Help!!! Car Woes

Postby Niko88 » 03 Jan 2010, 21:46

My car has become a money hole. After three engines, a transmission, a faulty heater, a broken door lock and a cracked windshield my car finally conked out when I left work yesterday. It is now a brick sitting in the Olive Garden parking lot. The advice I got was to drain all the fluets and have a monster truck drive over it.

One repair led to another repair based on the idea of "we just put money into this thing, we can't afford to scrap it" so now we have sunk a lot of cash into this shitty car and I'm looking for options

You will always lose money on cars, that is an unfortunate fact. And while it is also unfortunate that you just sunk a lot of money into it, the fact is, even if you can bring it back to life and make it run for another six months, it will just conk out again, requiring yet another round of expensive repairs. Look at the long term, if it's going to cost you 10 grand just to make it last another couple years, it would be better to just by a new car that will last you longer before requiring extensive repairs.

while this is true the problem being that I am poor and work across town. So, I can't really afford a new car, nor can I afford repairs, nor afford to miss work. Getting a loan will be difficult because I am still in college and I don't know how many banks will give a 21 year old a car loan.

which part? Body is a 92 Plymouth Acclaim, engine is a 94, transmission is a 95. 184000 miles and runs like crap. What I am thinking is trying to work with my parents to get a decent car and just getting Dori (my car) junked. I would like to find a way to scrap any useful parts to get the most from it.

The next best thing IMO would be to check out some used car lots that have vehicles that are semi-new, as in some time after 2002 or even more recent. Or you could get lucky and grab any old car that runs fine.

That, or learn some bus routes.

Ooo! Green Bay to Victoria, that shouldn't take to long. Though it would be a fun trip.

I am hoping to get it towed to my mechanic today if we can't get it started again. If it requires anything more that $200 I am going to need to borrow a sledge hammer

Remove any good/reusable parts. Get it moved to a high traffic corner, and acquire a large sledge hammer and a couple of baseball bats. Make sign saying "$5 per swing". People will pay you to beat up your beater. Also, you can let them graffiti it for $x/can of spraypaint.

Have seen this used as a fund-raising bit on campus once. Fun to watch...

Could you do 2stepz suggestion, and put the car somewhere near me? Let's just say I have issues to work out, issues that could be very profitable to you....

Cars are money holes. Strip the useful parts and sell what's left as scrap. Or, donate to charity and get a tax receipt.

Or you could patch it up with metal and weapons and spikes Mad Max style.

I was thinking like $2 per swing and 6 swings for $10 after I take out the Transmission, Stereo (which was a present two years ago so it is still pretty nice), the muffler, and anything else that can still be made a profit on.

WAIT!!! I will call the Mythbusters! I will let them blow it up. Hell, I would do that for free

I don't know if this was at York U's campus, but I've seen that here (York U) also. I fully endorse this idea.

my local bus place, I think they're called Centro, offers students a $150 pass for the semester and it costs $25 to renew. If you use it just 5 times a week then you're already breaking even but you get the added convenience of not having to carry change and shit around, and if you use it for two semesters then you're saving about $125.

It's definitely cheaper than a car but it can be inconvenient to work your schedule around, and it can be a pain in the ass during the winter.

haha there was this old lady sitting across from me on the bus and she had all these shopping bags and when I came on she grabbed them kind of tightly like I'm gonna grab her box of raisins and run out the fucking door as soon as the opportunity comes around

if your bus goes by walmart literally 80% of the people will get off there, it's like watching the migration of the bar-tailed godwit

Well, we at my college got it worked out that students use the city busses for free. The fact of the mater is that I needed a car in order to see my girl friend who lives in another city and my family who are dispersed across the state as I moved here from a solid three hours away.

At the University of Victoria you are forced to buy a bus pass as part of your fees. The four month pass costs about the same as a regular one month pass making it a very good deal.
