Re: Design a Card
Interesting. From a purely mechanical sense I like the theory behind it, but I don't know how much it adds over the current iteration. Part of the problem with suspend was that its complexity could very easily overwhelm a less experienced player. This only uses half of suspend, but it's still effect...

Re: The General Magic: The Gathering Thread
While this does reside in between cards like Platinum Angel and those like Lich from a mechanical standpoint, it would make sense from flavor (it's the same as other lich cards) and mechanics/color (black doesn't appear to get opponent can't win). It wouldn't surprise me to see this templating going...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
Small addition: Mana Flare fails not only on (a), but (b), (c), and (d) as well. It is a triggered ability as mentioned, but it is not the land's ability, and the production of mana is a separate instance. A side note as well. Since you are the controller of the affected object, you control the orde...

Re: Game Ideas
I'm purely amateur, and have been meaning to learn to actual do the creation part of it, but I have various spreadsheets and notebooks around, as well as a bunch of mental notes. More recently I've been contemplating ideas on how to take a pretty standard 'boring' template and add diversity through ...

I've been messing around with Wild Eight a bit. It's fun enough solo, but definitely looks like more of a coop game; anyone have it and interested in setting up a group?

Any Contraption on the battlefield that wasn't assembled, immediately goes to the scrapyard/graveyard as appropriate.

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
Zero - the ability only functions on the battlefield.
Characteristic Defining Abilities (CDAs) work in all zones, but this is not one of those. CDAs must (among other things) *set* an attribute of the card, not modify it.

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
Yes indeed (barring the ones that exile and return rather than transform) - it is the same object. So, just like a Giant Growth effect would still be applied or equipment still attached, the CE from [reanimation card] would still apply. (If it's not a creature, it will still be black, but not be a Z...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
Yes, you can do that; you must specify you are holding priority, otherwise you'll have to hope they have a response.

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
It would be easier to respond with specific cards, but I think I get what the core problem is. After a player casts a spell/activates an ability, they get priority. Since in *most* games players don't actually do anything here, the tournament shortcut is that they are passing priority. What this mea...

Re: Design a Card
Ah, yeah if we *were* listening to NWO, my gut says use common for the enablers (things that allow you to shuffle), and uncommon for your build around rewards. Another option, would be to do a limited trigger ('at the beginning of your end step, if you've shuffled this turn') - that way there's less...

Re: Design a Card
*Nod* makes sense. That said, it's a bit more complicated than your standard WotC common - they tend to like virtual vanillas or those with more limited use (triggers at a specific step, sorcery activations, etc).
I guess shuffling your library is (indirectly) a theme of the set?

Re: Design a Card
@WP&P To be clear, you are intending to use a colorless mana symbol in the cost? That means you can *only* use colorless mana, and not colored mana to pay for it.

Re: Design a Card
It's actually not that far off - I might make it's 'can't attack alone' into 'can only attack with 2+ other creatures' to make it fit.

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
Yes - it never changes zones, but is a 'new object' for things that care. (E.g., it breaks O-Ring tracking, etc.)
Note, if the card requires 'processing' multiple cards, there must be that many cards in exile; you can't choose the same card multiple times.

Re: Design a Card
A quick mechanics check on the +1; you can't have a replacement effect target. While technically you can make the +1 target, you would need to go about it in a bizarre way. Not targeting does mean it gets around hexproof/shroud. If you do want to target, I would probably make it an 'attacks and isn'...

Other possible + abilities: ⋅ +1: Return target creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield. It gains defender. Exile it at the beginning of your next upkeep. ⋅ +1: Tap target creature. Exile cards from the top of its controller's library equal to the number of tapped cre...

Re: Design a Card
Random thoughts in no particular order: ⋅ In your explanation you refer to 'outside the game' -- exile is a game zone, and thus not outside the game. (Confused me a bit when you were talking about the ult.) ⋅ Power level, the +1 doesn't seem too strong - though I'm unsure about m...

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
If you cast a creature spell, it will trigger Deeproot Waters regardless of what printed creature types it has. (If you are not casting the creature - or if it was a noncreature spell or an ability making a copy of something - it will of course not trigger.)

Re: Magic the Gathering: Ask a Judge
Sure do. Terminology clarification: there is no difference between 'cast' and 'successfully cast' - if you cast it, it's cast, end of story. The term you're looking for is _resolve_ -- which is when the spell's effects happen. (The first AotSS was cast - but never resolved. The second AotSS was both...

Re: Design a Card
@Phi On the surface, it doesn't look too problematic... but the fact that you can sacrifice lands and tokens and turn any chump blocker into a card makes me think it would be extremely powerful. As a creature it's a little boring, (not a bad thing) - it feels more like an enchantment. I feel the low...

Re: Design a Card
Paying 1 life to remove the 'nonblack' restricting makes it MUCH BETTER than Doomblade, it's not comparable. This takes a doomblade (already very good), then makes it better, then adds scale-ability, and then on top of that, adds a secondary effect you can pay for later on. Compare to a 'similar' ca...
