SKELETORS DICK!!!
August 15th, 2008

Posted by james

I truly believe “Skeletor’s Dick” will go down as one of the most talked about videos in LRR history.  But don’t take my word for it. Before i get into what actually went into shooting this video of videos here is Geoffs initial response to the almost 7 full pages of responses on the forums.

Is this possibly one of the most controversial LRR videos yet? If ever we released a DVD single of the video, I would imagine that the cover would contain a quote along the lines of “Redefines low-brow…”

For all of those offended, the original purpose of the song was to combine Dio with Linkin Park and to spoof old 80s cartoons. We felt that going over the top was justified as the subject matter was just too ridiculous not too. I’ll add that the concept of the video came waaaay after the actual writing and subsequent recording of the song (possibly a one year difference in itself. The song was toned down and edited severly from a rambling first draft.)

I can see how the song (especially in light of the video concept) could be seen as a homophobic rant on seeing your mate’s penis. However, I believe it was Graham who nailed it when he said something to the effect of Skeletor’s dick being so terrifying in-and-of-itself that it is akin to gazing into the Ark of the Covenant. Basically, don’t do it. The song was written about 3 or maybe 4 years ago, and in hindsight, my slightly older (maybe not wiser) self can see how the “rape” line could be in bad taste. If I could do anything differently I would probably at least change that line or reword it differently. Besides that, I stand by our lyrics. Take a gander at any hardcore death-metal lyrics and tell me if they don’t already sound like spoofs already. Not too mention, our lyrics are almost Disney-esque compared to say, someone like “Cannibal Corpse”. And for the record, I have nothing against their lyrics either. Vile stuff to be sure and it doesn’t exactly earn it’s share of space on my ipod either, but I certainly respect their art.

What I can’t understand is the outspoken hate for the video. Granted, it’s understandable that this song/video is not for everyone, but do people really need to go out of their way to talk about how mediocre it is? If you don’t like the song, cool…I can dig it. But Graham obviously put his heart and soul into the shooting and editing of this video. I’m glad that a few people have pointed out the quality of the actual video, despite their distaste for the song, so cheers to you guys. It was meant as simple infectuous fun, and for me that really shines through in the video.

All I can say is that it was a blast writing the song with Pat ages ago, and making the video was an experience that I’ll never forget. “Watch it GROOOOOOW!”

Geoff

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Anyways, lets talk about what actually went into shooting this video. We met up at Bills place for the shoots of Pat and Geoff at the beginning and the shoots of Pat and Skeletor in the house (ie, The bathroom, the Kitchen, and Pat freaking out while he was sleeping.) Most of that went pretty straight forward. I don’t recall who it was that suggested Morgan try to eat everything through the masks eye hole, but whoever it was, good call. That is what we in the business call “COMIC GENIUS”.

After securing all the footage we needed for that part of the video we were able to pile into 2 cars and make our way down to the underground orbiting moonbase (or whatever the hell we call that place) to acquire the needed costumes and give Pat and Geoff and chance to pretty themselves up for the music video portion of the shoot.

After grabbing the costumes and the makeup/hair wax we proceed to the top of Mt. Doug. It was about 10:30 at this point and i didn’t even know one could drive up to the very top, so that was a interesting drive for me. Once we reached the top the rain had died down a bit and the fog wasn’t to much of an issue, in fact it might have made the dream scene (the one scene we were shooting up there) look even more awesome than it could have. We were up there for about 30 minutes and then hightailed it outta there. One interesting note is that those scenes were lite entirely with the high beams of my car and Pats car.

The final portion of the video was the music video aspect of the whole thing. This was a very important part and we wanted it to look as good as we could have possibly made it.  So while we were at the moon station we picked up the dolly in hopes that we could get some wicked looking shots. Wether or not the shoots were wicked is yet to be seen by really anyone but Graham because they were all left on the cutting room floor. BASTARD, made us drag that bitch all the way to UVIC and set it up and he didn’t use even 1 second of footage from it. Now, once we all saw how awesome the video turned out we were Ok with the no dolly shots. So we chilled up at the underground lot of UVIC for an hour blasting the song over and over again from my car doing it over and over again. It was pretty epic.

So that’s Skeletors Dick, if it wasn’t your cup of tea then that is to bad. This is something that the crew has been looking forward to doing for years. And personally i am so happy that we waited as long as we did. 2 years ago we could have never done this song justice but I feel that we made something we are all extremely proud of. Here are some pictures from the filming. Enjoy.

LRR.Community Update: August 15, 2008

Yes we are halfway through august. Enjoy the rest of your summer chilluns, cuz it’s officially 3/4 finished. What’s not finished is LRR, though I have a little less to write about this update.

Paul is My Hero

As he notes in his own blog posts below, Paul has made some subtle updates to the site, adding a search field to the videos page and adding an iPhone portal for all our videos and podcasts. Expect other revisions over the coming months as the final gremlins in the new site design are put to the sword.

Desert Bus Rumblings

Several days ago, the Desert Bus site updated for the first time in almost nine months. Granted, it’s not an extremely exciting update, but it’s probably enough to let slip that the crew are already hard at work on its followup. Last year’s event was a huge success, and we are firmly committed to one-upping our success with something bigger, better and (hopefully) longer.

Bookmark DesertBus.org and stand by for more news!

PAX LRRmana

With James, Matt, Morgan and I all going to PAX, we thought it might be fun to get together with those of you who are also going to chill and shoot the rhetorical shit. I’m currently conducting a poll on the forums to see, in general, what kind of get-together you guys would be interested in. Would a pub work best for you? How about a restaurant? Or maybe we could just see if we can borrow some “hang-out space” on the convention floor somewhere?

Check out the poll and let me know :)!

Great Minds . . . Think About Calculus

Keith points out that 2PStart did a Geometry Wars 2 strip last week that bears a striking resemblance to a joke from our own GWRE2 video. While they were not, in fact, inspired by us, their comic is still funny so you should go check it out.

Dem LRR Boyz

Spartanhelmet has noted the existence of “Dem LRR Boyz” a boy band that has apparently stolen our name. Chalk this one up for the “curiosity” file; we’ve long known about the existence of another (industrial) 64k, so it’s hardly surprising that someone else is using LRR. I’m pretty sure, at least, that they don’t have a commodore connection . . .

15 Seconds of Fame (Bathroom Humour Edition)

Wanna be on the LRR podcast? Record an answer to the following question and email it to James by Saturday August 16 at noon (subject: 15 SECONDS OF FAME). We will pick the best one, play it on the podcast, and comment on it, potentially giving you 15 seconds of fame.

This week’s question:
You are the proprietor of a new Victoria establishment called Creationism: The Bar. One of your mandated tasks is to create a men’s washroom that is pleasant to be in, but discourages loitering and other nefarious male washroom activities. Describe this washroom in 15 seconds or fewer.

Email responses to James.

Thats’ it for this week, folks. Sorry there’s not been a teaser pic yet, but expect one to go up tomorrow at some point.

Cheers!

LRR.Community Update: Aug 8, 2008
August 8th, 2008

So how were the last four days for you? Good? My X-Box broke and then came partially back from the dead, and I’m still coming to grips with being a quarter-century old on Sunday . . . so it’s likely your week was better than mine. Let’s see what the community has been up to.

Misty Waters

Proudfoot has posted the third installment of his popular LRR Community Profile series. This episode, he and Misty prove that she is an interesting person, and have a very insightful discussion.

Listen to it here.

Backwards LRRies

For some reason, Lord Crusher has decided that we (and our videos) need to be awarded, and has thus started scheming the first ever LRR Fan Awards (which presumably he plans to hold in association with the still-hypothetical LRRCon). He’s emailing deets to those who would like to be involved and while I – as a member of the crew – might be a bit biased (weighting the procedure towards my opus, Vietnam) you, the casual LRR fan, might want to be involved.

Uncle Graham Wants You!

Or at least he wants to know what you think about the site. The recent controversy over the content and style of Skeletor’s Dick has prompted Graham to post a survey asking what you (the LRR fan) would like to see more of. If you want your voice heard, know that we are listening, and that this could be a good venue to post your thoughts.

What’s In Store . . .

2Stepz has started a thread soliciting items folks would like to see added to the store. She points out that polo shirts should be easy, while others have pointed to hoodies and girl shirts as obvious additions.

Unfortunately, while such things may seem simple to produce, they have a tendency to cost a lot of money. A run of a couple hundred T-shirts costs a couple thousand dollars, and that just isn’t feasible when you’re not already selling a lot of merch. The more we sell of our current stuff, the more new stuff we will be able to produce, so if you want to see more products added, the best thing you can do is buy what’s available.

That said, it’s good to dream big, so let’s hear what other ideas you folks have for merch.

Store Suggestions

Creepy CrawLRRs

In probably the creepiest thread I’ve seen in a while, masamune wants to hear about dreams involving the LRR cast. I have personally had a number of dreams about the cast, including one last weekend where Mega64 beat us to the punch on a video concept we’ve been planning. I also had one where Paul shot me in the back in a dirigible hangar and I had to go to a party with blood spewing out of my chest without staining anything . . . and then there was the one where we were all in Vegas: Paul shot someone in the stairwell of our hotel, and be had to bury the body in a watermelon stand down the road.

My dreams are weird.

If yours are too, you can post them here: Dreams Including the LRR Cast

15 Seconds of Fame

As I mentioned on this week’s podcast, we are starting a new segment called 15 Seconds of Fame. Each week on the blog, I will be asking for your opinions on something we discussed. This could be as trivial as Matt’s “problems” with Gears of War, or as important as the askLRR questions you folks often throw to us.

If you have and opinion, you can save it as a 15-second sound file and email it to James (subject: 15 SECONDS OF FAME). We will choose the one we like the most, play it on the podcast for all to hear, and respond to it, giving YOU 15 seconds of fame (or more if you count our responses). Entries of more than 15 seconds will be disqualified.

This week’s topic: what do you think of the new site design?

Email responses here.

And that’s all for this week more next week, and another 15 seconds of fame!

Cheers, folks!

What manner of video could this possibly be in aid of? I could tell you, but you all have such fun guessing!

Judging by how far off you were last week though, I bet you won’t…

Emergency Situation

I believe Paul wrote in the script “we can shoot this like ‘High Noon’, so locations are refereced without regard for practicality” or something similar. That means green screen time!

Admittedly, we have a much, much better green screen now than we did then. In the photos below, I’ve included a shot from the “Uwe Boll: Decision 2008” shoot so you can see.

On the upside it was a fairly straightforward shoot. Once I figured out how people would be oriented in the room, we just had to line up the shots. The most difficult one was the over-the-shoulder shot of Matt and Morgan, who are both in the same shot, but split-screen so the desk can be arted in between them.

Green screening can be a tough thing to act on because it require a good concept of spatial relations. You’re always moving around to make sure that the screen is filling the shot behind the action, which results in the actors having no real sense of where they are.

After I got the footage home, I built the room in 3D, and set up a series of virtual cameras at roughly the same locations as the real ones were, and went from there. There’s some screencaps from my 3D program below as well.

Anything you would want to know is covered in episode 01 of Loading Time, so check it out! Tim also took most of the photos below.
