandons social norms to the extent such house-wrecking drifters often do, kids toys have a natural appeal.

Speculation aside, I’ve never seen a squat (been to a few in Liverpool and London, with poet/musician people) which didn’t have toys like this lying around. Even saw a full-size rocking horse in Hackney once.

  22. I’m going to need a transcript of those crazy scribblings – I think they may be onto something big…

    Comment by Carnkhan4 — June 1, 2009 @ 6:14 pm

  23. I think it’s what RedHanded said… or they’re members of a satanic cult plotting to overthrow the world on the 7th day of the 8th week of the 2nd year from the last great awakening of the camel-lord Balk, in order to usher in a new age of despair and darkness.

Both seem equally likely. Besides, what do you expect? Only crazies live on the light side of the moon. Dark side is where it’s at.

Good luck with the new flat; hope you all don’t get abducted/possessed/horribly maimed. :)

  24. The pile of EMT straps in picture nine is quite funny to me since I just used a pile like that at work not too long ago.

  25. Did any of your former neighbors happen to go by the name Moral Puppington? Seriously, that pterodactyl and it’s mention in the script nailed to the wall makes the place look like a former stop-motion studio or one huge piece of video installation fodder…

    Comment by easytoremember — June 3, 2009 @ 5:57 pm

  26. Wow, that certainly…interesting… Has an odd creepy feel, like you’re purchasing your own little parcel of Silent Hill. Here’s hoping you guys get the place cleaned up without anyone disappearing into a horrific alternate dimension. XP
