DO YOU KNOW WHY I’VE BROUGHT YOU HERE? TO WATCH THIS WEEK’S VIDEO.

I came home from work today to discover that Jer had sent me a nice little write up about the genesis of this video, so rather than try to explain myself, I’ll just let him do it! (It’s Quizbomb tonight [which you should totally come to if you live in Victoria] so I’m a little pressed for time anyhow).

The idea for this video is one I had had kicking around my brain for a couple weeks before we started talking about Halloween specials. We had tried shooting “Blair Witch”-style videos before—pre-loadingreadyrun—but they always sort of devolved into a bunch of us walking around a park trying to think of what to film. My thought was that, by pairing this with Hustle, we could make it character-based, and give it some direction.

When I first mentioned this in a meeting, the idea was basically “While the crew is shooting a video, something bad happens and they are trapped in a scary situation.” From the brainstorming we did, we got that Matt was the jaded bad guy (but why?), and that there would be multiplying creepy dolls to freak Graham out. I wasn’t necessarily expecting to write this myself, but volunteered after Graham said he’d work on another forthcoming episode of Hustle.

This was hard to write, as it needed to cover a lot of bases. It needed to explain how the crew would actually become fully trapped, in a situation where they wouldn’t be able to just break a window or call for help. It also needed to explain every cut in the context of the video. That, in addition to story exposition left very little space for actual dialogue. I like fake-outs, so I wanted the video to look like a remake, before pleasantly surprising the viewer with Hustle. As is typical for Hustle, all of us display hammed-up versions our absolute worst traits, especially as called out by the forums.

To quickly answer a few questions:

The fact that the footage was found on a memory card is mostly a Blair Witch reference, but is partially an artifact from an earlier version of the script. In the original version, the entire thing was shot on iPhones, and the video ended with the camera/iPhone being dropped—in reference to previous Hustles. The original lead-in text had the footage found at a Genius Bar, on a damaged iPhone.

The basement is obviously not a Faraday cage at the beginning of the video, but becomes one later on. Presumably Matt set up some sort of antenna rig to block phone calls to-and-from the basement—something far beyond Hustle-Matt’s technical abilities. I didn’t have a stinger written for the video, but the concept I had involved Paul admitting that he had created some such a setup.

Finally, as should be obvious, the video feels like Hustle because it was written as Hustle. We decided not to name it Hustle to preserve the fake-out for folks looking at the website, and omitted the intro sequence as it seemed to break the flow. There are some other reasons, but they have to do with things you don’t know about yet. In any case, it uses the Hustle characters in a Hustle-like situation, and probably falls somewhere in Hustle continuity.

Unskippable this week is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Check it out here, if you dare.

This week’s video has pounded the pavement, and come to you to remind you to vote Andrew Shepherd this election! For more information, click here!

This week’s video sees the return of Andrew Shepherd, or rather his ever determined staff, to the campaign trail. Written by fan and evidently long time viewer (considering Mr. Shepherd and crew made their debut in Rapid-fire II) Evan Williams, this weeks video provides some insight into the trials of these two unfortunate workers.

There’s lots of visual gags in this particular video, so i advise you to maintain a keen eye as you watch.

Unskippable this week was Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War, and it can be found here.

Additionally, Graham and Paul’s Unskippable: Let’s Play of Legia 2 has been broken into bits, and made available for viewing. Part 1 of 17 can be found here. Additional parts will be made available over the coming weeks. That said, if you’re a member of the Publisher’s Club, The Escapist is offering early access to the full set as a membership bonus, and the whole collection can be found in the premium gallery here!

Cheers!

They’re back! Everyone’s favorite mercenaries Kane & Crowthorne ride again this week’s video.

I hope you don’t mind if I skip the blurb about the video this week, but we have something really cool and important to tell you about: The Daily Drop.

Starting on Thursday of this week, and continuing every single day thereafter, we’ll be posting short videos of something being dropped from ten feet filmed on a professional-grade high-speed camera. That means tons and tons of items meeting their ends in super slow-motion and glorious HD. All of the crew (and Graham especially) are huge fans of the spectacular visuals that result from the violent destruction of day to day items played back ultra-slowly, so when the chance to give this series a whirl came up we jumped at it. Most of the crew has spent the last week pulling 14 hour days to get all the content we need for this shot (we’re renting the camera, those things cost as much as a new car to buy) so we really hope you enjoy the videos as much as we do. They’re simple fun, but man are they fun.

Check out the trailer here, and remember to check the escapist on Thursday when the first item hits the floor.

Unskippable this week was “Warhammer Battle March”, a game I’d actually never heard of before today. You can watch that update here.

Cheers!

PREPARE FOR THIS WEEK’S VIDEO.

From day one, the plan had been for Paul to play the part of the bed owner in this video. Naturally, that didn’t happen. I was wicked sick with a cold on the day we shot this, and I came by Graham and Kathleen’s place for… I don’t remember. And Paul was there to play the part, but couldn’t do it because… I don’t remember. That should be reasonable evidence of how sick I was when we shot this. I felt like balls, and don’t remember most of the evening. I do, however, remember suggesting the stinger. I think that turned out well.

Spoilers- go watch the video before reading more:
The shot of Graham and I outside the burning house looks brilliant but is constructed in a way that is hilariously low-tech. We had to do that shot on a subsequent night, and we were short on people to crew. The embers are a post effect, obviously. Paul’s manning the camera, if I recall, and Kathleen is holding the boom in one hand, and swinging an incandescent light fixture back and forth randomly, in such a way that the light bounces to our faces in a random slow flicker. It looks awesome, but I’m sure to any passers by it probably would have looked like the most ridiculously unprofessional lighting system in the history of film.

Unskippable this week was Fracture. the video can be found here.

Cheers!

What variety of fruit native to Borneo and most closely related to the Breadfruit is known by the Binomial name of Artocarpus odoratissimus? This weeks video!

Apologies again for the late blog update, but I wanted to make sure that Tim’s farewell post go sufficient time at the top of the page. It’s an important announcement, so I figured the video update post could wait. Best wishes, Tim!

This particular video update features nearly every regular and recurring member of the cast and crew. Each bit was filmed in isolation, and I have to admit, when we filmed the opening part that I was in, I had very little idea what the rest of the video was going to look like. So it was a surprise to see how it all turned out. It’s always fun to film a part somewhat in isolation, and then see how it fits into a greater unknown.

Unskippable this week was Mini Ninjas I recommend you check it out.

Cheers!
