Magnum Rewatch Ep15 - The Black Orchid

Postby Kathleen » 12 May 2015, 20:51

Magnum is hired to amuse a lady with too much money and not enough sense. Meanwhile Graham and Kathleen finally get to notch up the "that's racist!" count again.

To be fair, Magnum did make out with that guy's wife before he knew she was married.....his suspicions aren't completely unjustified. This was a weird episode, I felt like it was a seinfeld episode, where the whole thing could have been solved if everyone had just talked to each other at some point. I kept just waiting for Magnum to shake some sense into her....but it never came.

Quick Count Update:
Rating: 6.5/10 (First third: 4/10, Rest: 7/10)

Murder Count: 4 (+1)
That's Racist Count: 5.75 (+2)
Different Era Count: 4 (+0)
4th Wall Breaks: 14 (+1)

Murder Count: Magnum shoots a bad guy at the end.
Racist Count x2: Rick and TC dressed up.

Apparently the UK chose 999 deliberately because it was awkward to dial - back in the days when the numbers were sent using electric pulses down the copper wire, it was considered incredibly unlikely that you would get 27 pulses accidentally, whether it was due to someone dialling really quickly, or lightning strikes, or other random forms of interference.

I guess Americans went turned this into 911 because they copied our system but got lazy and/or realised that 11 pulses were just as unlikely, but have no idea why they didn't go further and borrow Europe's 112 instead?

During the first season of Magnum, Michael Bay was 15 years old and interning for George Lucas on Raiders. Not sure where that puts all of us on the failure scale, but it can't be good.

I have that exact same response to cringe comedy. When I was a child I would have to leave the room for a lot of children's movies because of transitive social embarrassment due to my empathy. A lot of children's media has that moment of cringe comedy for some reason.

I also find cringe situations not to be entertaining in any way whatever. In fact they are often actually painful to me, to the point where I cannot sit through an episode of cringe-heavy comedy (Klovn, The Office, etc.) in one sitting. I wonder how common this trait is.

I usually have to pause the episodes of those kind of comedies often when I watch them. The worst ones I have to pause several times to get through.

Chiming in as another person who despises cringe "comedy".
