LRRcasts on Blip.tv

As some of you may have noticed, LRR went offline for a couple of hours last month because we exceeded our bandwidth limit. At the time, that limit was 700GB. Now, granted, about 300GB* of that went to Desert Bus, but considering that we no longer host most of our videos, I was perplexed as to where the rest was going. Are we serving over 400GB worth of images and text files a month? After doing a little bit of digging through the server stats, it became apparent that the problem is that you guys really like to hear us talk. About a half of our monthly bandwidth goes into serving the LRRcast mp3 files.

Since our new video host also works with audio files, we have decided to move the LRRcasts over to Blip.tv. The LRRcasts should work just the same as before since the actual files are the same, but they will probably load a little faster, what with Blip’s CDN and whatnot. I also took this opportunity to spruce up the LRRcast player window a little to bring it in line with the new site layout (the popup LRRcast window hasn’t been updated since we started podcasting 2006)

As always, please let me know if there are any problems or glitches.

*Of that 300GB, >100GB was used by 5 stupid bmp imges that were submitted as milestone pics. Turns out WordPress doesn’t scale bmp properly, so everytime the front page of the site loaded, it had to load ~3MB worth of full size MS Paint drawings. Grrrrr. Live and learn.

Mercenaries for Hire: Behind-the-Scenes

In the post for cHUSTLE 04, I mentioned that the Friday was a busy shooting day. A large part of that was that we were also shooting this video that night. We only had a couple days before Kathleen went home to Vancouver, and Alex to Toronto, so it was a small window of opportunity.

We spent about 20 minutes (as we usually do) wandering around buildings at UVic looking for an appropriate location for the video, and I’m pretty happy with the one we found. Some day we’ll be able to afford actual sets… someday.

It was late in the day before we even started, luckily the video was planned to be a quick shoot, so it was. Everything went smoothly, and we were done in just over two hours. And now, some pictures:

This is a fantastic photo of Kathleen. Forget the upcoming video it’s from, just check out how awesome it is!

Kathleen could totally kick my ass with those pipes.

Oh yeah, related: Try and figure out the video. You won’t.

Which way to the gun show?

Revver Offline

As of around 1:00pm today, Revver seems to have gone offline. Revver.com, their blog and forums are all unaccessible and, worst of all, all Revver video embeds seem to be broken. We don’t have any information about the cause or duration of this outage, but for the moment, a lot of our old videos are offline. Videos from the last couple of months are hosted on Blip.tv, and should still be working fine. In case this is more then a small glitch on their end, we have move up our migration schedule to move more videos over to Blip.tv in the next couple of days.

I will update this post if the situation gets resolved or if we get any new information.

UPDATE – 5:30PM PST: Revver seems to be back up now. Still don’t know what the problem was, though.

cHUSTLE 04 – Fixer: Behind-the-Scenes

As with all episode of commodoreHUSTLE, this was not a quick shoot. This was also our longest episode (if only slightly) so there was even more to do.

Kathleen had the vast majority written before episode 03 even aired, so we had a good idea of what needed to be shot first. In this case, we happened to be in Seattle anyway for the Child’s Play Charity Gala Dinner, and figured that while we were there it’d be awesome to actually show Matt in Seattle (when it was written, this wasn’t planned). We also asked Wil Wheaton to make another small guest appearance, and he was happy to oblige. Which made our day.

The rest of shooting didn’t happen until the Friday before the video actually went up. Jer, Paul, Kathleen and I got together to shoot Jer and Kathleen’s initial outdoor scene, and then after it got dark, Matt’s scene when he leaves for Seattle. We also shot Kathleen, Paul and I reading craigslist that evening.

The Friday was a full day. We started fairly early for us, shooting the “salad spinner” scene at my place. Then we moved on and shot all the scenes at Bill and Morgan’s place, them being Jer and Kathleen in the bushes, James’ half of the ending phone call, and the binoculars. Shooting the binoculars was interesting because I couldn’t get a decent angle on their bathroom window and kitchen in the same shot. So I shot them separately (there’s actually a cut in the footage when it whips back and forth that I bet you didn’t notice).

Saturday was everything else. We shot the scenes at the office at our actual office (The Moonbase), as well as a scene for a forthcoming video (forward planning), then shot Morgan’s thrusting cutaway before moving on to James’ house. There we shot his scene with Alex, and the “Coalition of James” cutaway just down the road.

Then it was over to my apartment to shoot all the group shots: the intro, the coffee and the newspaper. Last thing we shot that day was the “Why Would You Fuck with My Shit?” scene, back at Bill and Morgan’s spare room. No set dressing required.

While we had planned on finishing everything on Saturday, it didn’t end until Sunday. While editing I realized that in the “salad spinner” scene, the microphone had been turned off for the majority of filming. So while the wide shot of Paul and I was intact, Paul’s closeups, my closeups and all shots of Kathleen were audio-free. Mild panic. Realizing that all we technically need to reshoot is Kathleen, I set up the lights to approzimate the daylight as best I can, and reshoot her lines before she heads back to Vancouver. Thankfully it all turned out, but holding both the boom mic and Optimus Prime in that one shot was weird.

Last thing to shoot was Matt’s half of the final scene, which we shot at 10:30 that night, after he was done recouoperating from a long day of refereeing hockey.

I’d been working on the edit for several days, as we shot things, so it was already coming along, but I still ended up staying awake until 3:00am tweaking little things here and there. I’m thrilled with the final product and hope we can do even better in episode 05.
