Your problem might be that Minecraft doesn't reserve enough RAM when starting up, it defaults to 512 MB iirc. If you edit your profile in the launcher you can add JVM arguments at the bottom.
For example
-Xmx2048M -Xms2048M
should allocate 2GB of your ram for minecraft which should be enough.
